Ask yourself is it only lagos that has access to the sea? Why are there no other major sea ports in the south?

Find out about the UK and ask yourself if all the sea port are in London and all the Goverment minitries are in London?

Olodo,

Rivers has two major seaports in Onne and Port Harcourt with rail connection to the East, Middle Belt and the North

There are seaports in Warri with rail line connection, a Port in Calabar and planned ports in Akwa Ibom and Ondo.

It requires both federal and state government efforts to make a port viable and productive. A state government can build a seaport as they are already doing in Lekki using state and private funds.

The question you should ask is why did Cross River state waste billions of dollars on Tinapa and a conference centre that could have been invested in electricity or a deep seaport costing $600-800 million.

Akwa Ibom wasted millions of dollars on a stadium and golf course at the expense of building a seaport. Yet Lagos despite all its challenges is building metrolines and deepsea ports using loans, investment and state tax.

I laugh when i hear Lagos needs a special status. Its not too good and i can bet it would bring lots of injustice and "JUST"agitations

Lagos needs a special status: You forced everyone to import goods into the country from Lagos and you say role it plays in the nation

You force everyone to travel out of the country from Lagos and none in the Eastern region

You forced Oil multinational companies to have their HQs in Lagos while their operations are in Eastern Region - SS&SE

You share proceed (mainly from Akwa ibom, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa Edo, Imo) to other parts of the country including Lagos and you said Lagos needs a special status.

You deprive people from the Eastern region from having an Embassy in their region and force them to fly to Lagos and you said it deserve a special status

My take:
If Lagos needs a special status, then Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, etc should be given same status as they lay the golden eggs for the country

Instead of govnors to talk about how to scrap the 1999 constitution and push for regions to manage their resources they are talking about special status

Lagos holds more than 80% of our critical economic assets, there should be a special force for Lagos, and special security and social funding, because of the burden it carries of other people's of other states rushing into it.

Instead of seeking a mere special status, why not agitate for resource control, which will be approved across board.
Let all states control their resources and pay tax to the federal government.
They know they produce nothing , so they will never ask for that.
Lagos is what it is today because of the Injustice in Nigeria. The fg has been favouring Lagos to the detriment of other states n region. If resource control is allowed every one will move to their various states n Lagos will become a ghost town....

I hear so much about this Oil multinationals having headquarters in Lagos

What is the relevance of this?

Who forced them to be in Lagos? When and how?

A special Economic Zone should be carved out of Lagos with a status such as Hong Kong.

It shall be self governing but under the sovereignty of Nigeria.

It will have its own financial regulator independent of the CBN.

Capital flows in and out of this region shall be unimpeded.

Relaxed immigration rules for foreigners from developed countries and African diaspora.

Transactions will be denominated in USD and all corporation taxes shall be remitted to the Federal Government of Nigeria to be shared by all tiers of government.

This territory shall be run as a private corporation and occupants will pay dues, taxes, fees and fines to the corporation for the upkeep of facilities within this territory.

If this can happen, it will unleash the tremendous energies from Nigeria and the diaspora without the ‘political mill stone’ hanging on her neck. As long as this territory remits money to the Federal government.

YOU ARE ON POINT !

You have said it all.

But I want to add the issue of traffic gridlock in the Apapa Port Area.

Lagos is in a position to push some of those ships to go to the eastern ports e.g Warri, Sapele, Onne and Calabar port.

There by reducing the traffic on the street of Lagos.

But they are greedily keeping those ships in Lagos and they are now asking for special status.

There will be no indigenes in this territory which will not be the whole of Lagos state.

When Abuja was conceived the original inhabitants were supposed to be resettled outside the FCT. But that didn’t happen hence we have ‘Abuja indigenes’ citizens of the Federal Government in Abuja and therefore superior to other Nigerians.

And the current indigenes will have no say in this project?

You just sit down with your laptop and decide what to do with their ancestral lands?

But other Nigerians will retain indigeneship elsewhere? Whilst those from Lagos become homeless?

No man can be resettled outside his ancestral land even if they sold land to the federal government.

The indigene still want to hold on to their ancestral land in Abuja.
Re: Sanwo-Olu Restate Calls For Special Status For Lagos by omonnakoda: 10:59am On Jun 02, 2021
The traffic gridlock in Apapa does not exist for the reasons you claim

There are landlocked countries like Switzerland that import and export more than we do without the congestion problems.

There is nothing wrong with moving ships to other places to spread development but it has nothing to do with congestion

The infrastructure used to evacuate Apapa is more than 40 years old and has not been upgraded also there are too many cars on the road and no train/Metro mass transit infrastructure in Lagos

Unfortunately any time Lagos is mentioned too many bitter and hateful Eboes come around to start venting their bile.

Billions are being made from the Port and Customs and some of that money should go into upgrading the port infrastructure

Also if the government operates effectively a dry port system linked to rail. Then containers do not need to be checked in Lagos

It depends on the terms. If they agree to it and receive compensation it is not a big deal.As long as there is a treaty or other legal backing.
We have seen so many instances of this in history even recently with Bakassi
