I once declined a job offer because of accommodation issues at Lekki. I resumed the first day, when I got home I sent a mail to the HR that I can't continue with job.

The mainland job offer is your salary only and nothing more. but my first encounter on the island is the issue of accommodation, after spending the month of September with a so-called relative in Lakowe, Ajah she kicked me and my friend that we came for greener pasture on the island out of her house.

We approach the accommodation organization but they only rescued us with a house made of wood( these types of houses are common in Ajah environs close to the riverine area, in fact, st more than Sonora a mal single room on the mainland). we accepted the place this early October, but you see the mosquitoes in that environment eeeeehn, I know by the time I go for a medical check-up malaria in my body system will be something else.

For some days have not eaten good food, at times I eat once a day and at times I will just go to bed without food. my September salary has been used to settle backlogs of debt I acquired to sustain the month of September. now nothing is left.

I approached the organisation for a soft loan to hold body and soul together for the remainder of this month but it seems it is taking forever to be approved, though they helped during my first week of resumption and everything they borrowed me was deducted from the September salary. the transport fare from Lakowe to my place of work was very high. N400 every day as far. but where the organisation got us now is on the same street.

My look has changed deeds as a result of poor feeding. if I am to take the job offer on the mainland, the hunger wouldn't have been this much since I have family and friends over there.

I cannot go back to take the offer because it would have been taken up by another person even for the fact that they were begging me for the job. no money for feeding here again on the island and nobody to turn to and I am this shy type that doesn't like begging from strangers I pray I don't die of hunger here.

The staff i and my friend met on the ground here are not too friendly as they are grumbling that we are being paid higher than them, how do we approach them for this kind of situation?

I do come across people soliciting for funds here on nairaland just for feeding; that hunger shit is very real; you will be so hungry that even cow poo will look like Domino's Pizza. I am seeing myself now as a beggar with a job. I don't mind getting a loan even from my enemy till the month ending just to feed. I am not happy with myself for taking this decision.

please before you take up that job, think very well and weigh the short term and long term benefits and be fully prepared for the inconveniences that might come your way.

Cheer up n be a man. Life is all about risks, stop complaining n look for a solution. Also, remember that good things don't come that easy. Starting a new job most especially for someone that is not financially buoyant, is always full of challenges n struggles but as time goes on you will get out of this mess. I always advise people to take their annual leave, go n resume in the new Organization and get familiar with the environment n their processes, before taking final decision.

Anyway, whether your colleagues envy you or insult you, please swallow your pride and ask them for a loan. You can as well come out of your shell and be friends with them.

At least thank God you have a job, and it's almost ½ of the month already.

Another scope, you can make friends with those guys that sell rice, beans, garri and food stuffs.

Tell them you are new in your company, that you haven't been paid, but will be paid by month end, if its derica of rice, beans and garri each take on credit and be honest to pay back once you get your monthly salary.

You can also try these online loan apps. They can save you. Though I'm not a friend of borrowing, however, you have little or no choice.

thanks for the advice. i am yet to get gas stove for cooking here. the organization has a kitchen though but since i am new i find it awkward to start cooking in their kitchen

Very true, they even bite through really thick jeans. This your comment reminds me of my 100 level break when I went to Lagos and had to go sell right in front of Quilox, Omo, the mosquitoes were so danjalos, they bit me through my thick jeans. I have a very sensitive skin and I was always scratching my body, they left spots oooooo.

@magnumproperty, what's stopping you from going to work on the island from the mainland? You can't wake up at 5:00am and leave the house latest 5:30pm? I am trying to get your point here. You got a job with other perks and you are regretting you didn't get the other job that offers just basic salary? You honestly do not have a problem here. Not one problem. People live in Sango and they work on the island. Contact one of your mainland relative and move there oga.

For how long do you want to continue that kind of lifestyle? no wonder people don't live long in Lagos.

That's always my point. Don't start with money in mind. The money will come with experience. Don't choose because of high pay. Look at other benefits. When I took a lowly teaching job of 20k, everyone thought I was stupid. But the job gave me more time and freedom to amass different skills. And now, the 20k job is only history. Don't run after money like yahoo boiz and prostitutes.

Seems you haven't slept in an open place in Lekki before, the mosquitoes are over there are very dangerous, big and vengeful. The only way you can't feel mosquito problem there is if you sleep in an air-conditioned room.

All I see is poor decision making on your part, as you did not make unrealistic decision based on your salary.

The rent paid to get accommodation in Ajah would have been sufficient for you to get an averagely decent accommodation in Oworo/Bariga axis through collaboration. Besides, you transport fare would have been around 200 in the morning(you have to wake up as early as possible though).

Regarding your comment that staff are not friendly, you have to be careful as everybody is facing his/her own music. If you continue in that line, you will soon get sacked, and I want you to mark my words.

Where on the Island are we talking about here? I mean your office. Do you have relatives in Yaba, Fadeyi and it's environs or even Ikeja? Every organization has zero tolerance for lateness trust me. Not sure any organization has zero tolerance for lateness than banks and other financial institutions and people live in Iyana Ipaja axis and still resume before 8am.

Sad as it is, that's our reality in Lagos oooo. The traffic is the problem not even the distance because Lagos is small but that traffic is killing. A minute past a particular time you should live the house can lead to lateness.

Leave house 6am, return home 9/10pm due to traffic, instead getting a job at Ikeja or Ogudu or Gbagada etc ... The worse are those living at Ikorodu areas and working at VI

Some Nigerians are the cause of their problem must everybody lives in Lagos before you can make it in Nigeria. A person receiving the same amount in other states will still survive and manage that money if he or she knows what he/she is doing. Must everybody lives in Lagos??
