Since you asked. https://www.thecable.ng/enyeama-explains-bifouma-penalty-save/amp

'It takes a player with big balls to change the direction where he normally plays his penalty kicks, especially under pressure"

"When a player is under pressure like that, with their team a goal down, the crowd behind them and needing to score, he tends to go for his comfort zone, which is his best spot."
I was actually thinking about one of our Nations cup exit on penalties and how Enyeama was missing all the kicks and guessing the wrong way, He got lucky with this and became a philosopher, I will find that video clip for you. 6 penalties Enyeama was sold for 5 of them. It was only the last one that he followed the kick.

You have a point about the AFCON being largely uninteresting I can't really fathom why because I don't think the talent pool of the participating countries is any worse of than the days of them Yekini, Abedi Pele, Roger milla and co.

Maybe coaches are worse. Last proper AFCON i watched was 2008.

elrony:
AFCON quality don drop, maybe partly related to administration and talent pool sef lipsrsealed

The fanfare ain't what it used to be.

My opinion shà, you might see it differently.

It's the administration. Not just from AFCON but from participating countries.

Forget talent pool.

Guys, this is easy.

Just like you stated, nothing is certain.

We work with what we have, STATISTICS

For example: If Kane plays 50 % of his penalties to the left, 15 % to the right, and 35 % straight down the middle.

With this, we would surely dive to the left
That is the moment Kane would think I need to get my percentage of shots to the right up and sell you to Cotonou. grin cheesy

See Belottis wasnt even much of a guess dive, Pickfords right foot didnt leave the spot he planted he he just bent to the left, it wasnt like Belotti picked an extreme angle like Jorginho or Rashford and its still within

Most shooters won't go to those far angles
Pure guess dive.

You don't have to leave the spot before diving if you are targeting inside left/right and not extreme left/right.

Pogba and shaw robbed, who does the rating for fvck sake
So you actually think Shaw is exceptional, he is just a hyped job, Chilwell is better than him. Next season will confirm this.

He improved afterwards though 2006 against the same opponents and 2010 against Zambia.

Enyeama the philosopher - he couldn’t save any one of the penalties. The last kick was the funniest, Enyeama left his line and tiptoed forward and still failed to narrow the angle.

This is Enyeama, Tunisians were at home in a Nations cup semi with crowd and pressure. And this is how he did. Did he forget all those philosophies?

None of us on this forum could have done any worse than Enyeama

Without guessing, just following the kick, he should still be able to get down to stop it. It wasn't like Belloti picked a far corner

Unless shooters change their style I think its a better option, You see many shootouts and the keeper is diving to Calabar and shhoter just rolling the ball into the net or those panenka like the one Aguero did vs Mendy

See Lehmann one of the best penalty stoppers vs Ribery and what he did. Penalties like this one from Ribery will be history but you know hw many keepers would have dived to Kinshasha and RIbery will be a god like Pirlo in 2012

That was what Donnarumma did to Sancho and Saka.

He waited for the planted foot before the kick and was able to see the direction of the hip/planted foot. He saved them with class.

From those two frames Sancho planted his foot and shot to that side, Saka planted his foot and shot across the body

Just Saka, Sancho can still play to the other side.

He did the same to Rashford but was tricked.

He couldn’t - look at the direction of his planted foot. You can try it at home. The direction you pick would be revealed by your planted foot.

Expert17:

That was why Rashford missed. If you try to cheat nature by going the direction of the planted foot, you would lose shot power and accuracy. It’s a very difficult skill to attempt. You could even kick your own foot and slip like John Terry in 2008 CL final.

Saka is left footed. He ran from the right to approach the ball. His run up gave his intention away.

Watch where those players play their penalties when it mattered most.

He can, but might miss just like Rashford.

Players are aware of the planted foot rule, so they use it sometimes to deceive goalkeepers.

True.

That is why I recommend following the note, any change of style/run-up/placement from the player might result in him missing.

The note is a guess. It’s highly unreliable.
Donnarumma has saved 13 penalties in Serie A out of 32 he has faced. He’s not saving them because of coach note. He saves them by waiting until the very last second before making his move.

If he’s relying on coach note, he would be diving way before the kick. Rashford kept his eye on him in the run up to see if he would make his move early. Donnarumma waited and waited and waited for Rashford to make his move first.

How so?

Planted foot
Hip swing

You can’t go wrong with those two indicators.

Rashford overcooked his penalty - he was so unlucky to have missed it. What he did to Donnarumma was filthy. The hip deception was heavenly.

You are absolutely spot on with top players not having a constant method of taking their penalties. They change it cos they have a variety of options in their ammo to take one.

This is Fernandes’ shot map on penalties. What will a GK coach note say about this? Dive left or right? grin
Yes, actually. Dive left or right. You just have to wait until he picks his spot before you dive, and Fernandes will prefer you pick a spot and wait till the last moment for you to do so before he kicks it in the other direction.

And when you’re diving, note that when he kicks it to the right the ball hardly leaves the ground and it’s a little bit in the air when in the other direction.

So, just dive left or right and you may be lucky, you just shouldn’t do it early enough.

Jorginho uses the same technique but his execution is way poorer

GloryIsaac:
In most cases, those who choose to play for their motherland do so for these reasons;

1. Not good enough for their adopted team.
2. Good enough but tough competition in adopted team. Means might not get a lot of international caps.

These reasons are at the root of it, the ‘patriotism’ talk is just a deflection.

If a player is assured of his place in the national team of his adopted country, and they have a better chance of going far in the tournament, he will represent them.

Also put into consideration that these adopted countries were the ones who groomed the player. Most start at U13s or U16s I believe.

Ofcourse, there are exceptions to this, but they are rare.

P.S. Falcao would have had to compete with Fernando Torres and David Villa for a starting berth with Spain. Doubt the success rate if he tried in 2007.
Falcao that made it at Porto?

Jorginho has scored from 29 penalties, missed 4.
Fernandes has scored from 41 penalties, missed 3.

It’s clear as daylight that Bruno is deadlier at taking penalties.

It would be interesting to see Bruno’s hopping technique versus Donnarumma’s waiting game.

Doing this(waiting for the last minute) unsettles the shooter unlike if you just jump like a frog hoping to get lucky
