The consulate general of Nigeria in New York says it is making arrangements to enrol Nigerians living in the U.S. for NIN as part of the communications and digital economy minister Isa Pantami’s push to have citizens’ private information on a national database.

The consul general, Lot Egopija, stated this at a “hybrid” town hall meeting held at Nigeria House in New York for Nigerians residing in the area.

There has been a lot of pushback to the minister’s directive that Nigerians must register for the NIN largely based on his past relationship and utterances regarding terror entities, including Al Qaeda, the Taliban and Boko Haram.

A few days ago, Mr Pantami extended the National Identity Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification to October 31.

Mr Egopija explained that the consulate received a directive from the federal ministry of foreign Affairs to enrol its Nigerians living in the U.S.

The Nigerian envoy added that the consulate would soon conclude arrangements with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on the NIN registration.

Mr Egopija recalled that when he assumed office as the consul general a few months ago, he pledged to have regular interactive sessions with Nigerians living in the U.S. to get feedback and update them with developments at the consulate general.

I have to agree with this particular point. For decades they have dragged their feet and made excuses as per making it possible for Nigerians in the diaspora to vote for the candidates of their choice in Nigerian elections.

Yet NIN registration of diasporan Nigerians can go ahead without obstacles. Personally fed up of the Buhari-led government and cannot wait till 2023. Let us pray God spares us all till then.

I'm not a fan of politics here and you should try to limit the argument to what is being discussed (i.e. Patanmi, NIN, New York). Don't go off-point (to Buhari, etc). Then you can now call yourself logical.

How is anything I stated off-point? Nigerians mistrust the intentions of Pantami and rightly so.

This is why Buhari, if fair and committed to serving all Nigerians well, should have sacked him immediately his radical ethno-religious utterances and beliefs were revealed.

In other Countries with dedicated leaders, Pantami would have being sacked immediately because it would be obvious his credibility is gone and he will never have the trust or support of a big part of Nigeria i.e Southern Christians.

It is like having a known and hardcore racist in charge of a racially-diverse community. It won't work and is an unacceptable situation to persevere with.

Folk like you should tell us why Buhari had to insist on sticking with Pantami, thus insensitively dismissing the feelings of millions of Southern Christians, when many untainted and professionally deserving men and women exist who can take over from Pantami and do a better job than the divisive and controversial Minister.

Imagine how Pantami will be viewed in the West where his views, if he were a nobody, would surely put him on the terror watchlist of most intellliigence agencies.
