I left my job so i can be independent to pursue my interest in farming and others. We are not restricted to piggery, we are going into other livestock gradually. And yes, piggery can serve as a full time job, it may be difficult for a starter for the first 5 months as u keep investing, buying feeds, medications etc. But when they are matured, and they start reproducing, then you are rest assured your smile will be broad and natural. A pig gives birth twice a year.

Happy New Year!
Guess your farm is doing good

Please I'd like to ask a few questions....

Why did you chose varying species instead of 1 or 2 good breeds?

How do you tame the pungent smell of your piggery farm in the neighborhood?

How do you measure the weight of your pig before selling them. Is there any specific method or you have to carry them on the scale.

We are doing very good...
To answer your question, the two dominant breeds here is large white & land race. Large white are known to grow so big up to 350kg while land race are known to be good mothers and their litters in most cases are much more than the former.

For your second question, my farm doesnt smell at all, infact we eat sometimes in the pen. The secret is simple, the farm hand clean the pen thoroughly morning and evening, and we have good drainage system and a sock-away. However all these wouldnt have been possible if one doesnt have a well or borehole as the case may be on the farm, pig farm requires adequate water supply.

Yes, they have to weigh them on a scale to determine their weight. There are different scales anyway, the most efficient is the broad one that the pigs can walk on.

Is that soya milk in the drum please?

wizzie001:
A drum of milk we use in mixing their feeds, after taking the milk, you will see some of the pigs napping while eating, it induces sleep and it helps them grow faster and fresher!
Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by crownmichael(m): 9:16am On Jan 15, 2022
Sorry, so how much is a litter now please?

wizzie001:

It is calculated in litres, a 425 litre fills up a drum. However, we havent been expending much on getting it save for the pittance i give the personnels who help me in filling the kegs up and the security guys. Build a solid relationship with people, they will come handy in time of need.

Thank you sir for your kind response.

How long does it take this dominant breeds to mature from birth?

Do you carry out artificial insemination just like some cattle farmers?

I see you're doing really well man. Wish you the very best.

Give them 9months at most, they are ready to mate... though some farmers dont have that patience, when a pig attains the body size they desire at 6month, some farmers do mate them... so it depends.

Some do carry out artificial insemination, but we dont have need for that due to availability of male adult pigs on the farm.

[quote author=wizzie001 post=105972863]It gets to a stage in life where one pushes himself to achieve what seems beyond reach due to the economic woes we are faced with in Nigeria.

It was a sunny afternoon, i was comfortably seated at my air conditioner office, pondering about events staring at me, getting married in few weeks time with a salary of about 150k with an official car in Lagos doesnt look right to me. Starting a family in such situation wasnt what i wanted but, but alas, this is Nigeria with limited opportunities.

I started planning on whether to start my own business in that line or venture into agriculture full time, i settled for the former... I was doing really fine, travelling across the country executing contracts until covid came, and it was like we were back to square one.

I relocated my family to Ibadan from Lagos as soon as covid subsided a bit, then i wrote an application to different government agencies seeking for a land lease, after some some few months of aggressive applications, i was able to secure some acres not far away from my abode. However, during the period of looking for land, i registered at college of forestry to attain some basic knowledge on what i'm about to venture into, i've got no knowledge whatsoever about farming, but i know i have a thing for livestock.

I was able to get some practical knowledge from a good samaritan who told me to feel free to visit his pig farm anytime i so wish. I will forever be gratful pastor, one hardly come across people like that who is willing to help. With that, i got to know there are different types of breeds in pigs, such as:
●Land race
●Large white
●Duroc
●Camburough
●Local breeds etc.

While i was waiting to complete the construction of my own pen, i rented 4 rooms pen at a farm, each goes for 15k/year. Then i bought a pure female landrace weaner at 40k, then 5 pure white females at 25k each. I placed them in 3 of the rooms while i used the fourth for food storage.

I really have interest in pig farming. Which of the breeds will you recommend someone to buy why venturing into the pig farming.

Where is your location?

Sincerely, all the breeds are good considering the feeds formula and care they receive.
However, pig farmers always prefer large white and landrace the most. Duroc is more expensive than these breeds.
Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by wizzie001(m): 2:44pm On Sep 24, 2022
Its been a while i update this thread, i will make it an effort to always try and update from time to time.

My primary aim of creating the thread is basically to educate and also show Nigerians how quickly one can become a millionaire simply by having a pig farm.

Knowledge they say is power, but information in this life is very vital, it create a path to wealth.

In my earlier thread, i stated how i started with some few piglets and renting 4 room pen. Today, i have about 30 room pen strictly for pigs, and over 200 pigs/weaners.

I will be updating about the management, challenges and gains accrued hitherto, i will back it up with some pictures from time to time too.

I will also be willing to assist as many who are interested in starting a pig farm (preferably within Ibadan, because you will need to be on ground to monitor the progress) with how to lease a land to start a farm, or renting pig pens with good water system, where and how to formulate quality feeds, and most importantly how to get good pure breeds pigs for your farm.

Considering you are starting at Ogun state, i wouldnt know how much renting a pig pen goes for over there. But in Ibadan here, its just 15k per/pen yearly rent. However, if you have a land or your compund is quite spacious, you can always construct few pens with bamboo to cut cost.

●Cost of rent=15k/year.
●You can either decide to get one or two weaners depending on your budget (1 pure breed weaner @30k
●Feeds that can last atleast 6months @60k
●Total @#105k
