Well, I have no stories to share.

But I'll say lack of information is what pushed many into the suffering they are passing through overseas.

Some are tricked my pictures they find online.

Some are tricked by a common lie that things are so easy abroad and you would be handed a dream job on your arrival.

Some think accommodation is easy to get and you would have made enough salary to pay house rent.
But they don't even realize that in some places rent is monthly and you pay light and water bills.
Nothing is free over unlike in Nigeria where you can get water for free

Many people even believe that in the overseas, graduating from a university means automatic jobs

it's just a general culture. And there's a lot of land here in the north so farming is always a good alternative. You can make 1.2m naira from dry season rice farming and be eating the money small small through out the year. Or put it in another business like storing sesame, wheat or beans. The desperation to go out and survive has not yet hit the north badly. Its people who don't have capital to buy fertilizer, fuel for pumping water, and grains that do menial jobs. But in rainy season, they farm.

A sane advice is for anyone with a good job in Nigeria considering moving abroad to first visit the country of his choice first, observe life overseas and finally return after comparing both climes.
I know a set of people will throw tantrums upon reading what I said above. To them the only thing stopping them from success is a visa and a ticket - upon stepping on any country in Europe or America, they are automatically billionaires like Dangote. Lack of research has really hurt many making such life-changing decisions.

Roughly 20 years ago when I visited the US embassy in Lagos, I observed a man sitting on a wheelchair, holding a sign saying stuff totally against the US government, right in front of the embassy. I was touched and wanted to know what his problem was. Anyone going to that embassy around then would remember him - he was crippled, not begging, rather having a one-man protest with his visible signs strapped all over his wheelchair.
After I got done with my business in the embassy, I came out and saw him on same wheelchair with same sign and asked him what his problem was. He told me a lot about his life in the US the decades he spent here and how he ended up on the wheelchair.
But his main advise relevant to this topic is what I said in the first paragraph, which is still relevant today - don't make irrational decisions, do your proper research.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. Everyone's success or failures overseas depend largely on those you are surrounded by in whatever clime you find yourself in.
If you are surrounded by Nigerian professionals willing to show you the ropes, you might just be able to secure a professional job like them and start your life.

On the flip side, if you're surrounded by the Nigerian gangs into drugs, gangbanging, hardcore nightlife, you are bound to be like them as well.

Many in the latter category tend to forget what brought them overseas in the first place, and disregard the most important thing they need - establishing their legal status in the country they're in. The worst story I've heard is when someone allowed his stay to expire and said he forgot to do what he needed to do to renew it. He said he was too deep into partying and clubbing and forgot. If you know why you came somewhere, keep track of how to stay there legally.

On a realer note, one big advise would be don't sell your house if you own one in Nigeria to go overseas when you don't know what to expect there.
Many of those you will meet in these countries are unwilling to return to Nigeria because of the constant bad news about Nigeria, and mainly because they have no where to stay when they get back home.
If some had a place to stay, they'd gladly return home. So, why sell a home you already own when many people in the country you're heading to are still struggling with owning one home in Nigeria?
They can always face the bad news like everyone else in Nigeria that lives with it. Not return to Nigeria to become homeless.

Don't resign from a good job you already have in Nigeria. Visit the place first and see things for yourself. You'd be surprised from that experience alone, but it's worth it.

I've heard of stories of people planning to relocate to foreign countries and end up getting abandoned by the friends and family members they relied on, right there at the airport. So, how do you expect to know the system anywhere when you don't know anyone to show you the ropes?

Like someone said in the earlier posts, information is key. Lack of information is what makes a lot of Nigerians make hasty decisions.

I hear this alot. The secret is "how can you get a good job in Canada without a Canadian education?".

Canada values her education highly. Even if it's a 3 month course, do it before hunting good jobs

That is the mistake most immigrants always make. They don't make research on the country they are emigrating to only to find out that things are different over there. Just like you said, getting an education from the country you want to settle in to no matter how small is very vital. It can even be done online from Nigeria before traveling especially in this covid pandemic.

I met a waiter at rhapsody in ikeja shopping mall, who regretted leaving Nigeria for dubai, i asked him why? He said he left his stable job to Dubai, got to dubai and was earning 70k, was also living in a shared accommodation with 4 people, after working for 5 months, he resigned and left Dubai for Nigeria.

2nd story

My cousin left his well paid job for Canada, sold his properties in naija and moved to Canada with his family, first 8 month of his life was hell upon earth, from bills to bills, from one low wage job to another, the neighborhood he was living with his family was infested with gangs, the public school was also infected with gangs, his children got bullied because of their accents, his wife, even though supportive couldn't get a good job, bros was tired of everything.

So he decided to solve his problem by moving back, after the scrap they could save in Canada, my guy and his family moved back to Nigeria, they had to start afresh, thank God, he had a supportive family and friends, they use their connections to help him find another good job but what is lost is lost till today he still regrets selling his properties for Canada.

