Does the Federal govt have the right to take your money in the bank at any time?

First of all, I firmly think the artifacts should be put under the custody of the Oba. However, the Oba has no legal standing on the matter, and can only get what he is given by the Nigerian State:

1. FG routinely takes the money of people who have passed away, as do most governments around the world.

2. The Kingdom of Benin was annexed by the British Empire in 1897. In other words, it ceased to exist - as in, it passed away.

3. The artifacts legally belong - unfortunately - to the inheritor of British Empire - i.e. Nigeria.

4. The last Oba of Benin Kingdom- Ovonramwen - died in 1914, but his throne was never restored to him. His son, grandson and now great-grandson, are allowed to keep their title and status as traditional rulers in modern-day Nigeria, at the pleasure of the FG. (Note the intentional use of the word allowed).

NOTE: they are called "Oba of Benin", but not "Oba of Benin Kingdom" because that kingdom no longer exists. One cannot be a kingdom unless sovereign.

It's all unfortunate and I don't like it at all, but there you are.

It will be handed over to the state Governor then can be handed over to the king. Or even taken to the state museum …

They were done in Benin

Go to igun Street at sakponba road

They still do it till now

If you go all round even down to Cameroon they all did bronze artifacts..

So we're all artworks looted by the whites? Where are the art works from itsekiri.. Uhrobo.. Ijaws.. And other tribes around Benin..

And Benin always had their own share because you give what belongs to ceaser to ceaser..

Yes they can still do it till now because the fame it generated.. People will always come to Benin for the bronze.. Irrespective of if the looted artifacts were returned or not..

Cheers.. But its better of under the Government.. In the sense that it should be in a place accessible to everyone..

But the royal family will have to see its daily maintenance and so..

So I think it shouldn't be inside the Palace.. Because if u put it inside Palace it will be there for just the royal family and most of his psychophants..

But if its public.. Everyone will start knowing the truth about our country.. And it's history's..

Secondly those artifacts were looted due to a reason.. If that same thing repeats you know say na Nigerian soilders go enter this time..

Aboki no send.. So its better the royal family work out something with state govt and leave federal govt out

I really don't understand why people are sentimental and bias about this issue.

It makes more sense for the Edo state Government to keep it since where the bronzes were taken are now under their jurisdiction.

The reason it should not be handed over to the Oba of Benin is because the traditional system has no recognized role under the constitution and there are no checks and balances to check the excesses of the traditional body. For instance, what stops the present Oba from keeping those bronzes as his personal property if handed over to him.

The Oba won't keep it as a personal property. He requested that a museum be built Within the palace premises and the artifacts be kept in the museum Which is a welcome development. It will add more to the prestige to the Benin culture, The Benin royal stool and the state at large

Oga
.. na long story u dey type..

I'm telling u that most of what we call the Benin artefacts are from igun in Sakponba road..

Obviously there'll be some from other tribes but majority are from igun

Goan ask Urhobo, ijaw and itsekiri where they put their own artefacts..

Only few will tell u that it was in Oba palace or Benin

I knew there will be a stampede by the Europeans to return Africa's stolen treasures in this perilous times because they know what is coming for them. If you think Germany is returning 1,300 stolen artifacts out of the goodness of their heart I don't even know what to tell you.

It belongs to the Oba of Benin if it was originally stolen from his palace. Common sense. The Oba of Benin in conjunction with the FG should decide what to do with the artifacts.

Those artifacts are the personal property of the oba. It is the oba that commissions the bronze carver to do the works for him. It and I repeat it is the property of the Benin monarchy

This simply means both the palace and the State govt will make individual proposals to the FG and the FG will decide what to do to the artifacts.

The State government has a better plan for the artifacts with the Edo Museum for West African Arts.

I bet even some other States, especially the Lagos museum, will benefit and have a share from the almost 2,000 pieces.

Excuse me? Why should the Lagos museum have a share of the Benin artifacts? If obaseki is really serious about culture, let him restore the Benin moats and walls. At least those are under his jurisdiction

If you ask me, I will say "Leave them in Germany".

The State Government can sign bilateral agreement with the museum in Germany and get a certain percentage (70%) from the proceeds of exhibition. Why? Because Nigerians do not place values on anything. The looted Bronze will be placed where it will be left unkept and yield no income for the people/government of Edo State. Our maintenance culture is inexistent. In all, lose:lose for every party involved. One day Oba's palace go burn and the artifacts will go with the inferno.

/

And how did we maintain them for hundreds of years before the European bandits stole them, even if your suggestion is put to them they will refuse it and insist on returning them because unlike you they know the times and season we are now in.

To be fair, I think the obaseki idea would have been the best.

He wanted to create a museum to display these beautiful arts to generate revenue for the state.

The oba wanted it in his palace where it would be probably be under restrictions, and all revenues will go to him alone.

Lai Muhammed will probably put it in his office, because I don't know if there is any federal museum in place.

If obaseki is really serious about revenue from tourism, he would have ;
1. Ensure security in the state
2. Restored the Benin moats and walls(which would generate even more revenue)
3.funded the proposed archeological ecavation @iso and other places of interest.

The artifacts belong to the sovereign in the land, which is currently the Federal Government.

Yes, they were taken from Benin Kingdom, but that kingdom has long ceased to be sovereign, and so it falls to FG to own these artifacts.

If Benin wants to collect, it should become its own kingdom again, independent from Nigeria.

As for the state of Edo, it has no say in the matter.

Is there a Benin monarchy in existence? Yes or no
Is the current Benin monarchy a direct descendant and successor of the Benin Kingdom of yore? Yes or no

I find your submission laughable. Are you now saying that the creators of those artifacts cannot maintain their own creation? Those artifacts were already hundreds of years old in the obas palace before they were looted

The pyramid of Egypt is serving the whole of Egypt because the current Egypt is the successor of the Egyptian monarchy. As we speak there is no pharaoh existing
