That means you'll be giving us a lot of Intel on our boys over there. Obi Emegano, Stan Okoye and co.

The US team needs a true PG. A backcourt of Dame and Beal will just lead to heavy Iso ball. They need someone apart from Draymond whose job is just to set every other person up. Just like Jkidd and CP3 did for the redeem team

Makes sense but the truth is we don’t have much of traditional PG’s ala CP3/ Rondo in the league. The NBA supports scoring PG and now at the FIBA level it is hunting us. Irrespective though I personally don’t think that is the biggest problem.

The quality of players they have assembled, depth of coaching, quality of friendlies they have put together with excellent planning and logistics in ensuring these things are executed in a timely manner..

This is the first time we are hearing Team no miss flight, money no dey to execute friendlies or people broda wen no sabi ball or wen their broda dey in charge dey inside team.. It is a breath of fresh air.

Wait until they succeed and become famous, then you will see the incompetents that want to fill their bellies come out of the woodwork. Case in point, after that 96 olympics win, super eagles have never gotten all their ducks in a row, from coach to players to administrator. Whoever is the basketball federation chairman right now needs to learn to play politics, if he is not already.

100%. The FIBA rules do not have a 3s time limit for a big man camping in the restricted area. It also allows a player to tap the ball or swat it away once it touches the rim, unlike NBA where that ball must leave the rim cylinder before you touch it.

Right off the bat, these two rules means that small ball will not be nearly as effective. You need a traditional PG who can facilitate athletic bigs, rather than looking for your own shot. Plus that cylinder rule takes a split second edge off NBA players who are used to letting the ball come off the rim before rebounding.

Lastly, there are no superstar calls. This is something so-called bball analysts like SAS are unable to come to terms with. They cant see past individualistic star-driven game because that is what brings in the money. But FIBA rules give the edge to a well coached and balanced team over the crazy schemes we see in the NBA where the point guard is regularly dropping 45 of a team's 100 points

But the soft calls and super star status would kill this USA team, see as dem dey block kd like pikin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin, but I believe they'll make adjustments and get used to the physical plays that's allowed in international games. But the Americans are funny sha, every time dem dey make reference to Kris Middleton and Booker still out of the team like they'll make any difference or better than the major guys in camp already.

People still underestimate the impact of the 92 dream team and David Stern on the push to make the game global.
The USA is the standard but rest of the world are catching up, not yet close, but the gap is closing. One other thing the rest of the world actually coach the game better at the development level, using the academy system developed for football where young players get professional level coaching. The AAU system has really slowed the technical development of American players in the last decade or so IMHO.

I don't think this is true. I think America does as good a job, if not better, as their European counterparts. And the Europeans don't receive pro level coaching at a young age, because academy coaches can't really be called high level coaches, and thus you won't find them getting jobs in the big leagues. Just like in soccer and even in American basketball. You'd have instances where these coaches coach academy/high school/collegiate kids for their entire lives. Because that's just what they're good at and they're being appreciated and respected for their contributions in bringing these kids up.

I believe the dominance of the US in basketball is due largely to the system they run. Apart from a select few, how many foreign NBA players actually started playing basketball at a very young age? Embiid himself did not play basketball until he was 15. Giannis started playing meaningful basketball at age 13. Jokic was about 10 or 11 when he began to develop interest. Compare that to Luka who started playing actively at 8 and you can see why he was already an MPV type player in his second year in the league. Now you look at their American counterparts you'd see that they started playing at a similar age to Luka or even younger. Kobe started playing at age 3. LeBron started at 9 but that's because he was already actively playing football before then.

Most European really just stumble upon basketball by chance. It's an afterthought to them, except for a select few like Luka. But in America they seem to be deliberate about it, and that's because of the system that's already in place.

Giannis started at 15, but due to his break through Greek kids are now taking up basketball. The general age of starting is gradually going down in the rest of the world. Try checking out Australia's development system, Spain and most of the old eastern European block. You will see former pro players coaching at the development level.
USA still has the overall talent advantage, but slowly the rest of the world are catching up. If Africa and Asia can get access to improved coaching the pace at which that gap will close will increase

This I don't disagree with you. It's the notion that the AAU system in America is slowing down their progress that I find hard to believe.

Well we'll see to that. They were 7th in 2019 don't forget that. The Americans are failing to realize one thing, the rest of the world is getting better at the game of basketball, they feel it's their birtgright and i bless God that Europeans are winning accolades right in their stupid faces, even dame is getting exposed internationally and his weakness is showing.
They hardly give the dream his rightful accolades in the media but the players would always praise him cos they know the truth, if giannis was american believe you me they'll be touting him as one of the greats even at this point in his career but check out those fools on espn all they focus is on his weaknesses, if Giannis was also in a big market team they would praise him more but..........
Truth is many countries are catching up fast with them with more foreign players being the focal point of their teams in the Nba. If dem do nonsense dem go nack them again even with their numerous soft stars.

Brotherly, this is just too much anger and frustration in one post and we can do better. I understand we are all Nigerians or have Nigerian heritage but the vess wen u take type dis one too harsh.

The Dream is greatly respected here and no narrative has ever devalued his worth in the history of this game. There is no conversation about Hakeem where he is not respected. However, that is my opinion and it is built largely on my experience. The Dream is a HOF and on numerous committees. A lot of today’s bugs attend his summer camps to learn.. the list is unbelievable. You want to talk about disrespect then talk about Drexler, Robinson! Talk about Isaiah Thomas and the Bird! These guys don’t get the noise and respect! They are all Americans

Giannis has not suffered 1/3 of the criticism that LeBum suffered! How about the #Slimreaper? His own is not just disrespect, he is HATED because he is not likable and does not fit into a regular category..Curry? Until today, AD still does not get the respect he deserves. The Lakers lost without AD but somehow it’s AD’s fault because he was hurt. These cats are Americans who are also dealing with the tough American media.. The media are very critical, however you must realize the mainstream is created to make talking points..

For the most part Giannis has been protected from media criticism., believe it or not, it is well documented. If anything, Giannis has enjoyed a conscious effort to reward the Bucks with a title. On this thread, no one wants to speak negatively about Giannis and even when I do, I am insulted and called all kinds of names and that is a similar situation here in the US.
Giannis is well respected, using banters to highlight his weaknesses does not relegate his value..

Every Superstar understands the attention/criticism comes with the territory.

Giannis no be star player, he is a superstar player on a super max contract so baba, it comes with the territory. Giannis is the most protected Superstar in the league, I dare you mention another player.

This heavy loss was necessary to bring Nigeria back down to earth, because they were getting too cocky. Shows there's still lots of work to do and right now, fans should adjust their expectation of this team.

There's no doubt that the rest of the world is catching up. I've agreed to this already. Even Spain don win US before. America has lost about four gold medals out of the 17 or so Olympics they've been to, so there has always been some sort of competition. But for this year, you'd be crazy not to put your money on America. There's a good blend of offense and defense in this team that was selected.
