Stormtrooper11: I don't think we as a country are gonna get rich and become like Dubai once more of us start paying tax. It's not that simple. First, consider the fact that there are businesses in states like Lagos that pay from 30-50 different legal and illegal taxes every year to the federal, state, and local government, plus to agberos, Mami water, and what have you. I would say most businesses are already overtaxed as it is. Plus the the tax collected from businesses and people too either disappear into private pockets or are embezzled by those in power. All the tax money that has been collected from us all compare what has been done with it to what could have been done with it. Out there in markets, people making maybe 500 naira to 1k gross profit daily get mercilessly taxed. I'm talking about women with small basins of soap or okro who sit by the roadside and pay multiple taxes daily to touts and the local government just for the privilege of selling in the market. Seeing this kind of thing always makes me furious. Taxing the most poor and vulnerable among us is pure madness. Second, businesses these days provide their own electricity, water, security and general amenities. They essentially do the work the government is supposed to be doing with the tax money it collects and at the end get taxed with nothing to show for it. That's total madness and cannot ever make sense to me. Part of the reason prices are so high in naija is the number of legal and illegal taxes out there that businesses are made to pay, which get factored into the price of what they are selling. Enter Keke for example and see how much the drivers pay in tax to the police, local government, touts, and everyone but Santa Claus. So, saying we only need to pay more tax to become an advanced society makes zero sense to me. What's needed is total reform of everything in this country. And that includes our brains, cos sometimes I'm not sure we are in our right senses, no offense meant. Edit: It's okay not to agree or be insulted by the last sentence. I apologise. But just spend a day in a place like Lagos and I'm sure you will understand what I mean. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

It is 19:35 here in South Africa, and the police have until midnight to arrest Jacob Zuma so he can be jailed to serve his 15 month sentence for contempt of court. With a crowd of supporters - some armed - outside his estate vowing to violently resist, it is going to be a long few hours. Fortunately, the police aren't taking chances. GabrielYulaw: Nigerians don't need to pay more taxes in my opinion, what the FIRS and other revenue collecting agencies need to do is broaden the tax net. Nigeria has a tax to GPD ratio of 6.3%, which's a travesty for a country our size. look at our peers for instance say S.africa which stands at 30%, Ghana at 14% etc Nigeria has a revenue problem, not a debt problem. If we can get even 20% as tax to GPD, it would greatly improve capital spend without the risk of expanding our debt and debt servicing obligations. The State constitutes a big chunk of capital spending, but over the years recurrent expenditure has trumped capital expenditure due to low revenue collection and quite frankly stupidity, with the infrastructural deficit we have, we should not be spending ₦1trn every year paying subsidies that are only for PMS alone, the figures for electricity is outrageous. some years we spend 70% of our budget on recurrent items. Ghana with a lower GPD per capita than us operates a fully deregulated downstream sector, why the hell can't we? We should pay more taxes, we should stop shouting "democracy" while at the same time clamour for a pseudo-socialist state. 4 Likes 1 Share |

fachfouch: Oh I agree, hence my earlier mention of DRC and Libya not deserving their ranks. But, we're discussing GFP, not some other ideal ranking system. For better or worse, GFP methodology uses the indices it does, and by that measure, we can't quibble. We all have access to the same data, and we could compile our own rankings, including and excluding certain indices as we wish. 2 Likes 1 Share |

This morning, the Tunisian Minister of National Defense, Mr. Ibrahim El-Bertagy, supervised at the fishing port of Sfax the flotation ceremony of the Istiklal class “Dogga 214” patrol boat, which is the fifth out of seven (7) floating marine units that are manufactured in partnership with the Industrial and Naval Construction Company “SCIN”. On this occasion, he authorized the launch of the production of a 50-meter model Patrol ship. It was named Kairouan. He expressed his hope that this cooperation between the Ministry of National Defense and “SCIN” company will rise to its highest levels by continuing to work on creating a hidden company with a joint contribution between the public and private sectors, calling on the concerned structures from the public and private sectors to engage in the field of military industrialization as it is an engine of growth and a tributary. One of the tributaries of national security in its various economic, social and security dimensions. 1 Like

lebuhsi: We don't have a revenue problem, we have a transparency problem. What percentage of all taxes collected actually make its way to the government? 60%? 40%? And of this percentage that makes its way into government coffers how much actually gets utilized for what its meant for? And do you think it's fair to ask a business man who has one or more generators in his shop, vigilante for security that he pays out of his own pocket, borehole for water and who has contributed money along with his colleagues in the same locale to tar the road to pay multiple taxes to the government? Taxes are supposed to be used for development, but here they are mostly used for funding spending trips to Dubai by the elite. Do people in the Ghana or South Africa that you mentioned normally act as their own government by providing amenities for themselves? I doubt it. And we are the poverty capital of the world, remember? Impoverishing people and then asking more of them to pay taxes to develop the country does not sit well with me. And even if the tax base is expanded as you say, what guarantee is there that most of what's collected won't just disappear into thin air? I think money needed to really develop this country can be gotten by cutting down on government expenses. I'm talking 100k monthly for legislators and ministers, with nothing like allowances. Waste can also be reduced by modernizing the civil service. For fks sake why in this 21st century do we have something like messengers and why would 20 people be employed to do the work of 2 people? Massive reform and trimming of government fat is needed I don't see it happening in this century. As for the subsidy thing, strength no reach to talk about it. PS: a few years ago there was an outcry about plans by the FIRS to use like 200 Million naira to sew uniform for a few hundred workers. The people in charge of collecting tax wan use that kind money just to sew cloth and you think broadening the tax base is the solution to our woes? Nope. A very very very very thorough cleaning of the Augean stable is required. 3 Likes |

BEWARE OF FAKE ADMISSION NOTIFICATIONS INTO NAF COLLEGE OF NURSING The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to a fake and fraudulent admission notification currently circulating on various social media platforms. The originator of the purported admission nomination into “ND/HND programmes” at the NAF College of Nursing (NAFCON) directs unsuspecting applicants to pay a non-refundable fee of N15,500 at the “Office of the Registrar”. To perpetrate his unlawful act, this particular fraudster went further to provide phone numbers, email address and a website as follows;08123366242, 08084683594; forceeducationunit@yahoo.com; aabadmus.com.ng. It is disheartening that despite repeated warnings by the NAF, some members of the public still fall prey to the unwholesome and nefarious activities of fraudsters and con men who swindle them of their hard-earned money for admissions that do not exist. While the NAF is frantically making efforts to track and identify this particular fraudster and others to bring them to justice, the NAF wishes to state that currently, the NAFCON has not commenced or advertised for any admission into ND or HND Nursing at the College. The general public should also be informed that so far, the National Board for Technical Education has approved only the ND programme in General Nursing for the College, which is yet to be advertised. Accordingly, information regarding admission into ND General Nursing programme at NAFCON would be communicated to the general public through the NAF website, www.airforce.mil.ng and other verified NAF official social media platforms. Members of the public are hereby advised to disregard any advert placement circulating in the social media on admission into NAFCON.
