A friend got a call from his brother to come and work in Maritime Academy Oron. But he is sceptical about it.

Though, here in Ilorin his salary hardly lasts 3 days before he is broke again. He already built his house and married.

In Oron, he will be appointed as irregular staff, as they call it, though, he will later be converted to regular staff after some time.

There is no much difference between irregular and regular staff salaries.

The question now is should he go, is 85 thousand naira salary worth it in Oron? For those who know about maritime academy, pls, your input is needed.

E.g. the actual salary of level 8, security, social life, cost of living and quality of life, hostility from the indigens etc. I forgot to say there might be accommodation.

I am from Oron and Maritime Academy of Nigeria is a federal institution and I advise you choose maritime job cos it's 100% better than the 40k job .

Secondly, cost of living in Oron is very Ok, you can get fresh salt water fish and crayfish as low as #100 .

I am assuring you that if you get to Oron my place , you will immediately plan to move your family there and believe me , you will never remember that your dry Ilorin I visited in 2015.

85k for Oron.....seriously things are more costly in South south than the west....with 40k in ilorin, one can survive there....cost of living is cheap compare to Oron.... transport for ilorin na 50naira, highest is 100naira nd u can still get things at lower rate also but in Oron enh, life there is tough...... though he might make it in Oron big time but life in Oron is like lagos state where the saying goes '' Owo Ekó, Ekó ni gbè''.

He will eat plenty fresh fish and crayfish at Oron. If he is business inclined, he could trade those seafoods at Illorin at a price that will give him profits.

Let me give you my suggestion not advice as an ex student of the Academy. Note that the town is not cheap due to the manner sea farers who school there spend money.

If he will be given accommodation inside the school then he can take the offer. Houses outside the school is minimum of 20k monthly.

The prices of goods and services is even considered higher than uyo. The market he'll find things quite expensive compared to what he gets in ilorin.

The Oron town electricity is abysmal, so terrible he'll have to depend charging his phone in the school which runs regular generator during work hour.

He can take the job if they'll give him accommodation inside the school, else that money will vanish within two weeks on managing levels...

Note that the Academy is the most you can get in Oron since there are no sensible companies.

He should go for the maritime job, I believe one has to take some calculated risk in life at times to leave that perceived " comfort" zone.

Well, I finished from MAN Oron and I have ran professional courses there and I have stayed in Ilorin for good 4years, so I do say a little about these environments, Ilorin is cheap to stay accommodation, feeding is not so expensive thank God he has accommodation sorted, his left with feeling, and family up keep, you see Oron abi hmmm if you're not an indigene lasan you go first pay Weller, I think he might get accommodation withinthe Academy sha, although the new Rector maddd gan, finally considering transportationto visit tour family at least once in a month from Oron to Ilorin kai, I will advice if theirs room for increment in Ilorin biko stay in Ilorin, less we forget Maritime academy work na FG work too oo. Think am well

Why would he fail to meet expectations?

You should join any new organisation with the understanding that you exceed their expectation.

I will suggest that he take his annual leave from his Ilorin Job and test the water at the Maritime Academy for a couple of weeks.
