Sylvester Oromoni: Autopsy report out, exonerates house master, others from murder - Vanguard News

The autopsy report conducted on the corpse of late Sylvester Oromoni, alleged victim of bullying, at the Dowen College, Lagos, is out.

The report however, exonerated the school’s House Master and other students  arrested in connection with the alleged murder.

Consequently, the suspects who have been in Police custody at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence  Department, Yaba, for over three weeks, were released last week Thursday, on bail.

It would be recalled that the deceased, who was a Junior Secondary School 2 student of the school and a boarder, was rushed to his parents home in Warri, Delta State two months ago, owing to some injuries he sustained while playing football, according to the school. But his parents  faulted the school’s claim, disclosing  rather, that their son revealed that the injuries were inflicted on him by some senior students who wanted to force him to join their cult group.

Late Sylvester, died few days before he would be 12 years old, from internal injuries  which included kidney enlargement.

In the course of investigation into the alleged murder, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Hakeem Odumosu, revealed that the autopsy report released did not show that late Sylvester was murdered.

He was, however, quick to add that investigation was still ongoing, part of which was the toxicology test that needed to be conducted  on the corpse.

Shedding more light on the investigation, Odumosu, said, ” We are not at the peak yet. But we have done  our investigation and have sent the report to the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP for legal advise on those arrested and DPP has replied.

We have gone through the medical aspect  which is the post mortem.

Post mortem was carried out in Delta and Lagos states. The first one done in Delta State was only witnessed by parents of the deceased.

“But after I held a meeting with the parties concerned, at the instance and directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu  and my Inspector- General of Police, IGP Alkali Usman Baba, the second post mortem was carried out in Lagos.

The corpse was brought from Delta State to Lagos, where the Post mortem was carried out with all the parties involved , that is : parents of the deceased, parents of the students accused, the school authority  and government.* These were the four parties that witnessed the post mortem. *And the result is out* .

The report of the Post Mortem did not bring out the issue of murder on anybody.

“Besides the result of the autopsy, the court order that we got has elapsed  and we have released the house master and others on bail, because there was nothing that indicted them of murder.

“It is only a murder case that is not bailable. Every other offences are bailable. They have been in custody for more than twenty days and that is infringing on their fundamental human rights. Since medical and legal reports have not indicted them so far, I think there is need to allow them have their freedom because bail is not the end of the case.

Another forensic test known as toxicology , will be carried out on the corpse” Odumosu informed

By the way, the  Toxicology test is to determine the concoction that was allegedly forced into the deceased mouth which peeled his lips. The test according to Odumosu, would be conducted abroad.

He explained that “Toxicology test was being done in Nigeria before, precisely at the Lagos State medical facility in Lagos Island. But after the EndASRS crisis, it is conducted outside the country.

Until that one is effectively done, we won’t know the final report. But with the interim report, nothing showed  murder”, AIG Odumosu stated.

I hope the parents of the children who killed the boy didn't sort the issue out already, if he took a substance, then why are there marks of beating on his body, i really feel sorry for the boy, only if the autopsy can be secretly carried out abroad with only the parents knowledge. SMH

The moment the school allowed those accused boys to flee, na there I know say their way no pure.

Well, like I said before there are hundreds of other Sylvester out there, mostly in public schools across Nigeria whom are being initiated into cults, some of them don't survive it too, but we don't get to hear it because they are children of the poor

According to police report since it wasn't murder, are they now saying it was suicide?

A small boy beat himself and drank a toxic liquid by himself?

What doesn't happen in Nigeria doesn't exist.

It's so sad but I always knew this kid won't get any justice even if he wasn't murdered he was likely pressured to suicide, he probably thought the beatings and torment will never end since his dumb dad didn't move him from the school when he complained... Suicide is not limited to any age . The last beating must have been very severe he felt dying is much better but it won't be shocking if we find out those guys forced the chemicals down his throat, he's a kid and he can't resist that much.. don't fight rich people in Nigeria if you die, they will disappear mysteriously and nothing sup .

The NPF is so shallow and incompetent. Murder is not only stabbing or shooting someone. If actions lead to another's death, it's also murder. That is what has happened in Sylvester's case.

Thank God the videos of the boy are online for all to see. Heartless and inept people.

I sincerely hope the police are doing a thorough job because this statement if true that it came from the police raises more questions. For example, were the injuries or whatever internal kidney enlargement consistent with foot ball injuries as alleged to have been the position of the school management regarding the injuries sustained by the boy.?

Furthermore, the decision to rule out murder seems to have been based entirely on the said medical report. But what about the police investigation itself. When/If they interviewed classmates, friends, teachers etc, what have they found out. The toxicology report they are waiting for will simply tell what the child ingested. But this will not answer the questions as to whether he took it voluntarily or was made or tolled to do so or how the substance came in possession of the child. Forensic/ medical report as well as what the police discovers in the field (I.e interactions with various actors) should go side by side and not just medical/ forensic report alone.

My heart really goes out to the boy. There should be a detailed explanation as to how different activities could have led to this situation. Even the role of the parents. I can't help shake the feelings that they themselves were somehow negligent in terms of how they handled the whole situation including the alleged bullying that they were made aware of by their child.

Even if he was killed due to the effect of the substance he took, one of the unanswered questions would still be that "did he take this substance voluntarily?"
