She took the toasted bread her mother had made

'Oh, how I'll love to be in Abuja to see him,' she told her mother.

'In this your condition? You can't travel now.'

'Why not? Are you saying a pregnant woman can not travel?'

'What will be your purpose of going there? Are you the one to treat him or are you a nurse?' There was a long pause.

'Poor Bayo,' Ada said, more to herself. 'He must have gone through a very terrible experience!'

They suddenly came to the edge of the desert. So, a desert could have an edge. Bayo was nonplussed about the scenario. The edge had what
looked like a deep gully.

'Peep through,' the strange man said. Bayo complied. The gully was deep and seemed to have no end.

'What can you see?' the man asked.

'Nothing,' Bayo replied.
'So why were you in a hurry to come over here? Why were you in a hurry over nothing?'

Bayo wanted to protest. He wanted to tell this stranger that finding himself in that place was not his own making, and that he had not been in
a hurry to be there. He wanted to say these but he could not. Words froze at his mouth.

'You 're lucky,' the man continued. 'You're lucky that I came here with you. If you had come alone, you would have had no choice but to go
down the cliff.'

Bayo looked relieved. He didn’t know whether to thank the man or keep quiet. He chose the latter.

The man looked at him intently. 'And why are you carrying all these load?'

Bayo wanted to protest again. He wanted to protest that he was not carrying any load. Before he could say anything, he realized that a big
bag was strapped to his back. Why, he had not noticed that before!

'Certain load is necessary, but certain ones are not. The ones you're carrying are unnecessary. Drop them.'

Without any word of protest, he dropped the bag.

'Now, go back to where you were coming from.'

It was the last thing he heard from the man. He looked around him. The man had disappeared. Bayo was filled with terror. His body shook all
over.

Slowly, he turned around. He must obey the last order.

When Bayo became conscious. He was too weak to move his body. Even his thinking was feeble. He was aware of somebody looking at him. The man was wearing a white coat. He called the attention of another person. They looked like ...they looked like...He could not remember what they looked like.

It appeared he was tired. Very tired. Why was he so tired? When did he become so tired? Why was he just like this? His mind was foggy. He
tried to get up but he could not.

The men were saying something, but he could barely hear them. One of then made a face at him. No, the man was actually smiling. What was
he smiling about? What was funny? Just then, a woman and a man came to his side. The woman looked familiar.

Faintly, he remembered that he was supposed to travel. Then...no, he was not just supposed to travel, he was actually travelling. Where was
he going? What happened? His mind became a bit clear. Of course, he was travelling from ...from one place to ...another place. He wanted to
meet a big man. Why was he here instead of seeing the big man? No, no, he had not got to where he was going. He was still on his way. No, he
was on the Sahara desert. He was... Bayo became confused. He closed his eyes and opened them again.

One of the men was putting a pin inside his body. The woman was saying something These people were wasting his time. He must get up to see the big man he wanted to see. But he was...he was...He closed his eyes.

He opened his eyes again. Unknown to him, between the other time he closed his eyes and now, eight hours had elapsed. He had spent over thirty hours on the hospital bed. This time around, his thinking had improved. The men he saw the other time wearing white were still around. Now, Bayo realized that they were doctors and that he was in a hospital. Was he sick? Who brought him here?

Then he remembered he was on an Abuja bound plane. They had been on flight for over forty minutes. Then, trouble loomed. The captain had said something like he was going to make an emergency landing.

Fear had gripped all the passengers on board. The next passenger to him had burst into tears. Bayo's mind was in a quandary. That was the last thing he remembered.

He could hear what the doctors were saying now.

'He's making a remarkable progress,' one of them said.

'Yes,' another one said. 'Lucky chap.'

'Very lucky chap,' the first doctor concurred.

Just then he saw Sade and a man with a Bible coming to his bedside.

'He's awake', Sade said. 'I hope he'll fully recognise me now.'

Bayo was a bit puzzled. Was there a time he did not recognize his wife?

'Good afternoon, Sade,' he greeted.

