HELLO NLers.

Please, I want to know if its necessary to have a degree or just working experience to be an HMO Officer.
Currently I work in a hospital that doesn't deal with HMO and as it stands, pressure is coming in as patients that patronise our facility uses one health insurance scheme or the other.

I happened to be the person they call manager with small pay, but I am learner daily on the Job.
I handle most of those jobs related to HMO.

Currently, I need to claim funds from the Police NHIS which I have gone to the Zonal office in Lagos. I have been given all the necessary details and how to go about it.

All I need is , guide or template to write to the Police NHIS for formal relationship with them as well as others.

Please if anyone has any guide, assist me.

So, if I learn on the job, will I be an HMO Officer or I need an extra course or training for it?

I know I can do well as I have learned lots of skills wrt that recently.
I am an Engrr.graduate.

Your clinic needs to partner with an HMO company eg. AXAmansard.
Then any patient under that insurance plan will pay your clinic via the insurance company

Having a degree qualification is an additional advantage but not necessary having it before you become (HMO) health maintenance officer.

Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) liaison Officer is actually the meaning.

You do not need a degree to do this, even an OND graduate of any discipline can do this unless you want to be a professional health insurance manager. There is a professional body for that.

All you need is to learn the simple procedures in handling NHIS cases. Just get the NHIS guidelines, read and assimilate the contents. You must be a good communicator also because you will be face with diverse cases day in, day out.

Learn more on how to use email for communication. Those HMO companies you will be dealing with have different orientations and approach to issues, so be ready to be having bad day sometimes, and bad debts to cope with. They can owe your facility more than 5 million and not willing to pay you in the next 10 months. You will have to be patient and tolerate them by writing several letters, calling, messaging and sometimes result to threats to blacklist them and expose their indebtedness to their enrollees and NHIS which is their regulatory body.

I have been there. It's not a job for every dick and harry.

Thanks alot, I appreciate. Am getting to know the job work and understand it.
All I need is proposal to write to some of the HMOs in Nigeria as the hospital I work doesn't use any.
That's the reason I am asking.
If you can assist with probably a letter pattern or proposal pattern, I will be glad.
Kindly request for my mail and I will drop it.
Thanks.

An HND or Bsc can get you a good position in an HMO.

with your background in handling NHIS issues at the hospital you will do well as Relationship Manager in a good HMO in Nigeria.

well be ready to handle issues and be yelled at by irate patients and clients.

Its also a good paying job.

Also if you are good at selling, you can make good fortune working for an HMO as a sales person.

Hygeia HMO is one of the best around in Nigeria.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)/Hospital Administrator.

If you already have a degree in Engr, then there is no reason why you should acquire another degree in the field of HMO, which is basically health insurance and qualitative data analysis. I will suggest that you look for an online course and master degree online

In Nigeria, health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are the purchasers of health insurance with a social National Health Insurance Scheme for civil servants. However the roles of HMOs in implementation of social health insurance are not clear. This study determined the roles of HMOs in implementation of the national social health insurance scheme in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) purchase care on behalf of the National Health Insurance of USA [2]. Nigeria adapted the HMO system in 1999. With the formation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) [1], private entities were encouraged to form HMOs [3]. The Act establishing the NHIS allowed HMOs to serve as agents to the NHIS and should cover both public and organized private sectors.

HMOs in the Formal Sector Health Insurance Program (FSSHIP) of Nigeria’s NHIS were appointed to give the scheme a private sector face-lift. The founding fathers of the scheme believed that the social system of the country is marred with inadequacies, without checks and balances. Based on that, policy makers in health suggested a system of health insurance with HMOs participating as agents of the NHIS to purchase health services from public and private providers. HMOs are private sector driven and are expected to close leakages that might be arising from poor management by the public sector

The one that annoys me is the 750 naira capitation they pay per patient and if you dare do any procedure without a PA code, you are on your own.

Hygeia, Anchor and mansard aren't doing badly.

These are some of the same reasons why some doctors move away from accepting HMOs. HMO systems are known to pay poorly for everything from clinic visits to routine medical tests, and many physicians say HMO payments don't even cover their overhead costs. The HMO preapproval process is a challenge, too.

It is the same. Call it HMO Desk Officer, Hospital HMO Officer, or HMO liaison Officer, the nature of the job remain the same.

By the way, some hospitals enjoy dealing with the HMOs strictly on their Private Health Insurance Schemes and not with NHIS because they have less NHIS enrollees on their quarterly list or because NHIS is still operating with 2015 tariff plan which cannot meet the current economic reality of today, 2021. Imagine, using the 2015 price of a drug at a dispensary rate of 40 naira in 2021. Is that not crazy.

NHIS is yet to update the price despite the high rate of inflation in the country. So how do you expect some hospitals to maintain the NHIS desk if they are not earning much from the scheme?

This will do.
Fetch email contacts of popular HMOs like hygeia, reliance, alliance, sterling health, roding...preferably email contacts of the Lagos office(s) then send a mail indicating your hospital's interest in partnering with them they will then send representatives to check your facility. Once they are convinced of the standard, they will give yhu a template with cost prices of drugs and procedures...yhu will then negotiate and reach a compromise thus an agreement. Afterward, yhu will get a list of their enrollees and start attending to them when needed. Yhu will make bills with the agreed prices and forward it to them with a pre-authorization code that yhu must get by calling their contact number or email before attending to an intending enrollee...some pays fast while others can delay but that's naija for yhu...
As soon as yhu have about three onboard, more will indicate interest in partnering with yhu don't worry.
Please note their prices are low compared to regular hospital prices and their patients are called enrollees....

An HMO or a HMO officer?
Re: Do I Need A Degree To Become An HMO Officer? by presco27: 11:01pm On Jun 21, 2021
HMO stands for Health Management Organizations in Nigeria. These organizations are charged with the responsibility of managing the provision of standard health care services via a network of hospitals under the plan. They serve as a middleman between the hospital and clients seeking healthcare services.
Re: Do I Need A Degree To Become An HMO Officer? by presco27: 11:02pm On Jun 21, 2021
The users of HMO are companies with at least five employees. The Health Management Organization offers its services to companies seeking to provide healthcare services for its employees as well as their families. The arrangement works in the following way

The HMO company has a list of Healthcare service provider that can serve its clients (companies).
The HMO offers its services to companies seeking to provide healthcare for its employees. The services are offered under different product plans.
An agreement is made depending on the type(s) of HMO plan the company’s employees opt for including the premium attached to it.
The company agrees to pay the premium, which will cover the employees of the company based on their choice of products. Their choice of products is subject to the conditions of that plan for a stipulated time which is usually a year.
The employee selects a hospital from the list of healthcare service providers of HMOs like Hygeia HMO, Avon HMO, and so on.
When an employee or any person eligible under the HMO scheme falls ill, the hospital is liable to attend to the patient if that was the choice of the healthcare provider as well as other considerations.
The hospitals are often paid upfront regardless of whether the patient uses it or not.

Yes. Thanks. I have received 5 enrollees already today from one of them via their mail, just got accepted by the HMO. The job is the challenge. We do not have a system that will check the price of each medication, now that we have HMO partners with us, we need to step up that. This means we need to look carefully before attending to patients or enrollees from them.
Please if you don't mind, help me with your contact so I can call you for more info.
Thanks.
