If you people know the effects of black soot, you'll relocate to another state without wasting a minute. These chemist prescribed drugs wouldn't help you. Relocate!

I'd rather grab my luggage and join the nearest tomato trailer going to Lagos, sleep under the bridge, than to stay in a toxic environment. But they don't need to go to Lagos, Umuahia is close by and it's less than #2000 by bus.

The driver that carried me yesterday said Port Harcourt is better right now
Better doesn't mean it's not a problem.
I stay around Abacha rd, through out yesterday my wife was complaining about the floor and the bathroom.

Not everyone knows about nairaland. Some has posted on Facebook and whatsap that they know. Even the mask can't help for long. I now sleep with mask two days ago it almost choked me I've stopped. I close my windows yet it's not helping
Find a small cotton napkin/towel, make it moist with water and cover your face with it when you go to bed. That could help.

*It has to be a light towel, not thick!!

Wike said he's the most qualified person to become the next president.... And I wonder how a person like him that can't even find solution to a serious health issues of this kind, would want to become a president.....

Gaskiya, I thank God say I pull my brother comot for that state.... He came home sick from rivers.... that place is totally a damage zone.
Same way Buhari found solution to the terrorists in his Katsina Bushes

Wike has a hand in everything. He is the biggest oil bunkerer alive in Nigeria and would surely have boys who also illegally refine for him so he can have a share of the petroleum rain

Relocation is not the solution. There are millions and millions of people in PH and Rivers state. Do we expect all of them fo relocate? Rivers people need the intervention of Government to put an end to this menace

This can't happen in developed countries, the government will be up in debt, paying for damages .
A lot like this happen in developed countries, even in the US if you must know. There are communities in the US where there citizens have been crying out for decades because of the destruction of their environment from manufacturing processes. Many of these citizens have their life expectancy greatly reduced as they succumb to various forms of blood cancers etc.

Just pray that anywhere you are, the government does not shine eye on top the natural resource wey dey dia. Village life sometimes worths being envied.

Laughnow419:
Brother I want to relocate but to relocate na money na. I just wish Lalasticlala and Mynd44 can help take this to frontpage. Oyigbo own is the worst. When I was in Port Harcourt yesterday I was talking with some drivers they said Port Harcourt is better. Could u believe I slept with nose mask a day before yesterday and it almost choked me I dreamt when they were holding my neck when I I luckily woke up is the nose mask yet this thing is still entering my body. A man died while sleeping with nosemask it was on frontpage I think 2020. So I was scared but I have no choice. My Facebook account is too small to reach people that's why I came to nairaland.
I was scared at first but I have no choice.. The soot in Oyigbo has no comparison
It is actually the nose mask that gave you that terrible experience of sleep apnea, not the soot.

That being said, this has serious negative impact on the environment and on health. Things like this are responsible for acid rains. Long term exposure to things like this can also increase the risk of mesothelioma and lung cancer. But in most cases, it causes increase incidence if respiratory health issues like asthma and maybe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. They don't occur suddenly but after a long time of sustained exposure and damage. A post mortem examination of the lungs of someone from this area compared to that of someone in some village elsewhere will show marked difference. The former will be like a smoker's lungs.

The hairs in your nose do the first line of filtration of the air you breathe. Some of the particles still go thru and are trapped by the mucus in your nose and mucus that lines your airways. Mucus saturated with soot is that black stuff you blew out. The protective cells that line your lungs and airways (which form part of the body's immunity) in trying to do its job will also swallow and digest these particles, but since soot is not a living organism that can be digested and killed, it is only swallowed and sadly remains within those cells undigested. The cells can only swallow and sequestrate so much of these undigestibles before they start to be affected themselves.

Perhaps you should consider relocating from there. Relocation isn't usually an easy step to take. It's a major step of life and you have to consider a lot of things before you take such steps. But I think the benefit in this case will likely outweigh the risk. It becomes easier if you are single/unmarried. It's only a healthy body and mind that can work and make more money.

And while you are at it, you may get yourself an antidusk breathing mask. The regular nose masks may not do much.
