You can notice it before it starts, and break it by just moving or changing your sleeping position.

not Sure the mechanism that causes sleep paralysis, but i had some few sleep paralysis, and i think when it happens what helps is to stay calm and become focused.

For instance, when it happened to me, i learnt to move my toes, and then gradually the rest of my body regained movements.

To calm myself, i say Jesus, since i believed, calling on Jesus name helps. And it helped me too.

Now I don't experience such, i don't believe any witch has power over my Life, and i don't look for their trouble either.

I really Think when you believe in Spiritual things a lot of the time, you will be affected by them, because our brain and mind is very active and creative and will produce what you believe.

There was a time i was vulnerable to such things, and i think at that time, i believed in such things, but i have outgrown such, and i no longer experience them. I noticed what ever i dwell on, is what my brain will produce and simulate on.

While in my university days I experienced a very strange one. Though I am very used to sleep paralysis as I experienced it regularly when I was younger. This time I was wide awake and fully conscious of my environment just that I could not move any part of my body. I felt a hand squeezing my balls with such intensity that it made me struggle to shout but I couldn't . In my mind I wondered if it was one of my room mates trying me with an expensive horseplay. After a few seconds I came to. The turmoil I had experienced during the sleep paralysis had given way to complete quiet and still in my room. It was 4am and two of my room mates were reading their books quietly and completely oblivious of what I experienced. I still felt the pain in my groins all through the day. There is something about sleep paralysis that cannot be explained just by intellectual reasoning alone.

I always have sleep paralysis whenever I sleep on my back with my face facing up(and I do that always). I think the paralysis may be because I was putting pressure on the part of the brain(medula oblongata) that control muscle movement. I sometimes get hallucinations when that happens.
A TRUE STORY:
I once saw a thief stole my phone while I 'slept'. My eyes were not fully closed that day and I was sleeping face-up. This idiot peeked in and saw I was sleeping, so he came in, took some stuff from the table and the phone beside me and left! I saw all these but couldn't move. I still slept off after that. Woke up later and forgot about it. It was when I reached out to get my phone that I remembered. I described the guy to neighbours and those who recognized him and knew where he stay took us to his place. We no beat am. We just turned the room upside down and took back every thing he stole. Sleep paralysis happens when the part of your brain in charge of consciousness wakes up or sleeps before the part that’s in charge of movement. Sleep paralysis episodes are always characterized by hallucinations; this explains your weird experience. There’s nothing spiritual about it as far as I know.
