(1). Is cigarettes not supposed to be Haram to Muslims?
{Cigarettes ( unlike alcohol ) are not specifically mentioned in muslim scriptures as haram, but you can deduce from the harm it causes that it is a bad and wasteful habit}
(2). Is it not morally unrighteous as an habit?
( morality is defined by society, time and generation , no one will smoke in the same situation today)
(3). Is it not an intoxicant/stimulant that changes ones behavioral pattern?
( it is not an intoxicant , a stimulant yes but doesn’t change behavior)
(6). Is it not primarily a western culture?
( many things are western culture, including corn flakes and marmalade and motor cars and planes)
(5) Does it not harm the health of a smoker?
( Yes it does, that’s why there is less smoking now. The change is gradual , people are still smoking marijuana and crack cocaine and drinking alcohol, they are all harmful)
(4). So why do Muslims feel cool with cigarettes but condenm alcohol?
( It is faith. Alcoholic substances are specifically mentioned in the scriptures and prohibited and they do more harm then cigarettes- please search and read and not all Muslims feel cool with cigarettes)
FreeStuffsNG: As at then, public smoking is normal and permitted. In fact, the most popular ads on Tv and Radio then were by Tobacco companies. You will hear on radio ads like "Cigar Target o!Na wa!". But a lot has changed now so much that even cigarette packs now carry warnings that you are liable to die from smoking. Late President Shehu Shagari at that age, is not different from most of his age mates then ,he was probably in his late 20s or early 30s in the video and he's still looking charismatic. So it's not a big issue.
The late Prime Minister's clearly brilliant and knowledgeable about the subject he is talking on as this was a big issue then to discuss because of the civil rights movement in the US , so here he's throwing Nigeria's big national pride and international clout against racism considered then such sensitive international debate. Wow!! No one will believe he is the leader of a country that was barely 5 years old with such aura and authority of power & influence he was oozing ; he went as far as stating categorically what he told the US political leaders while in Washington against racism. His diction and command of English is topnotch and his trademark baritone voice is so Presidential and reminds me of the voice of late Dr. Martin Luther King.
Up till now, I still wonder why this man and others like Chief SL Akintola and Premier Sardauna Alhaji Ahmadu Bello had to be assassinated. Unlike their peers in other regions who lived long enough to reproduce more of their followers, these two Leaders of Northern extraction were killed in their prime and did not live to do that for the North and till date, sets the North back so much that they are yet to recover. May we never experience such calamitous national loss again. God bless Nigeria. Our heroes past shall not be in vain. @ OP , thank you for sharing this.
Probably, the British masterminded it to remain in CONTROL. Similar to what France is doing in many African countries today.

Even bokoharam are using drugs They are using guns and bombs even drones made by Western education. Islamic jihadists only have one thing in mind to kill to steal and to destroy. The religion is based on violence, the most vile human in history is their pedophilia prophet. Everything in that religion is fashioned to serve the lust of Mohammed. Anything he dislike he will claim to hear or get revelation from Allah immediately. He asked all of them not to marry more than 4 wives yet he himself got about 13 you no see say na mumu dey follow Ahmed? He slept with his adopted son's wife, then he has to abolished adoption in Islam to cover his shame that the guy was his adopted son Ahmed na werey
MALIGNANTGuest: IF the NORTH has got these kind of people, please how did PMB get admitted into the Army in the first place not to talk of emerging as the preferred candidate of the elites for civilian rule too.
It's really preposterous. PLEASE can one compare TAFAWA BALEWA and the present day Gov. Wike.? Can one spot the charisma and decorum.. Chaaaiiiiii Present Day Wike has Epilepsy of the Mouth.
Infact Nzeogwu who was not the leader of the coup but the main face was more culturally Hausa than ibo
More like a leftist coup organised by idealists. Of the five one was Yoruba. It is thanks to the Yoruba guy that we have a detailed account of the aims of the coup.
Go n read your history Wella
The General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, was compelled to take control of the government of a country in upheaval, inadvertently putting Nigeria's nascent democracy on hold.[5] His ascendancy to power was deemed a conspiracy by the coup plotters, who were mainly Igbo officers, to pave the way for General Aguiyi-Ironsi to be Head of State of Nigeria

Both of you are right to some degree; not completely though.
The land, Nigeria, will never bless those who curse it. Don't be surprised when you reap only bad luck from the land because of your curse. That you're even making such a curse around this time of the day has spiritual implications on you too. You don't start your day with a curse, it comes back to you. Everything in life happens for a reason. Mistakes were made and lessons learnt. That explains why every patriot keeps praying for the country. These patriots did not die in vain. Some countries never recovered, from Pakistan to Libya to Afghanistan to India/ Bangladesh and even some European countries that make up the old Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia etc. Nigeria is blessed. God bless Nigeria more.
GOD blessings are already bestowed upon Nigeria but only patriots will reap from that unlimited pool of blessing. I so love Nigeria, I believe that I will make it in Nigeria someday because the land is green. I would not choose any country over Nigeria not even the almighty US.
Yes it was popular in those days but Britain would have probably wanted to install a Nigerian Government that will do it's bidding to keep control of its agricultural and mineral interests.
Not necessarily intelligent. Good diction. Good basic and secondary education. English secondary school teachers
Africans are really dumb. Oga define intelligence. To think some ppl like this useless comment is excruciating. Really dumb ppl. U that is intelligent them even know you for your family? Exactly!

So apt, just like the then PM, this poster writes with much vigor and knowledge, me like you already. To the topic at hand, the Ibo people really set us back a lot in this country and now they're still the one shouting Biafra up, down and everywhere..... fact is someone should be brave enough and tell those people the truth
This was in the 50s or 60s, Cigarette smoking was the in-thing then and was allowed in public gatherings back then. Even in the 80s when Shargari was President he continued with it and many of his generation.
The research that gave credence to cigarette smoking and likelihood of death was conducted in the 70s.
BizzBizz: A viral throwback video shows the moment Former Nigeria's President, Sir Shehu Shagari Lights up a cigarette while Nigeria's first and only Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa is addressing an audience
omenka: Back in those days, it was commonplace to find world leaders smoking irrespective of the time or place they find themselves. Churchill was especially good with that and so were some US presidents. It wasn't a behaviour that was frowned at back then- people were simply allowed the freedom to be themselves.
But with the modern changes in etiquette, the press could chew one like a cod if one tried such today. Environmentalists, behavioral psychologists, health experts, etc will come for your head.
Was amazed to see some nairalanders attribute his conduct to "abokism". Appalling.
Nairaland is a forum governed by hate and a forum that stands by hate. My few months here has shown me that.
The killing of the politicians from the northern extraction by Agui Ironsi was the beginning of distrust amongst Nigerians. He was selective and favoured politicians from the southern part of the country.

You sound intelligent yet one can see you’re nothing but a tribal bigot!
