It's nice to see a lot of people out here interested in HSE. I myself is a safety professional, did my level 1,2,3 at NISP in 2005, so I've practically been in the safety field for about 7yrs. I totally disagree with anybody that says if ur certificate is not from NISP u are on ur own. NISP was someones idea, it was setup, owned and run by SPDC and has been around since the 80's. They are not in position to accredit anybody cos its not a nigerian safety licensing body. Its is only advisable to get certified by them cos they have been around for so long and more recognized... For those interested in Nebosh have in mind that Nebosh has different certificates. I recommend NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety. Its new hot and spicy, strictly for Oil & Gas. If there's anything u feel I can help u with just holler. allaputa_abiye@yahoo.com

brainwave:

@envee, sorry this is coming late

To answer your question, i.e, NISP or PDG in Shipping, your choice should be determined by your post-NYSC career plans. You may have to decide if you'd want to go into HSE proper or not. Understandably, there's an element of uncertainty in making such decisions especially when you don't have a ready job waiting.

The good thing about the NISP pathway is that you can take it in bits n pieces i.e over a long period of time. But for specifics, you may enquire in advance with your university of choice about the suitability of NISP certification for MSc admission puposes.

Brainwave, I never got to thank you for your advice but I believe its better late than ever.

Thank you so much.! I am now NISP certified and also did an online program from OSHA and I haven't regretted taking those decisions. The journey still continues for me as NEBOSH is the next item on my agenda.

My main interest is in the Maritime (Safety) Industry because of the little theoretical and practical knowledge I have gained in Shipping . I am currently serving and can't help feeling eager to begin to practice as soon as possible.

To all those that have taken time out to enlighten others on this thread, I say a big THANK YOU to y'all.
You've been a huge source of inspiration to us..

@sanod, a good place to start may be for you to take the pains to read through this HSE thread from page 1shocked . It may be more fun if you do it while sipping your favourite NON-ALCHOHOLIC drink (remember, safety first!grin ), in a calm or noise-free environment with a pen and a jotter at hand, in case you need to take some notes. If you're able to do this, I believe you'd have had most of your questions answered!

@cindy200, Hmmmnnnnnnn.....it might be easier giving you an advice if one has an idea of the options playing around your mind. What do you think your options are? If you can answer this question (as per the options you have), then I would expect that the good people of 'HSE' kingdom on nairaland will throw in helpful advices. Just my thoughts.........

@Dickson oil, if you're satisfied with the level of knowledge you've gathered in HSE for now, it may not be a bad idea if you go for the Marine course since you stated that you have a 'KEEN' interest in the course (that's assuming you have the resources to take on the course though). As to whether the course would have any impact on your profession, I'd say only time can tell.....

@cynthia, I'd say welcome on board the HSE train on nairaland!
Generally speaking, one can say that Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental Management is essentially, the same as HSE (Health, Safety & Environment). If you're talking of an MSc in either OHS&E or Environmental Management, those are different courses altogether albeit, with overlapping contents.
As for whether Masters in either of these fields gives you automatic access to IOSH graduate membership status, I sincerely cannot say.
On the issue of the availability of these OHSE courses only abroad & not locally (in Nigeria), I'd say I presently know that Institute of Petroleum Studies, UNIPORT offers the course at professional MSc level.

jimbass: @Big-Biye and Brainwave, I would need your advice on how to get a job in the health and safety field, I have Got NEBOSH IGC in occupational health and safety.

@jimbass, I wish I knew a 'fire-proof' formular for getting a job in HSE.....nevertheless, I'd urge you to try and grow your 'net-work' of HSE professionals and 'enthuthiasts'. By enthuthiasts, I mean people who are interested in or passionate about HSE (they don't necessarily need to have HSE jobs). Secondly, if you find any opportunity to volunteer on any project that has HSE practitioners involved, you can get to understudy them (yes, even without pay!). Such non-paid HSE work experience can very well, go on you CV and help build an experience in HSE which may catch the eye of potential employers.
Don't get tired of sourcing for HSE-related openings and haven said this much...keep PRAYing!
All the best brother!
