The A-29 Super Tucano is an advanced COIN/CT platform of choice for air forces worldwide. The NAF made a good buy.

NAF A-29 4th generation combined ISR attack aircraft landing at Prestwick enroute Nigeria.

Toju200:
first of all we're getting first 6 soon they've already left the US
The Reason for the delay was because the US were been remodified The US said so themselves.
And what "Bitter truth" are you talking about

Why is it paining you that we had to pay $400mil+ for Turbo prop planes.
We've even corrected you we didn't pay $600mil
And even the $400mil+ covers alot of things
Modifications of the original A29
Two spare engines each
Ammunitions
Remodification of ACTG to fit the A29
Training of 60+ NAF personnel

The A29 was specifically built for CTCOIN operation close air Support,Air Interdiction,ISR
The only disadvantage is speed plus it's speed it near the Aero L-39 if I'm not mistaking correct me here if I'm wrong

Despite the Fact it's turbo prop it's even more quiet than the alpha jet YES!
It can deliver it's payload at a safer distance and altitude accurately
It's ISR capability gives it an edge over most of the birds we have
Instead of the ATR42 or kingAir To Conduct ISR and call in strike assets (Waste of fuel and time also plus putting the lives of alpha jet pilots on the line) the A29 will Easily do both eliminating it's target with Guided munitions Time and Fuel been saved.
The wing loong two the other hand is a perfect platform I wasn't against it.
So NG get both is a win win EOD!!!
How low can you stoop in your quest to support nonsense. The jet was designed as far back as 1967 as a base trainer. It was never meant to have light attack capabilities as it was designed from the chassis of the famous air truck used in crop dusting and fire fighting.

But later some people started hanging weapons around it and before you know it they started calling it super Tucano to sell their market. There is nothing super about this farm plane and it will soon prove that to us in the most scary way possible.

All this and many more Grammer is the way the united states robbed us off our 600Million dollars and gave us planes that they themselves will never use.
Thanks for the info but I am not that gullible. We are fighting a war 400 rockets is not a big number in fact it is a very small number to be ripped off for.

The US War industry is very expensive and most times cut throat, we went there and we had our throat slit for nothing.

How many moons ago did I raise this issue, not with assumptive sentiment based preference but substantively. Using "Best value" and best use of resources for the greatest impact and efficacy .

I got dogs abuse and a barrage of vitriolic rhetoric sent my way, with you mostly on the side of negativity.

Nigeria is facing an existent crisis and somebody is spending $600 million to acquire A-29 Super Tucano and add ons, for an aircraft that has taken 5 years or thereabouts for the 2/3 few to arrive. That incomprehensibly SHOCKING.

I also talked about the possibility of them being susceptible to rudimentary AA Fire from the plethora of enemy technical on the ground. Do not forget this is an aircraft that is supposed to be for CAS - close Air Support. The noise from the Tucano makes its presence well know before it even arrives on the battle scene it is much slower than an Alpha jet , so how safe is it for pilots, time will tell.

The USAF and NATO do not use any of these turbo prop aircraft beyond the experimental, I wonder why

I over flogged the comparison of the Wing Loong 2 UAV's nonetheless Pakistan has just bought 48 estimated cost plus munitions and technology transfer $65 million.

If 48 Wing Loong 2 UAV's were deployed in the North of Nigeria it would literally change the entire course of this war and reduce our casualties tremendously and with ground support almost end Boko Haram.

My friend you must know that stand-off attack capability is the great advantage of Super Tucano. It irritates when people say the Super Tucanoes are slow and then wonder why it is doing well in COIN in the same breath.
Stand-Off is the answer.
The guided bombs will hit you from 3km away.
Decades after Liberia and Sierra Leone and many upgrades, Alpha jets are still diving low to deliver ordinance. Hopefully that is behind us

They may not be crop dusters.

But game changers in this war , ABSOLUTELY NOT, effective in a limited way yes .

However, considering the procurement cost and delivery time, as well as best value and best use of scarce resources as well as battle efficacy in the HEAR and NOW, an absolute WASTE OF MONEY.

That "WASTE OF MONEY" becomes more pronounced and substantiated when alternative platforms and other options are considered in the HEAR and NOW.

I wonder why the USAF and all NATO countries dont field this aircraft beyond the experimental, that should tell us something.
procurement cost I quite agree is on the high side but I guess it has to do with armament coming with the Tucano and generally American military tech are expensive that's why we no even near the reaper drone instead we went for the Chinese cheaper version, time of delivery has more to do with politics, trump sold us this planes not America, left for Obama and the Democrats Boko who they refused to classify as a terrorist group are free to wipe us out since we refused to accept homosexuality..

In the area of NATO, USAF using the Tucano I disagree, America used the Tucano effectively against the taliban

USA military tech is very expensive, I guess the main reason we went for the Tucano is low cost of operation, and precision strike armament no doubt America has the best precision strike assets in the world. I once watched a video of a hellfire missile destroying a person inside a car with the car still intact, just a hole in the roof where it passed and cut the dummy/person to shreds

No mind them, at least they are way faster that attack helicopters and they can fly at higher attitude coupled with precision guided weapons they can hit the enemy kilometers away.

I better wade in here. Did we overpay for the Tucanos? Yes. Are they what's needed right now? No.

Better kits and equipment, plus improved troop welfare and masses of heavy weaponry would have been mote optimal. Buying 10 tanks from china today, 6 tanks from Ukraine tomorrow and some MRAPS from Proforce next month simply doesn't cut it in my humble opinion.

Sincerely, Nigeria is a country that never lacks for money. What we do best is throwing money at problems hoping it will just go away. Deeper examination of what we are facing and possible solutions never seems to occur to us.

