Should I Use My Life Savings To Learn Solar Installation? by DantataIsMyGuy: 3:52pm On Jan 24, 2022
Hello all. I'm a 25year old unemployed graduate. I finished my NYSC last year and i was able to save less than 50k. After spending 6months without any forthcoming job, I've used about 20k out of the money and all I'm left with in this life is 30k. I was introduced to a solar installation class during Nysc and i decided to give it a try.

The registration is about 21k plus transport to the venue will cost me about 30k for the 6months. I was told there would be a certificate after the training, but I'm still a bit skeptical about the course because i don't know how lucrative the skill is, because i once read a nairaland post on how a guy bought his panels and fixed it himself after going through the manuals.

So my question now is, should i invest my life savings on this course? Is it lucrative? Will the certificate matter at all? Can i build a career from it?

I just opened this account to hide my identity.
Please help me move this to front page please

You don't need to do that.

because i once read a nairaland post on how a guy bought his panels and fixed it himself after going through the manuals.

You have already answered the question here. DIY is the way. Becoming a big time installer is not what you can learn in 6 months, it requires longer time, experience and interacting with experienced installers. You can learn basic knowledge about solar without spending so much. Resources abound online. Here is a link on NL to pick up bits and pieces about solar. It may take sometime to get the most of the knowledge you require, but it's better that way.

I will suggest you use your savings for a small business.

You can use it but don't call that small money your life savings. You go become billionaire someday if you don't give up. Money will always locate he/She that refuses to backdown.

I believe there are people in this niche here. Their advice would be better. I don't know anything about solar installations. But your life saving is nothing to write about. Work hard o

I will say yes. That thirty thousand you’ll invest into the skill will quadruple in one or two installations. I’m going through the same situation although for a different skill. I will not regret going for the training.

Young man gives it a try, a friend of mine is making a living out of it today. Although he is into an electric works as well, he does automation as well but trust me he is earning big in it. Not everyone can handle the job of solar installation themselves especially the youths of today who are so lazy in flushing their own shit in the toilet.

Trust God and give it a shot Cox no knowledge is a waste.

Don't worry about the guy that installed by himself, there is always going to be demand for solar technicians

B4 u invest in learning any business go those in the business and ask what their experience and challenges are.

Also check ur immediate environment and see if there are people inneed of such services.

6months is a long time to learn solar installation. What exactly do they wanna teach?? I would rather go and under study some doing the job itself.

As for the certificate it is useless unless u plan to use it to get a job in a solar company.

Have u tried to get a temporary teaching job?? I think they are easy to get depending on ur location.

No money spent on training, is wasted ....... You are making better of yourself, by acquiring more knowledge, it might not be useful today, but might be useful tomorrow.......

After your training, work for free, to gather experience......

Wise up bro.... You can take part of the money to buy necessary tools and build up yourself by following nairaland solar inverter installation threads while you still support it with YouTube videos for the practical aspects.

Below link is one of nairaland solar installation discussion.

I know you'll still get more if you can search through nairaland.

Don't just go for the 6 months classes. Find a way to attach yourself with someone who is already doing the solar installation. It's what I do and I can tell you that almost everyday, money enters my hand.

I started in 2018 having taught in a secondary school for 3 yrs with nothing to show for it. I'm still under my boss but I do my own stuffs too. For instance, I serviced someone's inverter yesterday for 11k, and maintained another clients solar panels for 30k on Saturday.

I also do electrical work and maintenance, all these I learnt in the years I've been with my boss. My boss is a good man also and allows me service my clients most times even though I'm On a salary. And I didn't pay with money to learn it, I paid with my time, energy and dedication.. Do likewise..
