It's such a shame that we still have so many close minded people on this thread. This is even after we've seen the envelope pushed by so many others.

One of my clients requested for an open kitchen in his personal build. He however added a pre kitchen to the design. The pre kitchen was our regular Nigerian style of kitchen (for our dishes and aroma ) but a smaller one.. Guess what, it turned out well.

Please can you be so kind to put up a pix of the pre-kitchen cum open kitchen so as one can have a better view .......
Thanks.

It’ll work though BUT not without huge sacrifices

I know quite a number of ppl who have this. I also have it in one of my recent designs - a complete open plan living.

Please can you tell us more on such sacrifices to mitigate aromas arising from cooked meals especially those done during frying,etc,etc.......

I know it will work and I have some people with this design too,
So its possible to have two kitchens in a residential building like MAIN KITCHEN and SATELLITE KITCHEN 2 in 1 …..: you divide your food cooking systems into two.
But my take on it is that when we talk about typical NIGERIA kitchen where real local food will be prepare like EFo riro, Ofe Owerri. Edi nka ikon…. Real pounded yam …..FORGET about fully or partially open kitchen design it won’t work here YES I said so.
You can’t compare the way you cook Nigeria food here to the way you cook it in Florida, villa, Nebraska or Ottawa. Abii Iceland or Norway.

House electrical wiring and safety is one area most home owners often do not give much attention. This discussion here is eye-opening:

Smiles.

There are kitchens and there’s well planned cooking space. What we have mostly in naija builds is a room with furnitures, cooking wares and sink.

A well planned kitchen must satisfy the following space planning requirements during design stage:

- cleaning/washing
- food preparation
- meal cooking/frying
- storage
- service area

Regardless of the design, your kitchen can only be successful when it is organized in a way to optimize performance and efficiency.
Your cooking/frying space must be equipped with hood and your design layout must allow for good ventilation.

If big restaurants can have open plan kitchen, I don’t see why we can’t have it at home.

_________

Unfortunately I don’t have pics but there’s a lovely concept I’ve seen in Oniru. The cooking/frying area of the well-spacious kitchen was at the far end corner of the room. The break-point has a frameless glass partition which protects the smelly odors from getting into the living area.

I wish I can do more but I’d try share the layout later here or on kobocity.com

________

Lastly don’t do this if your wife didn’t recommend or approve of it. Don’t do this for a village bae!

Abroad you generally do your own cooking and will take reasonable steps to ventilate and not overwhelm your house with the smell of your cooking.

In 9ja there is tendency to
1) There is tendency to cook more often in 9ja/abroad most people do one major cook at the weekend(soups and all) and store in the fridge then warm up and maybe make rice or swallow as needed.
2) There is tendency to cook more of our local delicacy with the attendant smell. I used to eat swallow only once a week. There is so much more variety to explore abroad that are quick mild cooks.
3) Helpers will more often put all their cooking on high heat with fast and furious cooking or what my mum calls wa, wa, wo cooking so they can finish cooking quickly
4) Often times the vent is not working or they forget to put it on. Even now with windows they keep leaving almost shut.
5) There is the privacy/security issue with helpers being in close earshot of your conversations.

Unless you intend to have 2 kitchens one for all and sundry and another the open plan maybe upstairs for you and your partner it's not really a good fit for the 9ja environment.

In 9ja its extremely important to factor in privacy, safety and security issues in almost all of your decisions.

Everywhere you turn, you’d almost hit a brick.

- Hausas now ride Okada instead of doing labour work. The hausa labourers you‘d see today are inexperienced and very lazy Hausas. The first thing you’ll hear from them is “How mush I go pay?”
- Because of the increase in demand for their service, Togolese & Cotonou artisans now use apprentice for their jobs.
- Yorubas now do Yahoo+ and Cultism
- Igbo artisans would rather do jobs that pays more.

N2,500 per day is really not cutting it anymore for most of these guys.

Baba, you're indeed MADDD! angry

The aboki’s will still give you some value for your money.
Go to almost every major street (I repeat almost every street) in Lagos, there’s always one or more area boys/agberos or land urchins collecting monies for every materials that is moved into the construction site in the area.

Those guys are mostly Indian hemp smoking Yorubas agberos.

What do you make of that?

Suppliers always factor in their cost into every purchases we make.

I’m perhaps one of the exceptions that survive Nigeria by creating a Little America in Nigeria.

You know how we have Little Tokyo, ChinaTown, etc in the USA.

Okay, the measurements I dropped equals 600 x 700? Nice.

To get it to Ibeju and also installation, how much will it cost in total?

I will provide the design in view if your price ticks.

How much is the cost per square meter for this paint?

Here it is.

I love the staging and presentation of the living room. Very in line with modern living. However, for an open plan concept, the living room is looking too compact and dark from the photo.

For an effective open plan concept, there should be a clever use of space from the design stage ab initio. Thought should be given to ventilation not only for cooking but in case of gas leak (health and safety). Mind you, the cooker is in the living room.
Or even fire if electric cooker is adopted.

Good ventilation is also essential because of the home air conditioning system. Will you be cooking on a hot Sunday afternoon with the extractor on and the A/C on at the same time or use natural ventilation if provided in the design?

There must also be natural sunlight flooding in to limit damp. Cooking can generate a lot of steam if not well managed can cause damp and decolour the POP ceiling. So space, ventilation and natural (sun)light are essential in the design of open plan.

And don't forget smoke/fire alarm and carbon monoxide alarm.
