It can't be proved because education hadn't gained enough grounds in Africa at the time most of them were born. If you go to some villages, you'd see very old men and women still walking unaided.

Even my dad that was born in a village in Ogun state didnt know his date of birth. He just chose a random day and month and used 2 different years 1938/1942 depending on what he was providing the DOB for.

I think be arrived at the years based on stories of events he was told happened around the time he was born.
