[quote author=true2home post=105619971]Speaking of doors, I recently got some naija made doors for internal room usage. My builder went to Mushin supposingly to buy but came back with "I order from factory " story. Anyways, it was three weeks late and middle man was involved. I paid 5ok per door; which is not bad if it holds up over time.

What do y'all think

The only problem you will have is Warping.

The problem with local doors is that they are not seasoned.

Treatment of wood includes oven-drying. At a set temperature, moisture is extracted from the wood. That prevents warping.

Here in Nigeria, we use the natural method. If you leave a freshly cut piece of wood (not log) overtime, it warps naturally.

Those doors are soooo sub-standard.. I'm sure they produce it for the "Nigerian Market" because we desire cheap things (not our fault, we are the poorest country on earth) and anything goes (no standard regulations).

I disagree with you on this
That we are the poorest country
I feel why some people preferred to get some of their building materials outside Nigeria is hoping to buy quality.

For a sample in my line of paints
A owner of house wanted to paint his house with Value paints satin and Matt emulsion products and give his engineer over #800,000 thousand naira

You couldn’t believe the engineer as his own painter he normally used for painting job to scam people their both agreed on producing the paints at the site and paint on #300,000 they both blackmailed the house owner is from Value paints their buy the paints .

To cut the long story short after 2month the paints started failing changing colors on the wall

NOW TELL ME ARE WE NOT THE PROBLEM OF OURSELVES IN THIS COUNTRY?

It’s that the man didn’t pay for what he want

This particular door, frames, keys and handles, hinges, bolt and installation might be below N20,000. I use this normally on rented apartments, especially where high paying tenants are not the target.

Local metal doors, well welded ones with different designs, sizes and colours, Michlins can tell us more about them. It's his own area of expertise.
my advice about doors or anything else concerning building is simple.

If you can't afford the best of the foreign builds, go for our locally made products.

Any foreign door less than 250,000 for 3ft is not worth it. Just calculate the exchange rate and add the cost of shipping and clearing plus other expenses and profit and you will get an idea of what it's like. I saw some wooden doors in Lagos and trust me, they're better than any foreign door you can get with ₦1m in Nigeria now. Funny enough, they cost just about ₦100,000. But you order for them and they will start looking for the woods.

When it comes to rails, don't do anything stainless steel. I have been to an estate and majority of the rails there are already in pieces. And there's no one occupying the houses. The client I was on his project told me point black that none of those will touch his building.

What happens to imported goods is that our people will get there, see the available samples and their prices and choose to buy the least available quality while marking up the prices for maximum profits. Sometimes I don't blame them because the purchasing power of Nigerians are very small and can't afford the best quality. But then we have an insatiable taste for imported goods even if they're fake. I see Aba made shoes branded with made in Italy.

My advice is simple, build as if you're building forever. It's your project and your money so don't allow anyone put pressures on you. Money is hard to come by so spend it wisely.

If you have a plug to import goods and determine the quality, kindly do that. You will be glad you did. Anything outside of that, source your goods locally and determine the quality.

Let me enjoy my "sit at home". I'm supposed to be in Imo state but here we are

best option if you're on a budget. Don't ever use iron doors in your toilet. Don't allow anyone fool you. The caustic soda in your soap will eat your doors like termite versus wood.

This door is your surest bet

Oga mi, even that N20K is wasteful. I have seen ultra cheap doors that were made of palm tree. Make God just they bless pessin. Make we no buy just waiting we see for market but to buy exactly what we want.

I pay a lot of attention to maintenance in my builds. HDF and the like is an assembly of multiple parts. I prefer for " one piece" member. With time and Nigeria's harsh condition and usage, The edges of those multiple members will start to fail. Secondly, scratches will happen, and it will be hard to refinish to match original prints on the HDF. The " ONE Piece" wooden door can be sand and re polish. That's my reasoning against HDF and likes. Same reason i went for Local metal door for my main entrance on my newer build. I love the craftmanship of the Chinese door and american door, but the longevity of the furnishing is very minimal.

Please why are we not also discussing the use of HDF double sheet as hardwood alternative for internal room doors?
A handful of people use them and so far I have not heard any bad news.

Also adjusted my design to hide my exterior doors from weather in my newer design to avoid issues I ran into in my older building.

The last picture, I had to add aluminum pieces as a flush at the bottom of all the doors because rain water was hitting the door and running down into the room from the gap at the bottom of the door and the frame at the bottom end.

This one has actually been exposed to harsh sun and direct rains for nearly 5 years.
This is one of the reasons why we have to be guided when importing.
Not only doors, there are so many other imported materials that get damaged due to harsh weather.
Electrical fittings too and the likes.

Those guys at OdunAde Market call this one turkey classic door. Lol.
The door is best for internal use as it doesn't withstand harsh weather conditions.

Bros you're appealing to sentiment.

I'm speaking facts.

Nigeria is not just Lagos and Ogun and Abuja. Its those villages in Zamfara, in Sokoto, Jigawa without food, light ,water or money to buy 1 bag of cement..

use that aluminum profile doors for bathroom doors. They're even cheap.

For iron doors, ensure that the pipe is at least 1.5mm. The frame should be at least 1mm or 18 guage. Then spend money on a good key. You don't want to be changing your door locks very often. It weakens the pipe which is the frame.

The aluminium fabricated doors are most suitable....and if you must use wooden door, make sure water does not splash on the door and ensure the window is always open for fresh air.....

You don't have to worry if the doors are well crafted and properly installed with adequate hinges because of its weight.
