Maybe you should reread my post to grasp the crux of my comment. Since the Op is feeling conflicted about emigrating to Germany on account of the economic status (either real or imagined) of others that are either there presently or once lived there, then maybe he needs to reevaluate his purpose for going abroad, lest he ends up disappointed.

The best that any foreign country can offer an immigrant are better economic opportunities. But even with that, such countries are bound to present their own unique challenges. Therefore, intended immigrants should 'shine their eyes' and manage their expectations so that they don't end up disappointed. Comprende??
The watch word is EQUALL OPPORTUNITY, does that exist in GERMANY
I once asked a guy here to tell me how many Nigerians he knows who are Police, Navy,Aair force, Immigration officers or Prison officers in Germany and France, up till date we are waiting still

Does ur friend have legal papers? If no, it's better he comes back. My kid bro is in Berlin, govt gave him and his family a 3 bedroom apartment, they pay his kids child benefits and even when he's not working like during covid 19 lockdown, govt still take care of them to an extent. You must be ready to hustle for u to make headway. No food for lazy person for Germany.

Rich Germans buy houses and move to cheaper european countries. That country is expensive abeg. Its expensive to call on phone. You have to manage WhatsApp, skype etc calls cheesy
If you can do their apprenticeship or get a qualification, it will be nice for you. They value their qualification. Look for a good skill and get training.
Solar is the future.

I have not been there oo. Na person tell me.

Vacations aren't a big deal in Europe. You can travel to 3 different countries for vacay on less than 150 pounds, which evidently is affordable for a minimum wage earner. Visa isn't required for travel and air ticket is ridiculously cheap.
U sure say you nor fit do 5 days with 150? lol if you stay in them back pack places or camp sites grin grin grin

Most people that do not make it abroad usually go there through illegal means. Hence, their papers are not legit which in turn make them do all sought of cheap labour to survive.

My cousin in the UK told me that their are Nigerians like that in the UK that do some heavy factory jobs in the UK (£6 per hour) well below the minimum wage. Their employers knows this and they just exploit them.

My advice for you is to travel legally and you will enjoy anywhere you travel to in the world.

Re: Life In Germany: What Is It Like For Nigerians Who Migrated? by Greenerie(f): 4:09pm On Oct 27, 2021
This is the simple truth. Before you embark on a life changing journey, you must fast and pray for 14 days until u receive ur answer. You must know if ur destiny is outside country. Many travelled out and they are suffering, after many years of struggle and hardship with nothing to show for it,regretting terribly their decision.

Pray to ur Creator and find out If ur destiny is outside shores..If ur destiny is not there, and you travel,u will go there and suffer.

OBUKOMENA:
Good evening nairalanders! I hope you had a good day?

So, let me just go straight to my reason for opening this thread, and I hope I would be able to convey my thoughts impeccably:

It seems like some of our people who travelled to Germany aren't doing so well after all (I stand to be corrected, though!)
I have a friend over there whom I am preparing to go meet. This guy has been there since 2017. He hardly calls me on normal call. He would rather call on WhatsApp. Reason being so that he could get in touch cheaply. The first and only time I asked him to send me something, he told me pointblank he didn't have.
Just this afternoon, I heard a colleague's father just came back to Nigeria from there after 21 solid years! He had abandoned his wife and children here in Nigeria. If he was doing so well over there, would he not have arranged for his family to come over and stay with him - at least?

I have been worried, even before I heard this colleague's father thing: I don't know what I am going to meet at the friend's place; I don't know what life is like over there - how to cope in a non-English speaking environment. I don't know how long it's going to take me to make it over there and reconnect with my family. This news about my colleague's dad also increased my worries.

So, I decided I would come on here to ask: Aren't these red flags as regards traveling over there, especially with the hope that when i get there, after 2-3 years, I would bring in my family.
Anyone here knows about life in Germany?
Why should he make very expensive mobile calls when he has an option to use free whatsapp calls which are even much clearer?