'Ah, the Lord be praised. Glory be to God,' the man with the Bible said.

'Good afternoon, dear,' Sade replied.

'Thank God you are in full consciousness, now. God be praised forever.'

Ada was told Bayo would remain at the Abuja hospital for few more days. His survival and recovery was a miracle. However, he had a problem with his spinal cord.

Ada did not know the details of the spinal cord aspect but it did not matter much to her. What mattered was that he recovered and would
soon be back in Lagos. What she looked forward to was holding him in a tight and passionate embrace. Ada shuddered at the thought of Bayo
dying in the crash.

What a close shave he had with death. If Bayo had died, what would have happened to her and the unborn child? How would she face those
her colleagues at work? How would she cope with life without him. Only God knew how bad things would have become.

She thanked God he had survived. It was a paradox that among all people, she was the happiest about Bayo's survival. She had decided she
would be closer to God now. In fact, she decided that she would go to her church to give testimony on the issue of Bayo.

Bayo and the remaining lucky survivors kind of became celebrities. Among the people that came to see them were the Minister of Aviation in the company of the Minister in charge of Federal capital territory, Management of ACC Airline, and hordes of journalists. Just as he thought he had seen them all, an important looking man in grey suit came to meet him.

'You're Mr. Bayo Adeyemi?'

Bayo nodded. Even nodding took a lot of effort.

'I'm John Kure, Special Assistant to the AGF.'

Bayo remembered talking with him. He was the one he was to see first at the Ministry of Justice. The man offered his hand for a shake.

'Sorry about the whole incident', Kure continued. 'The AGF sent his sympathy. Don't worry, we'll reschedule the meeting. At your convenience.
For now, you need to get well, first.'

Bayo said he was glad and he appreciated everything.

After four more days at the hospital, Bayo was to be discharged. He was however referred to the national orthopedic hospital in Lagos for further treatment. Since the accident, he had not been able to move his legs. It was as if those parts had become totally numb.

His mental consciousness and alertness was fully back. It was not easy to survive a plane crash. God must definitely have a hand in his survival. So, that was life. With all the hassles, he could have died, just like that. Indeed, he realized, there was great truth in saying life was all vanity.

He had retrospect of his life. If not for divine intervention, Sade would have become a widow now and his children would have been fatherless. He thought of those little ones - Bukky and Tomi. In recent time, he had been a bad husband and a terrible father. He must amend his ways.

Then his mind wandered to Ada. How was she? She had not even visited him yet, but then, her condition did not encourage that. Bayo would
have loved to call her but he had no access to phone yet. No problem, he would soon have access. The more he thought about Ada the more he became convinced that something was wrong somewhere. What could that be? He would soon find out.

'Daddy!' Bukky and her sister screamed as soon as they sighed their father. The car that brought him to the house had just parked and the door opened. The driver quickly opened the boot of the car to bring the wheelchair. Sade too had come down from the car.

Bayo and his daughters embraced passionately.

'Daddy, you're welcome,' the younger one said. 'Mummy said that you travelled and you had an accident.'

'No, it was not an accident. It was a plane crash,' Bukky said.

'Alright,' Sade quickly intervened before the matter generated into an argument.' Daddy is back now, and that is the important thing.'

'How are you, my angels?' He asked them.

'Fine,' they chorused.

Sade and the driver helped him into the wheelchair.

'Why are you carrying daddy on that chair?' Tomi asked.

'Because daddy is too weak to walk for now,' Sade explained..

Kike came out of the house to join them. 'Welcome sir,' she greeted and curtsied. Them she quickly added: 'Sorry about the incident, sir.'

'Thank you, Kike. How are you?'

'Fine sir.'

Kike wanted to take over the wheeling but Sade insisted on doing it.

Thanks OP. That was a very interesting piece you put up. I love the energy with which the dialogue in the story advanced the plot. I love your diction. But most importantly, I love that deep sense of realism embeded in the story, which is the underlying feature of the novel. Less I forget, your suspense is great.
