If you're good enough you wouldn't need an interview.

I don't imagine any company interviewing Elon Musk of 2022 for a job should he take up a job offer.

You begin by restating their problems back to them to show them that you understand it properly.

Because, let’s face it: human beings are selfish at heart, and we are only interested in how we can benefit.

Your potential clients/employers are doubly so because they would be paying for you out of their own pocket, so they want to be sure it’s ultimately in their best interests to do so.

So, restate the original problem as stated in the job description.

I know you have this problem, and because I have skill set A, B, and C, and I have been working in this niche for a while now so I’m quite proficient at what I do

You might be paying me X amount of money, but hiring me would save you Y amount of money from working with amateurs, or lazy people.

You might be paying me X amount of money, but hiring me would earn you Z amount of money.

You can track me over the next ninety days and I'll prove to you why I'm the best hiring decision you have made.

Make a list of your achievements and accolades if you have them. Highlight the education and training you have taken (even if your best education was a free course on Udemy).

When talking about your skill set, make sure you discuss your relevant hard and soft skills in detail.

Cheers and good luck applying!

You just wish we could demand such diligence from our elected leaders particularly the President of Nigeria who matters above all.

People can master interviews like exams and give you exactly what you want to hear. But the real assessment is on the job.

This is true... and common. Most likely when you see a clueless person holding down a job ... it is either by connection....or the person is very good at interviews. I know people who have the gift of words .... you will think they have PhD... but are illiterates.... and I mean illiterates.... cannot read or write to save their lives.

Those who seldomly do well are those that will always deliver on the job if they're hired. Experience thought me this

Hiring people is like picking apples. You pick the good and bad ones and put them all on the job then keep an eye. Between two weeks and two months you should be able to tell who you need and who you don't. Been there done that, and it worked perfectly well.

People can master interviews like exams and give you exactly what you want to hear. But the real assessment is on the job.

Q:Why Should We Hire You?

A:Well, I am a confident, hardworking and a very professional individual. I have always carried out all the tasks assigned to me without hesitation, provided the instructions from my Reporting Managers or seniors were clear. I have also been a good mentor to my juniors and never hesitate to guide them. On the other hand, I am a creative person and I love to test my boundaries. In order to do so, I keep pushing myself to think out of the box!”

It goes beyond what you are, but HOW you will go about it.

The interviews I participate in my private concern centers on specifics these days and a lot of employers I know are not shying away from positing real life scenarios, issues affecting them which they desire the would be employee to tackle.

The Nigeria economic scenario of today more or less demands specialists in a variety of positions and the candidate must be prepared to provide solutions on the fly. At least to test whether he or she is mentally capable and alert to the present day realities.

There was this interview where the candidate was given a company report and given 30 minutes to go over it and suggest solutions for a turnaround within 3 weeks. This is blatantly brutal but hey, that is the reality of corporate Nigeria today.

As a job seeker I hated interviews, even now as an employer I still do. And both for the same reason: just because a person didn't do well in his interview doesn't mean he'd not have been the perfect fit for the job.

Honestly!

As an employer, it's more difficult...

People can do well at the interview and still be incompetent when you hire them.

Nice, however, I took a different approach a few years ago and the interviewers were impressed. I just told them...because your (company's) vision "is" in line with my vision. This would give me not just room to grow but enjoy my duties/tasks.
The next follow-up question was: what was my vision....So I went ahead to discuss (at length) the vision and how it aligned with that of the company. They asked me to resume the following day!

Until when we break free from this mental block. It's not a must someone must hire you.
Think of doing something on your own. It won't be easy but you can try.

They said 240,000 of 600,000 naija yearly graduates will be unemployed. If you are an undergraduate or a graduate... Kindly check my signature for a solution.

You won't regret it.

Thanks.

if you show up for the interview you should be able to prove why they are lucky to have you. That's exactly what the posters is trying to teach you. You don't just show up in my house and tell me I'm lucky to have you around, you should make me see how I'm lucky you are around

Lol this reminds me of a white girls response to this question some years back.

Interviewers : why do you think we should hire you?

White girl: what a dumb question. Of course, You should hire me cos I need the goddamn money to pay my bills. I got bills to pay.

I need to change my wardrobe as you can see. I need the money to live a good life!

Lol.. I can't stop laughing any time I remember this or hear this question.
I mean there's an element of truth in what she said. At least im not only going to be working towards the growth of the company, I'll work for my pocket too... grin Yeye girl.

Actually, the white girl was right.

But anyway, there is no one-size fit all answer to the question, it depends on the circumstances that leads to that question, the nature of the job, answer to an engineering job will be different from sale person's job or a medical job, likewise, level of experience.

for example products manufacturing, if you have the experience you don't need too much talk. a developer - no need too much talk.

a mechanic for example - hire him, give ham car to repair and let see.

Don't sell yourself cheap and don't do more than what you are being paid to do.

and don't forget to invest some percentage of your paycheck on SPY stock

For me I try to match my experience, skills and acheivements with the JOB description as published on the internet.

So if you want a front end developer with 2yrs experience that knows html css JavaScript and one framework as published on the internet

Then repeat to them that you know they seek a candidate that has xyz with x number of experience and this is an area you have honed for x number of years. You have extensive knowledge in frameworks like react and angular which you have applied in helping improve business revenue and increasing visibility. And you would like to apply these skill set in this role if you can be brought on board.

Once you show them that what they are looking for is in a guy sitting next to them.
Forget about the salary negotiation, coz u will have the upper hand.

Nice but job description does not state the reason why they want to employ you. And stating within 90 days, you would have achieved certain things could be counter productive. In some profession, it takes a while to hit the ground running. Don't invite undue pressure or state unrealistic deadline because you want to land a job. Don't oversell yourself.

GaryVee has said that employers should get comfortable with sacking simply because of this reason you mentioned.

You never know if that guy who performed well at the interview will take instructions and do the job, so you must have be ready to lay him and go back into the market
