Why Is Nigeria Not Using The Hourly Payment System? by Nobody: 1:11pm On Sep 01, 2021
Yesterday, my team members were working on their official assignment when our direct supervisor called them to return immediately to the office because he wants to use the operational vehicle to go to a meeting outside the office. Unfortunately for them, they were held down by a job that they believed must be cleared before the day runs out.

My supervisor got angry with them for coming back late and told them they are not permitted to go to field for the rest of the week, just because of yesterday's offence. And this decision is obviously without the knowledge of his higher superiors.

Having a discussion with these team members, this kept me asking what if this is a hourly payment job that their salaries will be paid based on their hourly input, is this how he will stop them for no genuine reason.

But wait!, why is Nigeria not using the hourly payment system, won't it have been better in every way?

If only you have sighted an appointment letter of a Nigerian employee, you will understand that Nigeria is very magnanimous. The pay are stayed as annual salary but the government being "so magnanimous" took their calculator to do some mathematical calculation to arrive at the monthly payment.

So please let the sleeping dog lies. No go let Sen. Ngige read this my comment o, or else he will present it at the next FEC and you know what that means.

We always talk about salary, if services and products are priced based on hourly rates, who will be able to afford it ?

Ok, you talked about products and services, developed countries like USA, UK, Canada, German and co. that pay workers on a hourly rate, are people not able to afford these things?

Instead, your job function will be rated and reviewed based on its worth.

A medical doctor who is paid #150,000 per month and works 9 hours a day, 5 days a week and 4 weeks a month is only receiving #833.33 per hour. How is that magnanimous?

I trust that if it’s being stated this way and paid a cumulation of it monthly or biweekly as the case may be, they would have fought for a upward review a long time ago.

Nigeria is a scam.

You have summarised everything. I just pity people, having children here. Imagine earning 50k a month. Only God knows what comes down to per hour.

Hourly?
Well it depends on your total package. If its reasonable then the hourly system would make sense. Not someone earning 50k, you now prorate it per hour, how much will it be? It can't work in Nigeria.
Better to just save it up for them till month end at least to make it tangible enough.

What am I even saying?..

I'm out!

Sorry you do not understand.

In fact,my writing is inspired by a related event that took place in Akwa Ibom State. There was a labour crisis in the State Polytechnic over delay salary payment. The salary accumulated to over six months and yet no hope in sight.

A panel was set up(as usual). So the panel requested that the reps of the lecturers bring his appointment letter. It was presented. He read the details where the salary was stated in annual figure. So the panel told them that "government was being magnanimous" to pay on monthly basis.

So 50k was what came to your mind?

You forgot that minimum wage is #30 000 and some even earn less as we speak.

Men. I don't even know what to say and people are predicting Nigeria to be double of its current population in 20 years. Only God knows what will happen then.

Maybe when you understand the meaning of magnanimous.

Also, do something about your ignorance.

Hourly wages would increase productivity in Nigeria if strictly implemented.

BUT

1. Workers must be protected from heartless employers.

2. The laziness of the typical Nigerian worker who would try to do minimum payer for maximum pay would really be exposed. cheesy

You still don't get it.

It shouldn't depend on the total package first rather the pay per hour. The employer can always add it up and pay it once at the end of the month. If a 50k/month earner divides his income per hour, he will only discover how poorly he's being paid compared to the nature of his job/input.

That way, he will know his worth and protest for a higher pay.

I know a girl that serve as waiter in bar , they pay her 12k

She works 15 hours a day
6 days a week

She earns 30 naira par hour or 460 naira a day , she works for 420 hours a month , yet some month she will get shortages from people that drank and escaped without paying

To me paying her that monthly is better than in hours , that's how most Naija jobs are

The thing is, hourly payment system will render a lot of people jobless cos what they do for a whole day can actually be done in few hours. It will bring productivity but then, you want ASUU to go on strike again.
