BMW is a more complex car to fix.
You must buy a very expensive car reader to fully diagnose the car.
Parts are expensive
As they age, they gulp money , that is why most owners drop them , same goes for Audi and many other luxurious brands

Its the Nigerian mentality jare.... When we are used to something we don't want to consider the alternative, hence demand affects the price .

I drove a BMX 3 series when I was in the university, and I must say the maintenance was literally very okay for me as a student with no other side hustle.

Using one for 8 years now and still counting. When you change a particular part, you might not change again after years of usage. I only changed my break parts ones, the automatic gearbox is still in its top condition, engine superb. Unlike Japanese that you'll have to change most parts weekly or monthly.

I use mine mostly for my long journeys. By month end, I'll leave Owerri to Benin then Abuja, Jos, kaduna, Kano and back to Owerri. I do this with my BM ones in two to three months. But 8 years ago, mechanics and friends warned me not to buy this Car. Most of them have spent more in fixing their Cars while others have changed their Cars severally within this period.
Oga which brand of BMW did you use for 8 years....am waiting.

Two people condemn BMWs

Those that can't afford it

Those that can't fix it.

If u have d passion go for it, one of d advantages of these rare vehicles is, u can be guaranteed authentic spare parts which lasts years as opposed to Japonica cars dat are wash with fake chinco parts dat needs replacement in few months

Don't ever say German cars are not rugged.
That's a blasphemy. Although BMW and benz are German cars but not the same company. That being said, there's a reason why there are still many W123s,124(known as v-boot), the 190e are still seen on the roads today. These cars are over 30 years old! They were built to outlast their owners lol.

most German cars are complex for our mechanics to understand when compared to the Japanese counterparts,so its easier to fix an accord or corolla or civic or Camry than a Benz or bimmer to an average mechanic in Nigeria, then secondly the electrical set up of most German cars is also a pain in the a*s to our rewires here, like I've always said,I won't drive Japanese car if I'm outside Nigeria, but to save myself the stress I will pick the jap mobile when I de naija,so in summary no be say German cars no make sense o,just that our environment no favor dem..lol
what part of the environment nor favour them?

Why should mechanics now lie that their parts are expensive or that they break down easily..

Can I go for a BMW as my next car then?

Aren't bimmers strong and rugged?
oga you are not get it at all, is just a simple thing, if any of your Japanese car developers hub issues just pick up ur phone and call a mechanic in the next few minutes ur car will be fixed, even ur wife might not know ur car has that kind of issue but if the same hub issues had happened to ur BMW or benz the entire community and ur village people will know about it because it might take u months or a year to get the hub, and buying it is another thing, but the advantages is that once u change the hub it gonna last for years but Japanese cars might have gone through the same problem two to three times a year,
That 2014 bmw for 1.4m when the engine or gearbox spoils u will need 2.5m to buy the engine or 1.5m for the gearbox

Wrong and you think the Jap cars do not require complex machines? Look the up to date mechanics are not cheap, the road side ones are, however they will soon be faced out like radio mechanics we have in the 80s if they refuse to upgrade and update their tools. You see all these new garages popping up, they are the future, these days if you own any car from 2014 upwards, never allow anyone touch it if they do not have a scanner that can read and program cos from the way its going ordinary change of battery requires programming and even change of injectors requires coding

Most people who complain weren't really in the financial bracket of people eligible to drive a luxury brand.

Finally, kindly stick to what your finances can cater for.

It's not being able to afford it bro. It's about professional mechanics that can fix them, when you have to wait for like a month to import the parts, cuz they're not available here.

Where you get that one that German cars are not rugged ? Especially Benz? I have used Toyota , Honda, nissan and Benz...my 1998 E240 just dey as if they never use am at almost 220000 odometer, for long rugged distance na my only hope especially Calabar to awka , the other brands are sissy compared to the beast, just buy the original parts and do proper maintenance and it is pure delight . The problem with these Japanese is that the parts are low quality and mostly fake that's why they are cheaper but they don't last ,go to any mechanic workshop ,na Toyota full there .
vertueptime:
The have complex electronic and electrical systems,
they are not Rugged,
enter one big pothole light don off for dashboard,
they are low profile with expensive low profile tyres that are not ment for Nigerian roads,

Need Special mechanics and elctrictians
Cost of parts are outrageous,na big man car,
Fuel consumption.
If it breaks down on the road it will take the grace of God before you can even push it to the shoulder,

Guy it's simple .

German engineers are better than Japanese engineers don't get it twisted. And their products are better. A BMW is definitely better than a camry.

The problem is that they are too precise. They design cars to be operated under certain very specific conditions. If you use the car as stated in the manual, the car will last for years. Once you deviate anything, if you use the wrong oil, wrong roads, the car will breakdown. That's the precise nature of Germans.

I read a news article about a customer that complained to a filter manufacturing company that their filter was defective. They investigated the water that the customer was filtering and found out it contained 2% KMnO4, instead of the 1% that was specified in the manual. They laughed the customer out of the building.

Japanese engineers on the other hand know that their customers are coconut head grin . Maybe because they are trying to gain dominance, but they are more likely to think about how the customer will use the product.

That's why for this UAR, Japanese cars are better.

Anyways...

A neighbour then, who happens to be a pastor was gifted a a Nigerian used BMW, his life changed .. he goes late to church, comes home late. On several occasions the car sleeps on the road...it came to a point people were praying that he should be delivered of the car...
The only truth here is that we aren't matured for BMW. BMW is a machine meant for the rich and advanced country where their service centers are rampart

cheesy cheesy

Two major points I take from this thread.
1. Run away from Nigeria used cars. Too much lies and damages that even experienced mechanics would not detect on inspection
2. Let your usual routes and the roads you normally ply determines the car you buy. I drove my Lexus IS to Sagamu just like week. I just parked the car and moved around the city on Okada. Ogun state is cursed with horrible roads.
3. Finally, peace of mind above everything else and this is what comes with most of japanese cars. Too many trial by errors mechanics full Nigeria cities.

It's your choice: Luxury or peace of mind

Honestly, threads like these should appear more on NL front page rather than news about BBN, Tonto, Tiwa or Toke and their assssesss and booooobs!

This thread has really educated me more on cars and I can't thank you all enough for the lessons..

Now wonder, I just slightly mentioned I wanted to sell my Toyota and within a week, I had so many offers and I ended up not selling because an auto guy told me it's still in good shape despite using it for 3 years.. ( me wey I no dey take car maintenance play)

My take away from this thread is not to buy a German car because of their intricate wiring and transmission.
