hazelle: Dear everyone, I'm a Petroleum and Gas undergraduate. I'm interested in taking the SHE course but first from NISP. The problem is this, I went online-to their website and saw so many health and safety courses with their individual prices. Now I'm confused on which to pick. Thought it was just a general stuff. Y'all should please advice me on what to do. Thanks.

@hazelle, there is actually a 'GENERAL HSE' course offered by NISP which affords participants the opportunity of have 'general' feel of HSE. I'll advise you re-check your source to verify this or alternatively, you may put a call through to NISP. Cheers!

Milito:

I indeed found this very useful. I have a keen interest in the 'Environment' aspect of HSE, but as u said it seems its not as favoured as the Occupational Health and Safety Aspect.

Brainwave and co. u are really doing a wonderful job on this thread. I actually started reading the thread from when u started it till present time (although i jumped 1 or 2 pages in 2010, lol). And I must confess I am really impressed. Brainwave and the other experienced guys in this field, pls I would like u to shed more light on the quote above. I was actually eager to read a response to this but was disappointed tht no response was given.

As I said earlier, I am more interested in the 'Environment' aspect of HSE. I studied BSc Environmental Biology and MSc Envt Pollution Mangt. But I have been stuck in Customer Service for a reputable company for 2 years plus now but I REALLY want to work in my field as my interest lies there. I have even done NISP Levels 2 and 3 (3yrs ago) and another Occupational Safety and Health certification last year but I'v been unable to move basically due to my lack of experience in this line.

Brainwave pls enlighten me:
- is the Envt aspect of HSE relegated in Nigeria?
- NEBOSH as u said is an expensive investment, is NEBOSH International General Certificate a Plus/value for someone interested mainly in the Envt aspect of HSE?
- whats ur professional opinion btw NEBOSH and IEMA?

@Milito, thanks for your inputs and observation. Sorry, no one responded to the earlier poster's enquiries but its good you've revived it. I'll attempt to provide answers to your enquiries. Note the word 'attempt', no one knows it all (including moi wink). Learning is continous:

- is the Envt aspect of HSE relegated in Nigeria?

Well, I do not think the 'E' aspect of HSE is exactly 'relegated' in Nigeria i.e, in relation to Health & Safety. I think its mostly a matter of the order of things or 'priority'. By this I mean its likely that organizations would focus first and foremost, on the Health and Safety of their workforce before considering the impact of their 'production activities' on the 'environment'. Nevertheless, the importance of the 'E' element in HSE cannot be underplayed because the interaction between 'man' and the 'environment' is 'circularly causal' that is, just as the condition or state of the environment affects or impacts man, man's activities also impact and determine the condition of the environment. In the sector I work, I can assure you that gevernmental/regulatory agencies constantly make certain that we do not neglect the 'E' function in HSE. They keep organizations on their toes in relation to 'environmental issues' such that one cannot but pay attention to the 'environment' aspect of HSE. Nevertheless, there's still mush room for improvement with regards to the level of 'environmental' awarenes in the land (Nigeria).

- NEBOSH as u said is an expensive investment, is NEBOSH International General Certificate a Plus/value for someone interested mainly in the Envt aspect of HSE?

I think each person has to have an idea of his/her desired career goals or destination before setting out on the best stategy or 'pathway' to arrive at that end or to achieve the set career goals. For someone mainly interested in the 'E' element of HSE as you said, the person still has to weigh the options available and determine whether or not, an investment in a 'NEBOSH' qualification would be of value now or in the future for him/her. Sometimes, its really about 'opportunity cost'.

- whats ur professional opinion btw NEBOSH and IEMA?[/quote]

We are in a rapidly changing world where the turn-around rate of knowledge and information is amazing and getting faster by the day. Yesterday's knowledge may not be adequate for today's challenge. I percieve IEMA as a specialist association for 'environmentalist' or 'environmental professionals or managers' while NEBOSH is also a professional qualification but generally more renown as a qualification with emphasis on Health and Safety . Like I earlier said, I think people should determine their desired 'career' destination, evaluate where they are presently, and plan/work out a 'flexible' strategy to get there. I say a 'flexible' strategy because its sometimes not advisable that people box themselves too tightly into a corner 'career-wise'. One of the ways of leaving a window open for other career options is by broadening one's knowledge/area of expertize i.e, by aquiring additional qualifications/skills that could enable one to diversify or switch career paths in the future if necessary. You may be an enviromentalist today and tommorow, situations change and a window of opportunity opens to practice difeerently e.g, as an occupational health and safety specialist or vice-versa. Will there be any certifications or qualifications you can leverage on if you do need to change careers in the near or not so near future? In the final analysis, I'd say 'one size doesn't fit all' in these matters.

Hello guys, i graduated from accounting about a year ago, just finished my ORACLE program 2weeks ago, tho still in the "Favour Market" for now. I was wondering if diversifying and taking some courses in HSE up to Level 3 would be an added advantage and boost my value with respect to securing a good job considering my Accounting background.

Hi, fellow HSE professionals. I just stumbled upon this great info today. I did my NISP 2&3 four yrs ago and finally added Nebosh IGC this year. If you really have the financial muscle, i would advise that those who do not have Nebosh yet should try to do so. Also, IOSH membership will be a GREAT advantage. There is an accredited company in naija that runs a promo in Nebosh course, thier fee is far lesser than the usual 350k every other coy charges.

How much is the company offering for the nebosh course?
Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by diehard(m): 6:04pm On Oct 27, 2012
@Milito & Brainwave, The 'E' part of the HSE is still very relevant in Nigeria, But most of the jobs for env'tal specalists are not from the big IOCs. the reason is that the env'tal impact of oil exploration can only be done by independent company sanction by DPR. Even communities are becoming wiser now and are exploying this companies to assess the impact in their community cos the data can be used to sue for damages against this oil companies. I've seen some of this law suit backed by env'tal studies claiming for damages running into billions of naira. and there very few env'tal specialists in nigeria.

i almost forgot this thread is still alive.
