The management of the University of Calabar has threatened to publish the names of its graduates that have refused to collect their certificates years after graduation.

This was made known by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Gabriel Egbe in a memo obtained by GRASSROOT REPORTERS.

The university said it is shocked over the development, revealing that over 42,000 certificates are yet to claimed, some dating back to the 1980s.

The memo titled "Unclaimed Certificates" read:

"It has been discovered that there are over forty two thousand(42,000) unclaimed certificates of the University of Calabar in Faculties and Institutes. Some of these certificates dates back to the 1980s. The University Management is shocked by this abnormality, and therefore, directs that all who have not collected their Certificates after several years of graduation should do so immediately.

"Persons who are acquainted with these group of graduands, should please inform them to come for collection. Those who do not so before the end of three months from the date of this notice, will have their names published and will be surcharged subsequently". The memo read.

What’s the difference between the certificate and a sheet of A4 paper

Those candidates have moved on with life, let them post the names
They are even giving them the proof that they actually attended the school, which is supposed to be the job of the certificate itself

That defeats their argument and goals all together

Sometimes, the universities are the reason why most graduates refuse to collect their certificates and concentrate more on things better and more profitable than the certificate.



I remember when I went to collect mine at the exams and records office, I was asked to pay N35k just to collect it. On a normal day, I would have ask the lady attending to me to use the certificate to fan herself from the excessive heat coming out from her body, but I just had to succumb to that day light robbery because it was needed at the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.(Abuja)

Black man and wickedness. Ordinary A4 paper them go dee call money. Make una keep mine I'm not interested yet. Make I hustle for money first. It has no use in this country

I'm sure those graduates woke up to reality and realized that the certificate is of no use in this country.

Before now to get your certificate from UNICAL is like climbing mount. Everest; difficult and time consuming! Just as them clearing students for NYSC was as hard as finding diamonds. They're trying to change but they still haven't changed on the issue of transcript. After frustrating majority of those people from collecting their certificates due to the stress involved and they abandoned it for them, they're now begging them to come and collect them. Post it, lets check whether our Fathers, Mother's and Uncles and Auntys certificates are there so we can tell them.

Sometimes you stay up to 3 days in some schools trying to get your own certificate.

Lol, why should they come and pay again to collect a certificate that the Statement of Result hasn't benefited them in anyway, other than tag of being a graduate.

d funny part was wen he said even people dt left school during the 80's n 90's when d fee was free n even below 10k then are still asked to pay same amount with fresh graduates..
Nigeria education sector keeps dwindling n d major factor is because in oda sanner climes, skuls are mainly development centers but its only in Nigeria that SCHOOLS ARE MAINLY REVENUE ALLOCATION CENTERS...

Who needs the a4 paper

It's gradually losing its relevance in Nigeria
Gone are the days a degree guaranteed a good life.
People just go to school for hope these days.

Nigeria should invest more in technical education and startup hubs and cities like shenzen and silicon valley

To avoid issues like this, schools should make certs of students readily avalaiable upon graduation.

Many are making use of their statement of result, hence it becomes very difficult for students to go pick up their cert in their sch.

Not just unical, it's popular among Nigerian universities. The problem is that they ask for money before issuing the certificates that's why most people ignore it. You don't really need your certificates in the labor market or scholarship/masters applications .. your statement of result and transcript are more than enough

Una never see anything yet. What do many of those graduates want to use the certificate for in this present naija?

An easier process can be used to issue students certificates without fee.
After paying school fees for years, you still charge for the result(certificate) that has been laboured and paid for.
I feel once you are cleared of not owing University fees, the certificate should be issued for free.

This does not apply only to Universities, some people also abandon their WAEC/NECO certificates.
Some secondary schools charge for all sort of things for WAEC certificate, and different fees for NECO, same students, same school, same year.

Buhari already said even if you graduate with a good degree from a good school, there is no job for you.

They should collect their certificate who knows if they can still get employment with it

It is the hassle and hostile days spent to collect the certificate that is discouraging student to come

So that they ll give them final exploitation ABI.

You ll go and collect paper that may be useless.
