Two Weeks After It Blew, an Oil Well in Nigeria Is Still Spewing

An oil and gas well in southern Nigeria is still spewing its contents at least 14 days after it first blew, causing growing anxiety among the local communities that rely on the surrounding land and waterways.

The world’s oil and gas markets have been all but unaffected by the incident because the well in question had been capped and wasn’t producing. But community leaders are increasingly worried about its impact on people’s livelihoods.

A not-much-reported, 2-week-old oil spill in Nigeria reminds us of what is an ongoing problem in the country. The footage, shot earlier this week, was sent to us by a local community leader. It's still leaking.

Aiteo acquired the license from a consortium of oil majors headed by Royal Dutch Shell Plc in 2015. The sale price of $2.4 billion for the permit and a pipeline is the largest paid so far by Nigerian companies acquiring assets from their international counterparts. Spills, particularly from pipelines, are common in Africa’s largest oil producer.

Experts are now ready to start the work of sealing the well so that the cause and scale of the leak can be determined, Idris Musa, director general of Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detection and Reponse Agency, said by text message. A spokesman for Aiteo declined to comment.

Stop spreading falsehood. You see those war canoes on display, in the olden days, they were normally filled to the brim with slaves (mostly ibos) for one to earn a chieftaincy title.

Everywhere na una get am. Claim relationship.

shocked

Bayelsa state is supposed to be one of the most developed states in the country owing to the hooge crude oil and gas deposits and small size of the state.
But the reverse is the case.

Oyel money is being used to rehabilitate and re-integrate repentant Boko Haram terrorists in far away Mallam Sidi, Gombe over 1000 KM away from Bayelsa.

The HydroCarbon Pollution and Remediation Project is still a scam.
Ogoni people are groaning from the massive spillage that has rocked communities and it is part of the reason Saro Wiwa was hanged by Abacha.

The Niger Delta people still have a share of the blame.
The NDDC is one of the most corrupt agency in Nigeria. From massive embezzlement and execution of sub-standard projects in Niger Delta, it has failed it's own people.

They are Igbos , Nembe people speaks Igbo dialects and bear mostly Igbo names.

Igbos are never slaves in waterline area’s of Niger Delta rather the reverse is the case.

Most Niger Delta indignees do not know the consequences of hydrocarbon pollution on the environment.14days pollution might take several years to curb. By the time the world is done with crude oil ,Niger Delta will still be battling with the consequences of pollution.
