I don't know about your tribe, but in mine right before the white men came, men weren't allowed to be irresponsible. Infact one of the ways a young man would prove himself was building his hut, and taking up a profession, either as a farmer, hunter, trader or whatever. And yes, there were consequences for just impregnating a woman you didn't marry.
