For those with experience using budget PWM controllers

I had a setup with 24v panel and 12v battery with a 30A pwm controller.

It was working properly but I read charging would be faster from here if everything matches so I got a 24v inverter and 24v battery.

Normally the arrow on the controller blinks but now in the morning the panel icon comes up and the arrow just stays steady and the battery voltage barely increases all day.

The controller has 12/24v so I'm confused. Has anybody experienced this?

(ps. I know I should upgrade to mppt and would do that when I get funds or an mppt fan dashes me grin

Send the Specs sheet at the back of the panels....

With this specs if your batteries barely charge, then your Panel is 150w in disguise cheesy

Your PWM should be Auto Voltage detect that is it will switch to 24V when you connect 24v batteries, if not check your battery voltage is on 24V...

Disconnect everything, Connect Batteries only first, set to 24V then connect Panels last then observe again....

And during your observations was there load on the Batteries, if yes disconnect all load then charge battery without load

I've tried this, same thing.

I'm just reading the controller's spec sheet now.

It has 12/24v lead acid auto
3 string Lithium
4 string LiFePo4

The battery is Lithium so I think it only does the auto switching for Lead acid batteries and does not support 24v for Lithium .

I'd revert the connection to 12v and plan towards the MPPT.

Thanks so much!

This is a 60cell panel, it can't charge a 24v systems properly, To charge 24v system, u need a 72cell panel connected to a PWM CC or two 60cells in series connected to mppt.

Wahala.

It's to go back to my 12v that was working o!

Or use my external charger as my setup can last me a week fully charged.
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by olopan(m): 10:29am On Dec 29, 2021
Since your battery is 24V lithium, that is what your charge controller sees, and your battery also being 3s or 4s at 12V (x2) for a 24V system

The main thing i see here is your solar panels, it is observed that panels with Trina solar slapped on them from Alaba, there is a 50/50 chance it is

1. Used panel sent over from abroad

2. It has dropped its power due to long time in service or as Dam5reey as said it is a 12V panel falsely labelled as 24V

In short there is no potential flow of power from your panels down to battery,

Try and series your panels together to achieve higher voltage as that should be able to charge your battery ... 50V or higher I guess is the Voc of your Controller so two in series should work with no problem

Lol, even Ur working 12v is performing at half its capacity. PWM will cut Ur voltage by half to charge Ur setup. The remaining half wasted!

Based on your 100Ah battery and needs

2 x 150w panel - 40k x 2
100Ah - 65k
30A controller - 15k
1000W inverter MSW - 32k
Aluminium roof profile- 12k
Battery box/rack - 8k
Electrical components - 30k
Installation materials - 12k
Workmanship -30k

Excluding transport

All above is to match what your installer might give to you but you can get lower if you buy couple of these things yourself

I do charge my small LiFeO4 24volt with pwm charge controller just edit the cutoff voltage to 29.2volt or 29.4volt if lithium ion battery of 7s. Also it might be that your panels is not delivering up to 30v and above so it’s either over rated panels or poor installation.

It's bringing out over 30v when I test.

I just did what you said,

Set it on b1 (only b1 is going up to 29v),

Then set the 1st 3 values to 29.2v, 24v and 20v (they were at 14v - 10v thereabouts)
I'd let you know in the morning if it charges.

I remember the arrow usually stays without blinking on the 12v setup when battery is already full and there's still sun.

Note that you can’t exceed 45-50v mark of the charge controller. What is the wattage of your panels, open circuit voltage, maximum voltage.

It still shows the solid arrow from the panel

Also I'm getting 35.5v from the panels right now.

Hopefully it should start charging/blinking when the sun comes out fully.

This is seriously annoying. This is even worse than being sold a lemon. Why not let a client know the options available and then let them make an informed choice? Sadly we can't purchase panels directly ourselves from overseas or even buy solar cells and DIY like it can be done with Lithium batteries. It would have cut down chances of falling into the hands of these fraudsters.

Inverters, Lithium cells, controllers, switches, meters can all be personally ordered from reputable manufacturers and bypass fraudulent middle marketers. But solar panels, no hope yet.

I guess we still have to hope reputable dealers maintain their reputation and sincerity.
