@Marxxx, I hope you are doing fine!

Please I need your opinion on this.

How important is high GMAT score (750+) with a higher percentage in Quant in McKinsey recruitment process (resume screening stage and offer decision) for a non-MBA candidate-BA role?

Marxxx:
I trust the test was good. Success

Hello Marxxx, trust you are doing good!

I am a fresh graduate just about to complete my service year. I have been very passionate about working for a consulting firm (Mckinsey most hopefully) right out of school.
My only hindrance at the moment is that i graduated with a 2'2. While I understand that I can join as an experienced hire some 2-3 years to come, I really really need to join straight out of school.
Please how can I go about getting an invite despite graduating with a 2'2? I really believe I will ace the PST exams and I'm only hoping to get invited for the test as I believe I will take it up from there!
Any help please?

I'm not yet in McKinsey but I think with the little research and experiences I have had with them, I can confidently tell you that your chance of passing through the CV screening stage with a second class lower in undergraduate degree, and working with them right after college is nearly impossible. Except otherwise you have a solid explanation and can largely substantiate it with a lot of reasons why you have had a 2'2. A reason like you worked and studied full time simultaneosly while in college??

See the firm value an excellent academic background couple with a strong leadership experience. So I'll advise you work towards breaking into the firm as an experience hire..

I didn't have the best undergrad days. My academic performance was greatly affected by some serious personal/family problems.
I might be able to explain this further to them, but since I just sent my application few days ago, I barely know how to go about it. Guess I am just asking for a chance to get past the cv screening stage and get invited to the PST... Looking for a helpful network, recommendation or suggestion at least.

You know that bolded part really crack me up a little grin. That you called "just" is pretty an hardwork. I am looking for a referrer myself so as to make the process faster and get invited for pst (as I have a lot of confidence of acing it). But then consultants in MBB are highly cautious of who they refer and so hardly refer a candidate without knowing one ability so well. So our sure belt now is to rely on our academic background, skills set/experience, persistent with networking (with the hope that the hustle will pay off one day) and prayer/patience cheesy

You are trying to get to the PST stage too? So, you don't meet the 'official' minimum requirement? Issit poor grades too? Or am I missing something?

I am trying to tell you that Despite being graduated on top 5% in my class, getting into the firm is not a child play and not for the fainthearted. That I am still looking for an insider to fast track the process for me. You need to know that there are candidates with first class from top foreign universities competing for the few available spots. And mind you these same candidates are also applying with referrals from the firm. So my point is even with top grade (first class/second class upper(4+)), one is not still guarantee an automatic invitation for PST. Most Especially during this difficult time when most firms are putting their recruitment process hold.

Oh, I get the harsh reality you're driving at right now. I must confess I witnessed something similar when enquiring from them on the YLP programme.

So, other than LinkedIn, where can one meet MBBs consultants and all? Any target conference or gathering?

You can submit your CV here as McKinsey Africa will be holding a virtual event in December 3&4. There is an opportunity to network with consultants if invited for the conference

Please sir, I'm a final year student and I've been thoroughly researching on how to break into the big 4 accounting firms and also into notable firms like mckinsey.

Please if you don't mind, I'll like to get your WhatsApp number to ask some questions and get materials from you.

Will appreciate your reply sir

Ahah, interesting question. Well, the life of a consultant is very interesting but there is also a lot of boring work. You will have to fill out reports and over time it starts to get bored ... Nevertheless, this is quite an interesting and multifaceted work and it is based on psychology and communication with people. I can tell you with confidence that you will not be able to work as a consultant if you do not have communication skills ... I understood this after studying courses from Devenir consultant. This is the best course I have bought and there is really a lot of useful information about consulting and it can help you become an expert in this field ...

@Scholar94 how far your MBB journey? Have you joined any yet? I'm looking to get more information about BCG in particular.

Evening bro/sis. No. I'm not with any of them. I'm with one of the big 4. On BCG matter, we can speak outside here. DM.

Hi Sadiq, trust you’re great. One time you said there is no timeline to applying for the big four like long and pwc. So would you advise someone who is two months into service (passing out in September this year) to begin application now?

Thanks as I await your response

wow...2/60...wow...I appreciate your sincerity unlike people who will persuade you for a referral and you do that only for such people to disappoint during interviews. I think perhaps you should try out other sectors and try to tailor your skills to what interest you most...Consulting is not trial, trial practice practice thing...even if you scale through during case interview, your interviewer MUST ask you questions that requires mental computing...and you must answer correctly and use the solution to answer further questions...figure out what you want first...

Hi Mr marxxx,

Trust you’re well. Really happy you came online, just saw your last seen to be august. I’ve been coming to this thread for God knows how long now 😅

I was scared before because I saw you once mentioned you had health challenge I think. Thank goodness you are fine…..

I’ve been wanting to ask question regarding McKinsey.

Can I send a PM through Nairaland🙏🙏

Thank you

Hoping you see this soon. I hope it doesn’t take ages before you login. Fingers crossed 🤞