If Europe is good why are Nigerians with legal papers doing fraud and stealing? Why can't they work and make legitimate income?
Why are most Nigerians languishing in various prisons for crimes across Europe if those countries are greener in pastures?

TimeTraveller:
Take it from someone who lives abroad (real abroad o!). If you have a vision for your life, it may die abroad. You may end up in a small apartment with electricity, cheap Coca Cola and fatty burgers. You may get married and have kids. Soon, you will start consoling yourself with the lie that you did it for your children. The truth is, you sacrificed your dreams. Before you know it, you are 50 and the thought of coming back to Naija with nothing to fall back on haunts you. Even your friends would have moved on, some of them significantly better than you. So, to save face, you stay back. Out of frustration, you insult Nigeria from abroad and say she will never be well, but deep down, you know it's frustration.

If you have a steady income that is reasonable, seek ways to build extra sources of income. Choose a quiet place to live and enjoy your life.

I am not saying you shouldn't travel o! But the abroad of the late 80s and early 90s that our uncles went to doesn't exist again.

Make e be like dat.

Na LIE

If you are coming as illegal immigrant, better stay back in Nigeria otherwise you will regret coming here. Germany is difficult for those with legal papers not to talk of someone with no working permit.

The metrics you are using to judge your friend are useless.

Here, you have a prepaid or contract SIM and/phone. You can call every other German and/or EU mobile number. So, you want him to still call you on your MTN? when WhatsApp is available? Why haven't you called him?

He didnt send you what (money) you asked for? at least he is not the one asking,,, so, he is doing better.
Ask him how much he pays per month (rent, energy, internet, heating, water, phone/recharge, transport/packing space etc) undecided

I do not know how he came here. but if he has a German degree or completed a good technical training (Ausbildung), and uses his head, i dont see why he wouldn't be fine.

Say what you know! It still shocks me that a typical Nigerian (especially a BMC) would adjudge taxation evil. No, Sir! Germany and a lot of these first world nations are self-sufficient because taxes are put to good use. They even have enough to loan your lifeless President.

But no, Nigerians want to enjoy the good things of life, or the lack thereof, without paying taxes.

Tax in Germany is very high. True.
Germany has the biggest economy in the whole of Europe. True also.

Foreign students/nationals don't get good paying jobs in Germany? Very false. I personally know at least 5 Nigerians who are doing fine in Germany. A couple of them are close to me. One even got the job as a banker while in Nigeria, and he wasn't speaking German while here, neither was it a requirement. There are Nigerians already there who help their HR recruit from skilled Nigerians by referrals.
Now, aside, Canada, UK, US, Australia, how many 1st world countries are English speaking countries? Does that mean that anyone not going to these few English speaking countries are not doing fine?
Even UAE, you will be astonished to know how much you can earn as a professional...professional not odd job workers. And yet English is not even UAE official language.

I doubt if anyone abroad will want to call you on a Normal phone call because honestly that's expensive . So I don't see any fuss about it... And maybe your friend actually don't have what you asked for . You probably don't know if he had some bills to pay etc

You just address some of the real truth why majority can't send stuff home the way our families are demanding.

I just paid my monthly rent this morning $1200 for a one bedroom apartment and other bills are still there like energy, phone,cable/internet, insurance both for rent and car,the list are endless,am not even living in a high-end area close to downtown or reserved area,NO.
How do you think I will want to send money without first taking care of those, thats even the fact that am here Legally with a 6 digits income, considering some that are here in hiding doing menial jobs.
How do you want them to send anything when infact they can't afford it.
Its hard out here bro but if you know what you want and what you're doing the opportunity is endless too.

As per calling, there are alot of third party call card you can use that aren't too expensive, I do that alot and some phone providers allows for some credits of 100 to 1000 mins calls e.g lyca mobile and others too.
But its still expensive for some like you said but not all.
