The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, said any attempt to deny the South-East the presidency in 2023 is a gang-up against the region dominated by Igbo.

Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in a chat with Sunday Vanguard, said those opposed to Igbo President are discriminatory against the region.

The statement was interpreted in many politically informed circles to mean that the group may not back a Yoruba aspirant for the nation’s highest office in 2023.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are believed to be main contenders in the race to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari from the South-West while Senator Pius Anyim and Governor Dave Umahi among others from the South-East and also eyeing Aso Rock Villa..

Whereas Tinubu has publicly declared his ambition, Osinbajo is said to be considering running against his mentor who was single handedly responsible for his nomination to run as deputy to Buhari first in 2015 and later in 2019.

Adebanjo said: “If there is anything like power shift in Nigeria, it should go to the South-East. There is doubt about that, any other thing is just gang-up.

“There should not be any argument about that because the South-West has gotten it, the North has gotten, South-South has gotten it. You want the Igbo to remain in Nigeria but you want to discriminate against them.

“There should be no argument about where power should shift to, it should go to the South-East. Any other thing is gang-up

The South is always in the habit of complicating things for itself.
No party in the past have ever micro zoned their presidential ticket.

In fact the past two successive Presidents (Yar'Adua & Buhari) from the North do not only come from one zone the NW but from the same state Katsina. Northerners from the other two zones NE & NC are not crying of marginalization cus they understand the game of politics, but down south the case is different.

Thank you Afenifere for showing that you are truly elders and the moral conscience of the Yoruba people.

I expect PANDEF, the Middle belt Forum and the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) to follow suit if they, as elders, are truly interested in the continued peaceful co-existence of this entity called Nigeria.

Now, let me use this opportunity to let the Yorubas know that we do not hate them. We appreciate your hospitality in Lagos and everywhere else in the Southwest; our agitation is borne out drive for fairness, equity and justice and not out of hatred for Yoruba.

At the return of Democracy in 1999, Igbos voted a Yoruba man to become president in compensation for Abiola. We repeated same in 2003 against even Ojukwu and thereby helped give a Yoruba man a complete 8 years of presidency.

In 2007, we voted for a northerner but fate had its way GEJ took power.

In 2011 and 2015, we voted for Goodluck Jonathan from Southsouth as president though he lost in 2015.

Same 2015, another northerner took power with another Yoruba as vice.

So by 2023, the Yoruba shall have been around the presidency for 16 years in 24 years and they want another 8 years of presidency while Southeast has had none.

What do you call that?

When consultations start, Afenifere will be consulted in southwest, Ohaneze will be consulted in Southeast, PANDEF will be consulted in Southsouth and Arewa Forum will be consulted in the north.

Trust me, the average Igbo peasant farmer in his farm in Ebonyi state does not know George Obiozor; the average Yoruba man in his hamlet in Ekiti might not know Pa Adebanjo nor does the average Annag man in Akwa Ibom know Edwin Clark, but these are men that will decide the direction their future will take or the political choices that would be left for them if I were to be particular.

When the political parties find out that both Afenifere, Ohaneze, PANDEF, Middle Belt Forum and ACF are in agreement on where the presidency should go, you'd see how that would inform their zoning formula.

So save us your cry of nobody knows Pa Adebanjo in the streets of Yoruba land and accept that Tinubu's ambition is going up in flames and the cork has not crowed.

These are the true elders, the North have destroyed the southern governors forum and turned the Yorubas against the Igbos with the 2023 presidency that the North might still retain, if Apc fields Tinubu with a northern muslim as his running mate as he has said earlier and PDP fields Atiku with Peter Obi as his running mate, the southeast and south south might vote for PDP just to spite the Yorubas for what they consider a betrayal so the Fulani retains power.
