Honda 2008 Frequent Oil Change by SatoshiBTC: 5:05pm On Sep 27, 2021 |
Good day house, I drive Honda 2008, I last changed oil at mid May this year. Since then I have only covered 2000miles before my dashboard started showing me that the car is due for oil change. Oil life only 15%. Is this normal? I initially thought that the Normal distance before oil change is 3500miles for my model of car. Please I need input |

U have to reset that maintenance light each time u service the car. The car doesn't know when u change ur oil so the reading its showing is from the last time the light was reset. Also, I wouldn't wait for the maintenance light to turn on before changing the oil, that light won't come on until after around 6,000 miles which might be too much depending on the type of oil and filter used for service and also driving condition. 3 Likes |

SatoshiBTC: - Reset maintenance light after oil change - What type of oil and filter do you use? Mid May to date is 4 and a half months already. |

abatically: The maintenance light was reset after the last time I changed the oil in May. |

SatoshiBTC: For the 08 and later accords, the on board computer continuously monitors the engine's operating conditions such as temperature, speed, running time, etc. That is how it the oil life is calculated and it will notify u when oil life is below 15%. If the light has come on before the recommended time of 5,000 miles then it probably means the system has predicted early breakdown of the oil based on use and engine condition. 1 Like |

SatoshiBTC: The oil life indicator system does not use the actual oil condition to determine the oil life. The oil life is just an estimate using speed, mileage, engine temperature, ambient temperature, engine running time, AC running time etc On older cars, particularly my 2003 Accord, the Main. Reqrd light comes and stays on at 7500miles. This mileage was preset using the genuine Honda motor oil as recommended. If on your 2008 Accord you have 0% after 2000miles, I think something is very wrong. I dont think the car is smart enough to know you are not using recommended engine oil. I can only ask if you are sure that you did the reset to 100% at last service? |

adanny01: I am currently using Total Quartz 7000, 15W-50 to service the car. The least service time was 4.5months ago, engine runs smoothly with low noise |

SatoshiBTC: Am not talking about the type of oil. Every time you change engine oil, you have to reset the oil life to 100% and it is manually done. If you change oil at 40%, and dont reset the indicator to 100%, you can be rest assured it still assumes you still have your old oil. That means you will go less than 2000miles and see 20%. |

adanny01: The indicator was reset to 100% oil life after the last servicing. After 2k miles, it dropped to 15% in 4.5 months. |

SatoshiBTC: 4.5months is a long time coupled with other parameters. You obviously don't go long distances and probably spend time in hold ups with AC. Do you have your coolant thermostat still in place? Maybe you've been running below engine operating temperature and you don't know exactly what parameters they used in the oil life estimation. This may be one of the criteria affecting oil life. Short trips is always a bad thing for an engine. |

adanny01: I drive in Lagos, yes traffic happens and I use AC almost always. Within that 4.5months, I have driven to Ibadan 3 times to and fro, that's the only long distance covered. From the way my fan turns on and off, I guess my thermostat works just fine |
