To me ooo, I feel you should be contacting the bank or asking other people that subscribed here if they have heard from the Issuing Houses they used. I don't think anyone has heard from any of the issuing houses or broker/agents yet. If successful, you will be contacted and certified/proof of investment forward to the email through which you communicated with them. Also, people around here will talk about it.

Yes, the allocation has not been advised but the issuing house/broker ought to have acknowledged the application form and payment at the very least.

Few things to Note in 2022

In few hours it will be another year. 2022 … is loading.
I believe the out going year 2021 had its ups and downs, there were some mistakes and likewise some areas where things were done right in terms of investment decisions.
Many met their saving and investment objectives while some could not, some miss opportunities while others make use of opportunities, in all we have learnt one lesson or the other.

As we look forward to a new year, here are some good investment practices that could help:

1. In all your investment moves make sure the safety of your capital takes priority.

2. Note that you can’t be everywhere in terms of investment rather go for what you understand, and you have ability to cope with the inherent risk.

3. One of the best moves in investment is to start with what you have. Don’t wait till you have all the millions. Do something with what you have currently and build on it.
For instance if you have plans to invest in bonds or real estate and currently you only have tens or hundreds of thousands why not start with mutual funds that can help you build your funds gradually and in no time you can invest in your desired investment window rather than waiting and your money losing value.

4. There will always be Ponzi schemes so watch out and tread carefully. When returns look too good to be true it’s most likely not true no matter who is involved.

5. Don’t tie your investment decisions only on rumors. Do your due diligence always. Note sometimes you may see yourself going alone on your decision to invest, don’t bother in as much as you are sure and know you are on the right track.

6. Always endeavor to have a balance portfolio that can help in your risk management. Risks are managed better when spread across different investment windows.

7. Don’t forget according to Warren Buffett
Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget rule No.1

I wish you all happy, bullish, and high yielding 2022

Headlines like this are why I object when people use phrases similar to 'leave it to the professionals in power understand better'

Borrowing isn't bad but when a government official sees borrowing from the sake of it as an achievement without considering the rate, what those borrowed funds are used for, sustainability e.t.c, then it leaves me scratching my head.

If I may. You're actually reinforcing our view. How can an FGN bond be priced at 13% with a corporate bond at 12%? This is only possible if the said corporate has significant foreign revenues that can be said to 'pierce the national veil'

The country can always print money to service its bonds, or tax the corporates more.

And, if the nation defaults, the corporates are marked down because political risk has increased in their operating environments.

I think the advisors on the Sukuk screwed up and overlooked their mandate. I deal with these guys all the time. It's year end - they get lost and giddy about their individual bonuses.

Here, I'd say it's not the volume of oversubscriptions that is the success benchmark, but the lowest cost (to the country) to achieve the required bond amount.

Peace.

Thanks for this. Especially the last paragraph. Same thing they say after every borrowing spree.

The last eurobond offering was oversubscribed and they boasted about it forgetting it was offered at a rate almost ten times higher than any Western nation would borrow. Even individuals borrow at much lower amounts. Somethings don't just add up

Over N800 billion was raised within 5 days for Sukuk 4.

I can tell you that the total money realized from retail investors and those who invested N100 million and below is about N80 billion.

And the additional N750 billion was raised by the big boys ie Banks, Pension Fund Managers, Insurance companies, Mutual fund managers and other institutional Investors about 9 hours before the deadline which was midnight of 23rd December 2021.

There is a reason why DMO sent messages about 12 hours before the deadline that coupon had increased from 12.8% to 13%.

Out of curiosity, is this confirmed/verifiable?
Such behaviour should warrant an investigation

The big boys buy public offers at the very last minutes, usually few hours to the end of the offer

Is there a possibility these institutions knew beforehand the government was tinkering with increasing the rate and hence stayed away or that they worked in tandem to hoodwink the government into further increasing the rate?

I don't want to believe that the internal decision for these institutions to invest was done and dusted within 9 hours. The decision must have been made long beforehand while they bidded time

Interest rates are expected to go up by second quarter of 2022.

They have professionals who can accurately predict some of these things.

They are informed about opportunities that can give different returns.

Retail Investors are given top priority during public offers, especially those sponsored by government.

This is why the big boys wait till the last minutes before coming on board. The issuing house has the exact figure of the fund raised on a per minute basis.

The big boys will also want maximum return on their fund. Assuming one wants to invest N10 billion in a public offer that is opened for 2 weeks.

They want to keep on earning interest from the money for the next 13 days and then in invest in the public offer at the last minute.

It was not done and dusted in 9 hours but they are on standby or the reserve bench to come in if the need arises.

Assuming N240 billion was already raised from retail Investors 24 hours to the end of the offer, they won't waste their time trying to invest in the offer.

Excess fund from the offer are usually returned about 3 weeks to 4 weeks after the offer, these funds will not earn interest and they are careful to avoid this type of scenario

Emmanuel can you throw more light on differences between coupons rate and yield to maturity rate. I was thinking coupons is the rate that you would be paid biannual for the maturity period. If so then what is the yield to maturity rate?

A bond of N100 at a coupon of 15% has a yield of 15%.

If the bond should appreciate to N120 the coupon is still N15, but the yield is now 12.5%.

If the price of the bond should fall to N90, the coupon on the bond is still N15 but the yield is 16.7%

You will get N15 as your coupon throughout the tenure of the bond, but your yield will vary based on the price of the bond

If what you said is the norm, then the professionals at DMO didn't act like they knew it. They should have been able to guage institutional appetite (that's what they're paid for) and not scramble to further increase of the rates at a time when institutions were already rushing come on board.

The year is still young.... Let's see how things pan out. Already, the CBN just silently squeezed in another devaluation before the turn of last year.
