Bill To Create 111 Additional Electoral Seats For Women Scales Second Reading by Mecka: 6:10am On Sep 21, 2021
A bill to provide more representation for women in government by creating 111 additional electoral seats has scaled second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill codenamed, ‘House 1301’, is being sponsored by Chairperson, House Committee on Aviation, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

It is co-sponsored by House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Onyejeocha, while speaking to newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, explained: “If women are given the opportunity for the next four electoral seasons, at the end of that, they will need to vie for electoral seats. It’s not a permanent thing; it is just to give them the leverage, the platform where they will be tested. Since women are clamouring for so much, it is like giving them a chance temporarily, to see how they can perform.”

Onyejeocha said the Speaker’ s emphasis that gender is at the centre of his administration proves he would ensure it takes priority over several issues including youth, the less privileged and handicapped.

“Yesterday, there was a men’s conference where he gave a powerful commitment.

Today, again, he came here himself and gave the same commitment. It goes a long way in providing equal opportunity for women,” she said.

She said a female Presidency is possible in 2023 if politicians and kingmakers give them the opportunity.“ All the people that have become Presidents were supported by people. If the players, the kingmakers decide that a woman should become the next President , then that is it,” she said.

Onyejeocha added: I am not dreaming to become President. There are people dreaming to become president and I am supporting them.”

Nonsensical nonsense.

Leave the men and guys behind. Everything now is for women. Technology for Women. Entrepreneurship for Women. Art and Music for Women. All sorts of Scholarships for Women everywhere. Even if you dey fund Work, the useless Employers will employ a less qualified Woman over a Man.

That's good, your highly educated, empowered and rich Women will have only dropouts, drug addicts and touts to select from as life partners.

A similar nonsense called federal character or quota system made us to have several illiterate Almajari as heads of several government agencies, ministries and parastatals in Nigeria, now you want to start dashing Women positions

Some people just sat down to discuss how to dash women money or power. Simping is very bad.

Why can't you stupid simps let women earn whatever they get just as the other humans do?

"Give women a chance"...Na who block them? Na who dey give men chance? Na who been give Benazir Bhutto chance for Pakistan? Na who been give Queen Amina the warrior queen (Nigeria) chance?
Some of these lazy naija women just want everything on a platter for free without raising a finger.
See the crowd the late Mama Taraba could muster in the north, go and work for it like most men do.

Firstly they are women.
Secondly, they are victims of people such as yourself that see nothing wrong in slut shaming and all those bullshit.
You people say there is a higher tendency for a woman to get a job but you fail to mention the person making the selection is a guy and at the moment of selection, all he is thinking about is his d*ck.

So, stop blaming women for the sh*t you impose on yourself

What? 111 more seats for what exactly? Where will the funds to pay the 111 seat occupiers come from? From the nation purse that is already looking for more loans to add to the existing ones? Why not create the space from already existing seats? Last time I checked women are already doing way better than before in politics, they're already in electoral seats cos they earned them.

I think feminism is all having a level playing field for all gender. The idea of giving someone an advantage goes against everything it stands for.

Those seats aren't earned

These bastards want to further increase the cost of governance significantly.

A country that is not even in the G-20 Economies.

Why not remove the 111 from the pre-existing seats?

This country is gone.

Parasites everywhere. No single patriotism.

Where is the gender equality that women have been fighting for if they keep giving women slots? Everybody should be given a levelled playing field to fight for what they want, but women are not ready to do that because they know they can't truly compete, and they will be shouting gender equality up and down. This is an example of gender inequality because if the gender are equal then it would be all man to himself and the best person taking the price. Just saying!

We have really brainless people in this country. 111 new seats? So politicians will handpick 111 people, pay them millions of naira to make what changes? What about political parties restructuring their system to allow more women and embrace meritocracy? How can you say you want to experiment with 111 new seats? Don't they have women among them? Are the men doing a good job in the first place? Now that they have opportunities to insert their wives, daughters and cousins, they are talking of rights of women. This is perhaps the most ridiculous and stupid country in the world.

Women can't really compete so they hide under the umbrella of feminism to armtwist men to give them what most of them don't truly deserve. Men fight and work hard for what they want, while women play the victim and lament so as to trick me to giving them what they want. It's how they operate all over the world and the will later start shouting "girl power", "strong woman", etc. When in the real sense they're just pathetic manipulators.

Igbo men are always full of advantages and Igbo women like to use the advantages it only become painful when any other keen observer snatch the advantages to their own use. Thinking through seems a big challenge.

Now, an Igbo woman has laid a request for women in Nigeria to be given sole representative of 112 seats in Nigeria national assembly. When Nigeria want to share out the seats for implementation and they gave 50 seats to Fulani, 30 to Yoruba, 15 to South South, 15 to middle belters and 10 to South East that is when the Igbo woman will start making noise of marginalisation.
Many Nigerians are sleep walking. Some are eating while talking.

Education to degree level does not confer wisdom to to holders it only open more doors to knowledge and understanding. Understanding is with sublimation and humility. Lack of humility in thinking of individual only expound more evils on the society.

The proposed law on gender based representation looks good on paper but its implementation will be fraught with deceit. The resulting effect on the house decisions and the Nigerian society will be catastrophic in dimensions not imagine.

The bill should be withdrawn or killed and thrown into rubbish bins.

For representation of women, let the women lobby and canvass more in their various states and localities.

Are there special electoral seats for men?

And what would these women be doing?

How would they pick 'deserving' women since right now, people contest for these seats?

Since these seats would not be permanent, would the 111 seats be left vacant or scraped if women refuse to contest for it or if they don't win it?

How would this current borrowing government fund the offices? Or are they making justification for another borrowing spree?

@ bold:

I dislike quota systems especially when the talk of merit is discussed except when there is an analytical criteria everyone has to fulfill.

What makes the Federal Character worse is that the cut off marks for entry into secondary schools are not even same. Then fifteen years down the line, Dr. Adamu thinks he is better than officer Chinedu or Analyst Titi forgetting that the latter two actually worked for whatever positions they are at.

This would be more effective and makes sense.

Let the women playing grassroot politics canvas for support to represent.

It is now they would approve the 111 seats and baba would decide to use 97% / 5% sharing formula.

Majority of Nigerians are not smart thinkers.. Only very few people use their brains and it's so sad. Proof is glaring that even in the comments above, most people who commented earlier above were not even asking where will the payments and allowances of these 111 women come from? Isn't this increasing the cost of governance already at a time where this country is dead broke and no one is worried this stupid bill passed second reading.

Leaders are reflections of the people honestly.. Respectfully, I think Buhari emerged because we have more dummies interested in politics than smart people in this country (the smart ones have given up and are not interested). Until we engage our brains and think hard, analyse issues beyond sentiments and tribe, encourage our intelligent ones to take interest in politics, that's only when we will be ready to salvage this country. How does having 111 women improve the economy of this country, can't they restructure already existing structures to include more women.. why create new parasitic addendum, seats that will further take Nigeria to deep mess. These are critical issues we should be raising and not trying to make it gender superiority or balance.

On another thought, I observed that most sensible comments I read on nairaland start from the second page or sometimes 3rd and I think the reason is because most times, they are too busy with their lives to follow topics and comment their opinions immediately.
