Albeit early, one of this season’s standout performers has been Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. The 22 year old Nigerian striker has drawn lots of attention recently as he has been banging in the goals for Napoli. With 7 goals and 2 assists already in his first seven games in all competitions, Osimhen has put himself in contention as an elite striker in world football.

Victor Osimhen signed for Napoli in July, 2020 after an outstanding season for Lille OSC in Ligue 1. At the time, the signing broke Napoli’s club-record transfer fee and made Osimhen the most expensive African transfer ever. Although, given his performances so far, the transfer fee could be seen as a bargain.

The Data
When looking at football data, I try to make initial observations on a player’s strengths and weaknesses as well as their playing style. The data cannot tell the whole story, but it gives me a good idea of which attributes are the strongest for any individual player. It can also provide some good insights on what to watch for when looking at game footage.

First, I have a radar plot of Osimhen’s percentile rank versus other forwards in Europe’s top five leagues: EPL, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1. The metrics that I am looking at are:

xG per 90 – expected goals per 90 minutes of play (what is xG?)
xA per 90 – expected assists per 90 minutes of play
Shot Touch % – amount of shots taken as a proportion of total touches of the ball
Pressure Regains per 90 – successful pressures per 90 minutes of play
Miscontrols + Dispossessions per 90 – amount of times player lost the ball per 90 minutes of play
Aerial Wins per 90 – aerial challenges won per 90 minutes of play
Successful Dribbles per 90 – successful dribbles per 90 minutes of play
xG/Shot – expected goal value per shot
Touches in Penalty Area per 90 – touches in attacking penalty area per 90 minutes of play
These metrics are the most relevant to the #9 position. We mostly judge a striker on goals and getting into the box, as well as chance creation, aerial ability, dribbling and pressing.

From the radar plot, we can see what type of striker Osimhen is. Being in the 86th and 99th percentile respectively for touches in the penalty area per 90 and shot touch % we can see that Osimhen shoots a lot and is often getting touches inside the penalty area. His expected goals per 90 is also among the best in Europe so he has a high probability of scoring nearly every game. Finally, he has pretty good chance creation (xA in the 59th percentile) and is a threat in the air (Aerial Wins in the 70th percentile).

Osimhen’s shot map looks great as well. He has the vast majority of his shots from inside the penalty area within the width of the 6 yard box. These types of shots are high quality and make for consistently good goal tally’s in the long term.

Using k-means clustering, I analyzed Victor Osimhen’s top 3 most frequent progressive pass reception clusters for the start of the 2021/22 season. A progressive pass is a pass that moves the ball 25% closer to the center of the opposition’s goal. This shows where on the pitch Osimhen receives the ball most during buildup and progression phases. The top cluster shows that the Nigerian receives the most progressive passes from the right side to the top of the penalty area.

What impresses me the most though, is that his next two most frequent clusters are nearly identical on opposite sides of the pitch. It shows that Osimhen moves around a lot and is comfortable showing on either side of the field. In addition, many of these passes are long balls, most likely played from the center back or full back, in behind the opposition’s defence.

Finally, we can analyze some of Osimhen’s recent territory maps. These are visualizations of where he is involved on the pitch based on his successful passing and touch locations. We can see that Osimhen covers a lot of the pitch.

Video Analysis
Napoli like to play direct to Osimhen and rely on his aerial ability and strength to maintain possession. In addition, Osimhen utilizes his great movement to make runs in behind opposition defenders. This combination of strength, pace and football intelligence on top of great finishing make him a very dangerous player.

Finishing – The Nigerian is a big threat in and around the box. He wins balls in the air and has top class finishing ability. This is the biggest reason that Osimhen could become a world class player, because at the end of the day the best strikers score the most goals. Osimhen will be looking to beat his tally of 10 goals in just 17.5 nineties from last season.

Hold up play -As a lone striker, Osimhen is often isolated up front against two center-halves and required to hold up the ball to allow his teammates to support him. Osimhen uses his body expertly to shield the ball from defenders and shows great awareness to link up the play.

Gaining Territory – Something that stood out to me while watching Victor Osimhen, is his ability to gain territory even in 1 v 3+ situations. Osimhen is not afraid to drive at defenders to advance the ball quickly up field and create shooting chances.

Runs in behind and out wide – As we saw with his progressive pass reception clusters, Osimhen likes to go out wide and run in behind the fullbacks to receive the ball. He uses his pace and power to beat defenders to the ball. This type of movement from a striker is impressive especially given that he still manages to get into the box so often as well.

Concluding Thoughts
Overall, Victor Osimhen is a very fun player to watch. His electric pace and will to drive at the defence is exciting and his finishing ability makes him a complete striker. His attributes and footballing intelligence make him an elite player and he could soon be world class. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching him play this season and hope he can continue his superb form.

The Nigerian has gained a lot of attention with his performances of late and could be set for a big season. Napoli currently sit top of the league with Osimhen as their top scorer. It is still early stages but what a moment it would be in the young man’s career to bring the Scudetto back to Napoli.

This is awesome!!!!!! Thanks man, I wasn't even born then.
Chai I remember the first goal scored by Okocha at the national stadium, orgasmic!!!!!! Westerhoff really tried, he brought Dan Amokachi, Uche Ukechukwu, Finidi George, alloy Agu, Ben Iroha into limelight after our then foreign based players failed to turn up for the afcon. That man was a legend!! In the 88 nations cup and after we used to parade foreign players majorly from Belgium and few African countries. This man took no crap from anyone and was ambitious!!!!

In the same vein bringing Akinkunmi Amoo, Samson Tijani, Kelechi Nwakali, Obina Nwobodo into the team
will solve our midfied issues within 45 minutes. Where was Amokachi when Westerhoof used him. He was still in Ranchers bees.
You dont wait for talent to explode in a major Euroean team before you use them.
He should just arrange a friendly and use them or even against these nonsense teams we are playing now.
Westerhofs model of using unkown talent before they are ripe works.
Rohr is simply getting it wrong.
African born talents cant get into European teams on time because they are not well advertised and they have
to be patient.
I remember George Finidi made an impression against Burundi within 45 minutes.
For example Chidera ejuke in the few matches he has played has allready made an impression.
Even Frank Onyeka is looking creditable.
Rohr just has to open his eyes and be a little free minded. He has to think outside the box

Oga mi, there was a team in Maroc 88 and another set of players executed the doomed WCQ for Italia 90, most if not all those guys didn't play in Algiers 90. No one is saying Rohr should travel the length and breadth of 9ja. All we are saying is, 1) be ambitious, don't sound defeated before u suffer the actual defeat. 2) be willing to try new players especially for known problem areas in the team.
And to be fair we have seen that work out in recent times, see Uzoho, Okoye and Kingsley. Someone introduced an unknown division 2 Leon Balogun at some point.

But wait what is the usefulness of Yobo as a coach in this team so all this pundit work he has been doing he still don't understand the basics of football and essence of having a robust midfield

U see why i dont rare all this Rio,scholes,G. neville etc pundits give them an opportunity to coach and watch them fumble

I expect Yobo to make a difference in Rohr decision style at least just like Salisu was
