"Uhu", "Ufu" is still very much alive in some places in Abia state, I believe.

In Old Bende, (Bende, Ohafia and Arochukwu LGAs) the word, "Ufu" features well in their everyday language..... "Ufu", home (ancestral home/father's home) is used as the opposite of "Mba" or "Uzo Ije" in some cases.

People who live permanently in the ancestral village/town are called, "Ndi Ufu" by "Ndi Uzo Ije".

Sometimes, "Ufu" is also used as the opposite of "Ama"... Ufu is where the homes/houses are located, while "Ama" is the village square.

@slayerforever... in Abia state for instance there are villages called Akoli-ufu, Okpo-ufu (Okpufu).

Interesting.
So "Ufu" is a dialectical variance of "Uru" and "Uhu" ?

I will be honest. Sometimes in my private moments I try to imagine what the Igbo society would have sounded like a thousand years ago. I always imagined that if I were to suddenly appear among my ancestors I would not understand them fully. Or maybe at all. Even many practices I would witness would stun me.

I could tell this would be the case because of our place names which we Igbos of today can't decipher. Secondly, I know for sure languages evolve. Some words are dropped entirely whilst some that never existed are added. Some pronunciations modified over ages etc etc.

Mind boggling!

That's all languages. Look at English for instance too...

Funny enough, a few days ago, I listened to some old village rendition from Agulu, recorded around 1911 by Northcorte.... It will be interesting to have someone from Agulu examine how the dialect have changed. Although 1911 is just about 110 years ago though. Some of us must have witnessed great-grandfathers speak.

Yes. Many words and expressions are being dropped to fit into pan Igboism. It irks purists like OdenigboAroli who gets angry that in Idemili we are now seeing children bearing names like "Chizaram" instead of "Chizalum", "Chinaemerem" instead of "Chinaemelum" etc.
He forgot that down south in Imo and Abia people are now giving their children names like Ifeanyi, Ifeoma, Ifenyinwa, instead of Iheanyi, Iheoma and Ihenyinwa. cool

I don't see anything wrong here. Take my own dialect (still in Anambra, to show that it is not a state something) for example, we use "Ihe" but right now I have siblings bearing "Ife"
It is funny because we have an old generation "Iheoma" with a new generation "Ifeanyi" in the same family.
Funny

My grandfather when we were small during Xmas when my cousins all come back for Xmas and we play and make noise laughing loud and merrying would usually leave his room and come to ours and peep in and say: "Kee Ife unu na-ekpolili ufala ka unu ewinugo poolu".
This expression means "why are you people rejoicing like you have won a bet".

I don't think any young person in my place will make that expression that way in modern times.
They would probably say: "Kedu Ife unu enwelu añuli ka unu enwinugo Visa Amerika"

This is language evolution.

Interesting mix going on. The Igbo race is, can I say "merging", or maybe "coalescing".

Exactly.
We are coalescing. But many clannish people don't like this.
They are usually too invested in seeing the influence of other Igbo clans on their own clan, without paying interest to how their own clan are influencing others.
Let me invoke one of them. ChinenyeN, present yourself here for some flogging. Lol! grin

You mean "Ochucho"? "Afifia" becomes, "Efifia".

I just know that many of the "A"s you see in general Igbo or even existing in the spellings of their names, they pronounce it as "E".

"Arochukwu", becomes, "Enruchukwu",
Abiriba = Ebiriba
I know they will call, "Akoli" or "Ozuakoli" as "Ekoli or Ozuekoli"

Not all words though, I know "Abam" is still "Abam

I'm looking at "Ipu". Like: mkpuru osisi na-epu.
To sprout/germinate/grow.

I'm interested in what they call it over there.

Yes I Know about the A to E switch.
They have it in most Enugu dialects to.

Abuo is ebuo/ebuno in Nkanu(Enugu dialect)
Ato is Eto

Efele (plate) is "Afere" in Nkanu
Efe (Cloth ) is "Afe" in Nkanu
Aka( hand) is Eka.
Akwu( Palm fruit) is Ekwu

Many Igbo dialects have that A to E and vice versa switch.

I know that in Bende area, they have this Gwe to Gwo switch.

For example "Igwe" is actually pronounced as "Igwo" by some Bende clans, but for sake of pan Igboism, they will still spell it as "Igwe".

I think it may be a carryover from precolonial era where Igbo communities were strongly autonomous. Hence, the name ndị Igbo would be used to refer to other communities outside one's own.

Check this scenario. A mysterious stranger, perhaps having the appearance of a great dibịa, is coming into the community and he is stopped at the boundary. From interrogation he is obviously a fellow Igbo but a stranger nonetheless. While reporting about the stranger's arrival to the King or elders, the guards would invariably say, "ọ nwe ofu onye Igbo bịara.....". Listening to them one may be confused to think, "are the people not also Igbo?" . You get?

There are no Isoko clans in Rivers State. They are all located in Delta State. By the way, Ndoni people speak Ukwuani/Ndokwa langauge. My grandmother (Maternal) is an Ndoni woman so I know. And what are the names of the clans anyway? Curious minds want to know.

If I ask you what Obiaka means in Isoko now you will feel offended. If I ask you to write down your language here you will write something liking to Igbo. Okay, no problem though, be Isoko.

If the rest of the communities fall under Rivers state it is likely they are all Ndoni people, on both sides of the river.

AGBOR IS NOT IKA

Only a bastard answers to a name given him by strangers. He has no father to give him a name and so takes the name given him by strangers.Agbor has a name “Agbon” (The World), given, according to our mythology, by God Himself. For more than 4,700 years of continuous history and habitation of our land, we have borne that name in our community and wherever we go. Agbor is the name of our land and the language we speak.

Ika” is not the name or pseudonym of Agbor people. “Ika” is a name given by a renegade British Colonial Officer in 1936 to the vassals of Agbor kingdom, to spite the reigning king Agborbu of Agbor after an altercation. The name “Ika” was given to divide a once united people in the old Agbor Kingdom and whittle down the power and Majesty of their king.Ika is the name given to those vassal communities to create an identity for them different from Agbor. Ika was never meant to identify or describe the people of Agbor who already had a name and an indisputable identity.

Ika is the name given by a stranger and has no history or meaning in Agbor language and traditions.

No Agbor person alive was ever told by his parents that he is an “Ika” person. Ika is not a word with any meaning in our language or was it ever used in Agbor lore’s.

Anybody writing the history of our people and using the words “Ika History” is engaging in Fabrications and fraud. No place in that neighborhood was ever known as Ika before 1936, less than ninety years ago.

Agbor history goes far beyond 2700 BC and by implication beyond the present Dein dynasty. Dein dynasty since 1270 AD is the third dynasty in Agbor history and so far, the shortest.

Anybody involved in the promotion of “Ika” in Agbor is engaging in chicanery and deception for political gain. No Agbor person ever introduces himself as Ika. It is demeaning.

Our Local Government is named by the Nigerian Government as Ika South. We did not name the Local Government. We are Agbor people in Ika South Local Government Area. Nothing more.Agbor ni’Igidi oken ali.

It is normal. I'm from Anam in Anambra West LGA of Anambra State. Because we are riverine area dwellers, we refer to the Igbos from the hinterlands as Ndigbo. This does not in anyway suggest that we don't see ourselves as Igbos. We are very proud of our Igboness. I think this is habit that is common to all the riverine Igbos because, Similar habit is also common among the indigenes of Onitsha.
