It irks me to realize my weak carpenter grandfather in the village who buys trees and turns them into logs, then to chairs used for public schools will have to be paying taxes...after he pays taxes indirectly by buying the trees, transporting himself, buying machines, buying fuel, paying rents, and feeding.

In another news, after Ndubuisi gets a car for Uber on hire-purchase, after he pays taxes buying fuel, buying tickets, bribing soldiers and policemen on the road, evading accidents, and dodging more portholes than roads...he will still have to pay the extra taxes for bearing the appellation of being a taxi driver. However, those having about fifty cars for entourage alone are called senior citizens.

In saner climes, the rich understand that he pays more taxes because of more assets. In Nigeria, the rich rejoices that the poor augments their assets with their taxes.

Welcome to a country that releases budgets every year but doesn't balance accounts after the financial year.

Welcome to the Fraudral Republic of Nigeria.

It should not irk you my dear. If he is making profits over the annual tax free income in Nigeria, then he should be paying tax. Thats how its done all over the world. Its only in Nigeria where only working class people pay tax whereas most of the wealth is in the hands of self employed entrepreneurs and contractors.

…forgetting that…
Oh I did not forget, how taxes are applied is key, there will be a child tax, yes, for every child you have you will be taxed, that should take care of the overpopulation issue.
A fuel tax is also in order, to get those pesky motorists off the road and into busses.
abbey621:

How is it enforced?

Poorly, there’s nothing preventing a millionaire from saying he earns N100,000 a year and paying 5%. But only if he operate an unregistered business. Registered businesses typically have corporate accounts from which tax can be automatically deducted. But outside of that there’s no one to control whether you pay taxes or not, but that will change.

Part of what the BVN is meant to address is illegal activity, ideally anyone earning money on a regular basis has to have a registered business or formal employment, transacting business without registering is illegal. Once all measures are in place it will be possible to audit a person’s bank account(s) and associated information to effectively decide how much they owe. Soft measures like freezing a suspected account can then be used.

And even if someone dashes you money, guess what? You still owe taxes.

What exactly did they pull off? When we compare Obasanjo's administration to Jonathan's we can see the failure and suffering. Same way we compare Jonathan's to Buhari's. Borrowing has been increasing so has suffering, it is a culmulative effect of bad leadership.

All The loans Jonathan plus obasanjo took is not up to what Buhari took under 6 years

We didn’t become world capital of poverty during those administration, we did under Buhari. How many recessions did all of them have? How many Buhari get so far? Inflation has never been this bad. Debt/loan all time high. Corruption all time high…..Insecurity has never been this bad. More than half of the population are living under poverty everything under Buhari, only a slave will compare this with other administration

Do you understand the meaning of culmulative effect? Country owes 10,000 Naira, government borrowed additional 10,000 at 20% interest per annum, it continues to borrow at rising interest rates each year with each president, just because the current administration borrowed at the highest interest rate or owes the highest debt does not mean the disaster started with it. The effect is a combination of past and present failures, I'm not sure you understand simple economic comncepts but I have tried my best to explain it to you in simple terms, remove the sentiments and be objective, all of dem are responsible for the current calamity!

He is not the first president, why didn’t other administration borrow as much as he did? And he is still taxing that high, how come he was able to borrow as much as what others did in 16 years in just under 6 years? And he’s still borrowing.
Why didn’t Jonathan also borrow nonchalantly?
Why is everything so difficult under him?
You can’t defend failure abeg, we know your type.

Average Nigerian are paying taxes, from making call , sending messages, food we eat and transport, even beer now is cost coz of tax angry
Most of these so called politicians evade taxes and living a luxury life but want the masses to keep suffering upon suffering undecided

You know my type? You obviously have a problem with comprehension and your attack first sentimental attitude rather than civil discourse means you're just wasting my time. Go back and read what I wrote, Nigeria did not spoil in one year or under one administration, it is a culmulative effect, if Jonathan performed well, we wouldn't have Buhari, if Obasanjo did the right things, Jonathan wouldn't have had the chance to become so corrupt and Buhari would have never become common LG chairman not to tlak of president. I will not repeat myself again, feel free to argue with your phone....PEACE!

Would the country owe 100,000 without the initial 10,000 and high interest rate? Would it owe 100,000 if the 10,000 was used to make profit and service the debt rather than wasted? All it takes is one administartion to fix the refineries, focus on exports more than imports and take security seriously, all it takes are these little adjustments to set us back on the right course, don't play the sentimental bullshit card with me, if you don't know what to type keep your damn mouth shut!

Your questions are very valid but there are logical reasons why the debt accumulation during this administration is much higher.

1. Increased population
2. GEJ increased the minimum wage when oil prices were over 100 dollars per barrel.
3. The average age of Cars in Abuja and lagos has reduced. Nigerians go for flashier cars.
4. Same goes for the cost of housing
5. Even the poor want iPhones now.
6. The level of insecurity as a result of no investment in public education has led to increased military spending.
7. The global pandemic.
8. Lower average cost of crude oil.
9. Inflation in the US has led to the fall in value of the dollar against major currencies, so 70 dollars per barrel in 2007 can not get you the same quantity of goods as 70 dollars per barrel in 2021.

With regards to the main topic, our leaders are illiterates. Resource rich countries focus on taxing property and vehicles. They also have higher than average sales taxes with low income taxes. This is because resource rich societies then to be prone to income inequality as we presently have in Nigeria.

Tax does not always equal “making a lot of money”

Their taxes will be on profit; question is how much profit do they make after overheads and personal tax allowance.

The main question here is what does the government do for them to deserve the tax they want to collect! The taxi driver pays a tax daily to touts / VIO/ police who harass them and an even bigger tax from the effect of bad roads on his car!
Anyway, this is the end product of a congress of baboons
