An organization may need only one Economic Adviser but 100 accountants to keep the day to day running of the organization going

Make enquiries from schools or Canadian studies agencies if it is possible for him to gain admission for MBA in Canada with HND.
If this is not possible, let him do BSc (conversion), it will not take more than two years. He should write any professional exam during his programme (he may or may not become chartered in this 2 years of course), after which he can go to Canada for any programme.

You mean PGD in Economics, no school will admit you to MSc Economics with a PGD in Accounting.
Even with a PGD in Economics, admission to MSc Economics can be difficult, because schools often require that applicants with PGD should have a very high graduation grade.
However, the PGD route is a good option, even to Canada.

I give it to you...

You sound very much like an authority and highly knowledgeable in these fields.

Thanks for sharing your perspective which I concur with 100% (except of course, where you said ICAN is useless).

More power to your elbow.

@OP, Please listen to this poster, the answers to all your questions lie with him or her.

Cheers.

Please friends and good people of nairaland help me out to make a right choice am in a cross road with my career, i have HND in banking and finance with upper credit, am i applied for direct entry in a federal university and am giving the option to choose between B.sc ECONOMICS and ACCOUNTANCY, please your matured advice is needed on the one to go for. Do give reasons for your choice

After using at least 5 years to obtained HND (Banking and Finance) certificate now you are planning to sign up for another 3 years for Bsc (Accounting) certificate.

Going back to school for economics or accounting at Bsc degree level is a waste of time. We all know Nigerian school system. If you really want to study then sign up for Professional course like ICAN or the ACCA. Post graduate degree is another route you can take other than the Bsc route.

Or you should look abroad if you really have the time and cash.

Going back for a BSc is not a waste of time please, investing 2 years of your life in this course is well worth it. The discrimination between an HND and a BSc would always rears its ugly head, whether in the foreseeable or distant future.

Accounting will give you a salary/job faster, but economics will give you a more long term career with bigger pay in the long run

Economic is the mother of all management and administrative courses . If you are not above average academically don't bother to go and study economics
That course no be moi moi especially in school where runs no dey happen. Econometric nearly gave me carry over.

Economics. I may be sentimental because I love Economics. Generally, Economics is broader and will expose you to even accounting

Mind you we have seen people that studied either of the above courses but still poor as church rats while people with Yoruba Edu are multi millionaires.

Option 1
1.Go for BSc Economics, since you already have HND in Banking and Finance.
2. Write and pass the CFA exam (if you have money) Or sit for the useless ICAN where you will be told to learn a craft/trade during your induction.
3. Prepare to study Economics up to PhD level (if you fail number 2)

*Note*
BSc Economics alone without additional qualifications in Nigeria is useless.
YOU WILL SEE THAT MOST PEOPLE TELLING YOU TO DO BSC IN ECONOMICS ARE ALSO SAYING YOU SHOULD WRITE ICAN. WHY WASTE 4 YEARS STUDYING A COURSE THAT WILL BE USLESS TO YOU.

Option 2
1. Go for BSc Accounting.
2. Write and pass ACCA or CFA (if you have the money)
3. Go for MBA.

You know that your end game is to become an accountant at the end of the day regardless of which one you choose.

Why not go for pure accounting and stop wasting your time.?

Just a reminder, Economic at University level is more mathematical, infact it's more of the advanced maths. Note this and prepare your mind toward that.

Accounting will surely comes easy for you at University level now but you might need to fight for the grade in Eco and this country is not interested in what you study but what did you graduate with, if you graduate with FIRST CLASS in accounting is far better than joining the multitude in SECOND CLASS UPPER in Eco.

My little advice of many years in the market.

Economics cover accounting. Accounting is a second grade course like Mass Communication. English Studies and Linguistics and Yoruba cover Mass Communication

Most of the men in CBN are economist.
Kai, dem don waste money send this one go school .... Imagine English is a second grade course... course wey dey turn people wey sabi into Millionaire.... and Imagine saying Economics covers Accounting?

Pick a secondary school economics textbook and Secondary school accounting textbook and check the two for comparison ....

The only sense in your post is CBN and CBN is all about Monetary Economics....

I can also tell you that most of the men in the Office of the Accountant General and Office of the Auditor General are Accountants ....

Most Companies have more Accountants than Economists ....

Just go for economics if you feel that you can do it. I majored in accounting, I won't want to say that I regret it though but then I would have done something else. You just need an ICAN to become an accountant, so with your degree in economics it should be pretty straightforward for you. I am not saying Accounting is bad, just saying that you can still become an accountant without having a degree in it.
You regret studying Accounting.... You don't even know the value of what God gives you ... you should have studied Adult Education now ....

