1980 started off well, but by 1982, when the first oil price crash happened, things went downhill. Then Bubu came, and tried some austerity, did not work. IBB came, gave us SAP, no work.

The economy kept on getting worse and worse and worse. It got better between 1990-1 (Gulf war led to a rise in oil prices) then back to square one.

Increased domestic manufacturing. (We had some domestic manufacturing in the late 1980's, but not as much as we do now...plus Dangote then was an importer, not a manufacturer).

The poster did not tell us that minimum wage back then was less than 200 naira compared to 30 000 Naira now.

That man who bought 40 bags at once was a millionaire, most people built mud houses in the 80s.

Note: It's just an assumption, we don't know the actual worth of the individual, but I could remember my father always telling us when resumed his federal govt work he was transferred to portharcout and money was flowing, in less than a year he came back with #15,000,he had to give his elder brother 5k for keeps, completed his mother's house and was able to furnish his room with all necessary furniture as saving it in bank will bring about investigation as to how he got such amount of money. This happened in 1984/85...

Times were hard. I am not here to excuse Buhari's mismanagement, but having lived back then, times were hard. Very much so.

To have an idea of how bad times were, read Adiche's novel Americanah, especially the early chapters. You would get an idea of how bad times were then

Most people who were adults back then had side hustle to survive, most people joked about their take home salary not being able to take them home, most people could not afford phone (and when they could, it was for recieveing calls, not making calls.. and don't try making internaitonal calls...wahala go dey yer akant.), we were borrowing money even then, our hospitals were in a bad state, and I mean bad state (in 1993, one family friend lost their child in hosptial in part because the hospital did not have the equipment needed, plus fake drugs), and most people were struggling.

All the complaining we are doing now, was done back in 1989. All the crying we are doing now, was done back in 1989. The economy was bad then

Don't be deceived by that bag of cement story. 40 bags of cement was N1540. A normal salary of say a lecturer was around N2000-3000 . So if a lecturer tried to buy cement at that cost, he would have spent half his salary or her salary.

Times were hard back then. SAP was sapping us.
