Please NO CHIlD should not be obliged to contribute anything towards to running of the home especially if they are not working.
If they are working, they should also not be obliged. They need all the money they can save to start their future asap. They shouldn’t be obliged.

However, I’ll advice kids to use their good mind and buy stuffs around the house from time to time. But it should never be made compulsory.

I don’t live in the same city with my parents because of work but whenever I am home, I do not pay kobo for anything. If I even want to pay, my father will tell me to save my money that I will need it later. So what I just do is when I go out with my parent, I pay for what they want to buy or when they send me message, I don’t ask them for the money. Kids should never be obliged to pay for anything around the house.
When next you see your dad, tell him an online fellow said he is the daddy of the year.

Respect to that man! cool

Children shouldn't be a burden to parents. Ever! This is exactly why family planning is being advocated.

I get your point tho. A working child should be able to contribute one or two things at home. But it shouldn't be compulsory.

The fundamental duties of any parent is to take care of the children needs. The role should never be reversed.
What is the definition of a child? A child old enough to work but still living with his/ her parents or a child that’s still in school and looking up to his/ her parents for stipends.
Go check it out...... even in all these developed countries, a 16 year old can still get a part time job somewhere. My only fear is that when you are saddled with responsibilities as a child, it’s very difficult to reach the peak if care is not taking.
For the ones saying they still in school and sending their parents money, I am afraid you are have become a ‘ child breadwinner’ if there is any word like that. Yes as kids, we should learn to give to our parents if there are occasions, like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays and likes but not contributing to the well-being of a home. I have witnessed several situations where young adults contribute to the well-being of the house and they tend to be larger than life to their supposed parents.
For me oooo, I won’t encourage my kids/ wards to contribute to the well-being of my house because of the following reasons:
(1) they can’t come in and go out without communication and prior approval from me.
(2) I don’t want my kids to stamp their ground and tell me that they do contribute, therefore, they can do whatever they like.
(3) I want my kids to be responsible for their success and failures. If they are saddled with responsibilities early enough, they can later give executes for their mistakes in life. ( typical examples are the yahoo yahoo boys and oloshos)
(4) I have always prayed that my kids should stand tall in all their endeavors. That said, it is the responsibility of parents if within their power to support, provide and train their kids so as to avail them of good opportunities, compete with their mates and turn out to be responsible adults.

Even in advance countries Joshua might be referring to, their support system is outstanding. They have child benefits, food assistance, housing assistance and all sorts.

I hope my explanation helps.

God bless.

Did they ask to be brought into this world or what's this? Infact from the age 10 a kid should insist on re-negotiating his or her existence in the home and ask for a greater share of the parent's income for being brought into the world without his prior agreement cheesy

I'm a Student and I also work. I usually pay cable TV bills, some other bills for the general running of the house, and help my siblings out too. It helps in removing some kind of "burden" from Parents cos they're really trying.
When I started working, Omo! I knew that Parents have a lot of responsibilities, I even hailed my parents too.
Sometimes when I have enough money, I usually buy them gifts, or when I'm broke, I tell them to manage recharge cards.
Lol, I remember my Mum praying for me on phone cos of ordinary recharge card.
Thank you. I just recharged my mom grin
I will be doing that occasionally now.

Yes, those kids can easily misbehave. Yes I know of a 20 year old boy assisting his father with bills and seriously misbehaving. The dad is a single dad with 8 children. He has 3 jobs but finds it difficult to make ends meets.
The 20 year old boy graduated from high school, started working ( 2 jobs) and assisting his father with some bills but disrespects his dad at the slightest provocation.
Never, I mean never will be child contribute to the well-being of the house when I am still alive.
Come to think of it, what are the responsibilities of the supposed parents?
Once my children are old enough to work, they will definitely go look for apartments and be responsible.
There is a caveat though. If I live in Lagos and my kids are grown up, still single and working in the same city before they stand on their feet, yes, they can support me at will. That’s different from when are saddled with my responsibilities when I am not bed ridden.

- Sending mom something.

How? You send her from the one she sends to you or from the one someone else sends?

You might need to cut soap for your fellow Nigerian students.

Hi there! I agree with you that the role should never be reversed.
However, my parents NEVER coerced me to pay bills or do anything, it was out of my own volition, there was no pressure whatsoever from both parents. My parents are comfortable (with or without the children), I do these things just to add support and appreciate their efforts.

You people should stop this rubbish!

I have female friends, colleagues at work, coursemates from school dashing me money.
Recently, my female Boss dashed me money, and my Father was marvelled at her generosity, that he bought her bush meat to thank her for treating me like her own child.

Maybe you should change the circle of female friends you hangout with.