Your cousin did not get the right information and probably had too much expectation that is not within a reasonable time frame. Firstly, I suspected he went to live in Scarborough or North York in Toronto, he should have simply gone to live somewhere else or relocate to another city. The problem is that people want to retain the excess lifestyle they had in Nigeria abroad which abroad is not really designed for except you know investments that you can do which can make you that kind of money, and they are available. I think your cousin left too much in a hurry

That write up is not vague in my opinion. Its a question you can't just say its good or bad. People have different experiences. Abroad was splendid for Mr. A when he left Nigeria does not mean it will be same for Mr. B. All he was alluding to is the process and circumstances will usually justify the result a person turn out with.

Like he said, when you travel out and the support system is not genuine, their is everything tendency for you to mix with the bad eggs which in turn will lead to bad experience. For someone that has good people who are supporting at every step will most likely succeed and eventually have good experience

Wow, that will be excessive. A single person has no business living in a CAD1800 -2500 home except they plan to share (That's the cost of a 3-4 bedroom family home ).
They can go for bachelors CAD1000 or one bedroom $1200-$1300. They can also share a three bedroom family home costing $1800 into 3 and pay CAD600 monthly
Avoid homes where you pay for heating because heating is expensive. Why is the tenant paying for water bill in an apartment
Groceries for a single person should not be more than $250 except they like frozen meals and eating out. Food isn't expensive in Canada. And if she every goes above budget and there isn't food, she can locate the closest community Centre food bank, Salvation army, Fire of God church or Shepherds of good hope mission.
Reduce Electricity Bills by cooking during OFF-PEAK hours after 7pm. If she is finding it difficult to pay electricity bill contact OESP or any Provincial authority that can assist with Electricity bills
No point buying a brand new car and paying on credit, Buy a used car and pay cash
This advice is for those trying to settle into Canada, unemployed or at minimum wage.

Cars are not cheap in the abroad too,what people with low income can buy are usually "next to scrap"
What are regarded as car's abroad are something in the range of $7000 and above or equivalent in other currencies,those are car's
that still comes under some sort of warranty except you wan buy auction car's


Most people can't even afford to pay that $7k in cash,they still go for some sort of financing.

Why do you think you want to relocate?
You have to check reasons?
Check your options? Family or personal reason?

For example, my brother’s friend family relocated to USA for few reasons
1. Security
2. Job security
3. Future of their kids
4. Health care

If you can afford all this in Nigeria then it’s up to you

Truth be told. There is No where like home. There will always be more freedom at home. However the main ingredients to being human are not readily available in Nigeria.

No light, security, affordable housing health care, you name it. Even basic opportunity.

I left Nigeria after my you service many years Ago. I lived in Europe, and North America. Withness great difference in quality of life

Every one has a reason for leaving. I will never judge. However I feel if you think you are highly gifted in business, music or other hussle. Nigeria is the place.

But professional minded guys can try there luck outside. I was very unhappy in North America. My family thought I was mad for return. It took me about 5 to 6 years of destitution to rebound and being financially okay. I'm doing very fine now. I'm really really greatfull to God that I did return even after trying to.

I can afford to take my family on a trip abroad once a year and I employ over 20 people that work for me. Maybe I'm wrong. But I don't think I could have done it like that abroad.

The 20 richest Nigerians are based in Nigeria.
The 20 biggest artist are based here.
Even the doctors are working for people over there. While the rich doctors in Nigeria work for themselves.

My only and major issue honestly is insecurity.

God will make each and everyone find his calling and prosperous.

But remember, MORE PROBLEMS MEANS MORE OPPORTUNITIES!

I don't know if most people commenting here are doing so out of experience or just saying.

As for me, I do not regret it one bit. The menial job was just for a while before getting my feet up and then I got a job that matched my qualifications.


Yes, there's loads of bills to pay and you may not have enough left when all this is sorted, but you have a good quality of life, enjoy what you pay for - constant light, water, good roads and transportation links, good health care and numerous other benefits that cannot be qualified monetarily.

You do not compare sleep and death. I repeat, I do not regret leaving the lucrative job I was doing to relocate. Best decision I ever made

Don’t mind our people. A lot of them traveling don’t have transferable skills by way of experience from good (well structured) companies eg multinationals. They do not have foreign qualifications and they want to hit the ground running. It is because most of them are not ready for a rebirth that’s why they think abroad is not good. Abroad is 1m% better than sh!ttuhole Nigeria. Get your information correctly before you leave and pray for God’s directions. You won’t regret it. If you come home, na to just come visit and enjoy home flavors you could have missed.

The only northern friend I have here is a doctor. The rest immediately go home after studies because they have a well paid job back home and the prospects are better for an average northerner back home. In any case virtually all of them come to U.K. on government scholarship. Most southerners come to U.K. on their own. Most northers do not do any part time job while in school because they are well taken care of financially.

From your explanation, i don't think canada is for me.

I can't live in a shared apartment, or beg some organization for food or wait till 7pm to cook.

I can't be at the mercy of other people for my survival.