Who regrets Studying Accounting....

After Economics that's covers all aspect of Economy next best discipline is Accounting...

In fact, an Economist without the knowledge of accounting is a useless economist and an Accountant can operate efficiently and effectively with a small knowledge of economics...

That's why an Economist is always advice to go for ICAN or ACCA or CFA(There is accounting module in CFA) if not ordinary Economics may not take your far except you sabi road ...

Ordinary economics will take you far if you advance your study via MSC and PhD in economics or any of her specialisation ....

With Accounting... Just B.sc and ICAN/ACCA/CFA is enough to take you to the world or atleast Nigeria !!

Who regrets such a very Discipline with a Cabal body called IFAC .... Accounting is one of the most prestigious course in the world and one of the most protected Job in the World !!

Good morning bro,I am an Economist let me explain it for,Economics is a more profound course to Accounting,It touches all departments and they can work in all departments, they are like Bleep throw them up they will fly,put them in the water they will swim, put them on land they will walk(which means they are versatile).

Accounting is micro rather than macro but bro in Nigeria accounting has more job opportunities than Economist I must tell you especially with ICAN.

If you must go for Economics, please endeavor to go for 2 professional courses that can make you indispensable(Go for ICAN and CIPM)

Infact chat me up on WhatsApp let's discuss 07039476669

HI, I'm asking this question on behalf of my son. He will finished his HND accounting next year. Should I advise him to write ICAN and skip BSc. or should I tell him to go for MBA in Canada? (I'm not sure if this is possible without a B.sc tho.)

Thanks
If you can advise him to write ACCA and accept option of Btech in Accounting from Oxford Brooke's University, UK then he may not need to enrol for Bsc again ... He should be able to proceed to Canada for MBA afterwards using his ACCA and Btech as entry requirements because HND doesn't enter MBA oo ... I doubt ! ..

I know for sure HND doesn't enter MSC!

I am an Accountant. A chartered accountant. I also have economics friends. I can tell you for a fact that if you have 20 graduates of accounts and 20 graduates of Econs with good grades, all the accountants will get jobs and only about 5 of the Econs guys will get a job. The skills that an econs graduates will provide will be taken up by the owners of the business. It is only the big companies that will ask for Econs. Even at that, they will have to compete with the banking and finance guys for the job.

However, an econs that gets a good job will earn more than an accountant in the future.
cool ... But in terms of Skills set and knowledge of the Business world vis-a-vis the Economy ... An Accountant will struggle especially when Economic indices such as Inflation, Interest rates, Foreign Exchange, Fiscal Policy (Taxation), and other Monetary Policies.... An Accountant will be expected to provide solution to business problems based on those indices and that's not a core of our skillset but Management wouldn't know .....

If Foreign Exchange rise or low ... Call my Accountant

Interest rates misbehave : Call my Accountant

A seasoned Accountant must be geared with Business Economics in this 21st century to be well rooted in Business Languages and Phenomenon ....

A seasoned Economist must know and understand accounting if not ... He/she won't get job in Nigeria except being a Lecturer and that's after M.sc economics !

Don’t let anybody fool you, the econs is not useful if you don’t write any professional exams in another field eg. ICAN, ACCA, CFA. Don’t think your econs will get you jobs in banks ahead of those who studied Foods and Nutrition or Woodwork. Nigeria does not have sectors where to use Econs. You can’t practice on your own if you studied econs but you can practice on your own if you studied accountancy. The only problem with accountancy is that people are too many studying it and it can be discouraging if you don’t start your career well in a good company. I mean western multinational companies, not all this Saka Jelili Ltd, Hispro Hotels, or Yusdas Enterprises o. I am telling you reality. I have more than 17 years top notch work experiences across various multinational companies and I am a certified accountant.
While you are in school, please try and learn or teach yourself these skills and improve on them over time:

Microsoft Excel. ( don’t fool yourself that you are an advanced user the moment you can use Pivot table or use vlookup or xlookup o. Go and learn deeper Excel. There are free materials online.

Learn financial modeling using Excel to the best of your ability.

Learn Power BI or Tableau for data management, business reporting and analysis.

Learn PowerPoint ( I can give you a YouTube site where you can learn world class PowerPoint for free. I have materials for others too but I don’t guarantee they will be relevant by the time you graduate).

Finish your professional exams on time.

Aim high and target multinationals like GE, BAT, Nestle, Unilever, Atlascopco, P&G, GSK, Microsoft, etc. if you don’t eventually get any of those ones, you will get something closer eg PayStack, Flutterwave, Andela, Hayat Kimya etc. But if you lower your bar, you are in for a loooong thing.

All the best. Best..
Thanks ... Thanks alot for all the Insight !