So, the latest estimate has it that over 350k people have been killed in this war so far and frankly the future does not inspire me with confidence. From Boko Haram we have gone to ISWAP and now Bandits and Fulani herdsmen are all over the place, killing without limits and having fun.

How many of you here can confidently travel from one state to the other without killing a ram and asking for the blessing of the almighty? This country is fvcked. If you can't see that then you have a massive problem.

Now, say you have a very deadly insurgency in your country and have $600 million to buy the kind of arms that will bring the war to a very speedy and satisfactory conclusion, what do you do with that kind of money?

I don't know about you, but there's simply no way in hell I'm gonna use that money to buy a dozen turboprops. I don't care if the planes in question came with a million free rounds of ammo, rockets and sensors. I don't care if Thanos himself put them together.

What you guys seem to be forgetting here is that the North and everywhere else seeing unrest and killings is a very large place. I seriously doubt that even a hundred Tucanos would be enough to provide adequate coverage, not forgetting that not all the planes bought will be airworthy at the same time.

If I had $600 million and was told to go and shop for war-ending weapons, I would take like $200 million, go to eastern Europe or Russia and buy or beg for around 500 old tanks, from T-62s up, plus IFVs. These can be speedily modernized and the tanks turned into heavy IFVs that no bandit or ISWAP can touch without using heavy anti tank missiles like the Kornet.

I still have $400 million, right? With $200 million I can buy hundreds of heavy artillery and long range MLRS from Russia, Turkey and China. Some of these MLRS will exceed 200km in range. The normal range of any arty on my shopping list should be at least 30km with standard ammo, and double that with RAP.

Then with the remainder of the funds I will buy as many MALE drones as I can. Mainly from China, but the reliability of their aircraft is doubtful.

So, what will I use all these I bought at mammy market to do? It's simple. The IFVs are there to ensure our troops are safer while moving around. The heavy artillery and rocket launchers are there to engage the enemy wherever they can be found, day or night. We don't need manned aircraft for that. What's needed is to establish bases mainly in the northeast and near our borders that are like 30-50km from each other, all equipped with heavy artillery and mutually supporting.

The drones I bought should be in the air 24/7 and concerns about their data transmission capacity can be remedied by buying satellite bandwidth or launching our own satellite. What this means is of course that with drones covering most bandit and ISWAP-heavy areas, there's no way they can pop up without being immediately targeted with arty or rocket fire, with eyes in the sky making sure the munitions raining down are going where they are supposed to. And all without any putting any troops in danger.

My apologies if the above sounds like daydreaming or science fiction, but it does appear feasible and something I would do if I was given $600 million to buy weapons that will change this war for the better. Not even twenty F-22 Raptors a can win this war for us, let alone a dozen Tucanos, unless these turboprops are carrying atomic weapons, as Joscofelix might say smiley

God where did you guys fabricate these news/info from. Who told you that it's only ten MBT we bought.
No one can tell the exact numbers of equipment purchased from China. We only knew of the first delivery and I can vividly remember then Lt Gen Adeosun who received the hardwares then said more are to come, so no one can say the exact numbers.
Any figure you get from defense blogs are mere speculations !
And by the way the super Tucanos where not a wasteful spending.

Please read again. I wasn't making an exact quote. I was making an example of what we like to do in the area of procurement. That's why we have equipment from almost every country in the world and enough varieties of small arms to guarantee a logistical nightmare.

As for the Tucanos, you and I can agree to disagree. But I would be very interested in hearing what you would purchase if you had $600 million in the bank.

Na wah I actually had to re read your post to confirm your not a defence chief, to remind you Nigeria has been at war for 10yrs plus, and we possibly might have more wars to come, like our VP promised soon we shall have one of the best and we'll armed military in Africa, do you think he said this with just the war against Boko haram in mind, do you think the 3 JF 17 we bought for evaluation with squadrons more possibly expected is for Boko haram cause for me I think it's not

Some times the way we look down on this nation is appalling, was it due to your advise NAF bought the ch3 rainbows years ago and became the 3rd nation world wide to carry out drone strikes, we expecting a new frigate, more helicopters, air defense, mini subs, tanks, all coming no thanks to you, nigeria is corrupt yea, Nigeria should be better than this definitely but slowly we making progress, we have military planners, generals who's job is to defend this nation let's for once have a little belief in this nation..

In conclusion the Tucano I too think it's quite an expensive package but we ain't privy to the total information, remember a topnotch airbase was built in kanji by the Americans to house the jets, I want to believe it's all in the 600mil, possibly more armament apart from the ones listed will be arriving in batches too

This is a lot of falsehood and it is based on ignorance and stupid Nigerian culture of commoditizing procurement.

Nigeria paid money for hardware + facilities + training + weapons + lifecycle support.
There are other service elements like weapons integration works.
Inside the money earmarked for the programme which I am sure is still remaining a tidy sum, your legislators sponsored themselves to inspect the aircraft.
I am sure there are still sums remaining for more advanced training for the maintenance crews.

If you don't know stuff, you ask questions instead of adding up aircraft numbers and units of weapons with a calculator like some Iboman buying tiles gor his next building.

You are making a case for drones BUT why are people so amateurish about these things.
Is it PS5 and Xbox mentality carried so far.
Drones are useful but their deployments for impacting the battlefields require some rejigging + it will take some time to get the right density in terms of numbers for them to be impactful like manned aircraft.
A drone can also drop a maximum of 300kg of ordnance say. How is that going to impact significantly against an enemy hiding under trees or inside caves in a very widely dispersed pattern AND an enemy that is always hiding ...period.
The Turkish drones that did so well against Armenia were operating in open terrain with minimum of vegetation and bush cover. They were also only effective against an attacking enemy
