I don't even understand. Like why is such a topic even up for debate?

Are we talking about the same kids with Down syndrome that I have never seen or heard people except their immediate family say good things about? The same kids who get regularly mocked and insulted by people they are far older than.

It's been 15 years at least but I still remember a roughly 20-year old boy with this condition being mocked by a boy of 5-7 years. The Down syndrome boy chased the little boy home to report his misdeeds to his parents. It was sad asf.

Why are we debating this please? If you feel you can't abort a kid with Down syndrome that's okay. Just be aware of the lifelong cross you are carrying.
And be very aware that the kid will need care all their life and be passed on to one of your other kids or relatives to take care of. And be aware that the said relatives or siblings might not share the love you have for your kid with Down syndrome and might physically, sexually and emotionally assault them.

I've come in contact with quite a few kids with Down syndrome and they can be really cute and seem reasonably happy. But they didn't sign up to the never-ending degradation and oppression that almost everyone they meet subjects them to.
I don't feel it's fair for them to make them go through such pain and suffering when they could have just been aborted.

Today you have seen two people say good things about people with down syndrome. You and I.

The topic must be open to debate. I find it very annoying that some people here think that their lives are more meaningful than the lives of a disabled person. What will these people do with their children if they acquire a disability by accident? Kill them? This is Nazi philosophy and inhumane.

You have no right to complain about the Nigerian society if you think that these kids have no right to be born.

And by the way, if you are worried about hardship and suffering then don't have kids at all because they will inevitably suffer and have to endure hardships. That is part of the human experience. Ironically, the people with down syndrome tend to have a more positive outlook on life than the average person.

Two people out of how many?

I didn't say disabled people shouldn't be born. Their parents should just know what they are signing up for.

Two people out of how many?

It doesn't make any difference because whether a child has a disability or not, you didn't have them so that people would pat you on the back.

I didn't say disabled people shouldn't be born. Their parents should just know what they are signing up for.

I think they know better than anyone else.

How do you know you would despise this child?

I was always saying that I can't bring a child with down syndrome to this world. When I was pregnant, I did the test to check if the child had the syndrome. You can't take the test until after the first trimester or until the end of the first trimester (I don't remember exactly). It was only then that I realized that it is easy to say such things before your child has been conceived. When I was waiting on the result, I realized that I can't abort my child no matter what.

By the time the test is done, your baby looks like a baby, with arms, legs, a heart and everything else. It's still very small but it looks human and it's yours.

This is true.

I know a woman who has three kids with down syndrome. Their age mates usually make fun of them. The eldest one is always looking sad.

We all sound as though here in Nigeria people do all necessary test when pregnant. How many parents even do these test or can afford to ? Those who have children with disability.often times didn't find out until after birth .
I'm sure if most if these parents were given the choice at about say trimester , they will abort it.
Having said that , I do not judge a parent who choose to abort neither do I praise the one who decide to have them . Our capacity and tolerance level differs and our ability to fight off social stigmatization differs too.
But I do believe that people with down syndrome are humans and shouldn't be treated less of a person . But this is Nigerian , we are the most religious and get we are hypocrite. We criticize whatever we don't understand and we We do not understand humanity and that the world is for all

We had a disabled boy in the neighborhood when I was growing up. We knew better than to ridicule him. Guess why!

And some parents are the one doing the taunting. They feel these kids are a disappointment are ashamed to be seen with them in public. Some intentionally mistreat them sef.

You were raised well. The boy was very lucky to have you and others like you around. But the fact remains that if you are disabled in this country there's like a 98% chance of you being endlessly discriminated against and mocked because of your disability. And I mean ENDLESSLY.

The parents are probably carrying a gene that makes them extra susceptible to having such kids. That's sad.

And you are cute wink

It’s because they are highly overpopulated and it’s part of their population control.

But what are the causes of Down syndrome in a child? This should be rather addressed.

And you know a funny thing, it’s the people who are deeply against abortion and women’s right to choose that will be the first to abort a fetus with Down syndrome. That’s why I read all the hypocritical and religious garbage they spew here daily and shake my head

@OP would I abort a fetus with Down syndrome?
No. The answer is no. After a baby is born, if they have the syndrome it doesn’t mean they can’t have a relatively normal life. If you have resources to improve their lives based on that disability, they can even have as much a normal life as someone without the syndrome. And to think of it, I would love him/her as much as I love my other children.

I’m an advocate for women’s right to choose or not choose abortion in situations that being pregnant or becoming a parent would be detrimental to their wellbeing. But if someone wanted to be pregnant, planned for it and does in fact get pregnant as they wished to, they really can’t say that pregnancy affects their wellbeing negatively just because the baby has Down syndrome. Unless it’s a high risk pregnancy, it can’t really be used as an excuse.

I’m sure everyone knows that Lady in the first picture below. Popular from American horror stories.

I could go on.
But Down’s syndrome like many other disabilities and ailments is no longer a life-ending diagnosis. One can live a full productive life if they are loved and supported.

We have an inherent need to stigmatize anything out of the ordinary amongst us. And that’s what we must unlearn. Thanks for the topic OP

It's like you have read my mind dearest.

I was already wondering why the loudest anti-abortion activists on this forum stayed away from this thread. Seriously. undecided
