If na to shine teeth on Nairaland and argue about ethnic and political issues now you go dey prepared but job interview mbah.....lol. Interviews are already stressful enough if you're just starting out don't handicap yourself by relying on things like NEPA, outdated computer and just one network. A backup power supply which costs less than 60k could have saved you lots of stress and also next time during an interview, never ever talk about chances or apologize more than necessary.

I hope u make it..
If u succeed, try to invest in an inverter with your first pay.. If its solar, better still... Once it can carry your laptop, a few bulbs and a fan, then u are gd to go.

Funny though, and yeah I can relate.
One time I travelled to the village, there I recieved a mail for a virtual interview schedule with login details.
To avoid any hiccup I decided to go back to the city very early the next day.

Got to my place of work. Used the spare time to search for a better office setting with little or no noise.

Finally got two different office spaces.

20minutes prior to the time, got my wireless ear bud ready logged on to BlueJean app, every seem perfectly working, then i logged out.
Then the time came, I logged on again met this beautiful lady all smiles waiting for me, then I was like oh yeah today is gonna be a good day.
She did the usual introduction, then when I thought things where going on well, Boom just like a planned deal customers started trooping into the office in two's and three's, talking to each other in such a loud voice, I tried to turn my laptop so she won't see them, but the more I tried the more these people kept coming close to me asking me loads of questions, the environment become heated and uncomfortable, I gestured to a couple of them to keep their voices down, but they weren't taking it.
Then the lady noticed my frustration and offered to pause for 10-15 min so I can get a better environment. I thanked her and apologize, promising to come back online quick.
I packed my stuff, left the office space for them. Little did I know that my problem has just started. I searched the remaining offices, they were filled to the brim with customers. Damn that was an unusual thing to happen on a Wednesday afternoon.
Then the only option left to me was to use my directors office and hell yeah I have access to it.
With my laptop, charger, mobile phone and Bluetooth in my hand I made way to my directors office, only to be greeted by an external auditor, lounging in the rocking chair and making a loud phone call with the thickest Yoruba accent.
I murmured to myself "jesus, no no no not today not today".
Then I moved straight to the stored room, shut the door and turn the key.
Powered my lappy and got back online, this time the beautiful lady was gone, I don't know what happened, perhaps she had waited and lost patience.
I was greeted by a man, this guy decided to turn off his camera so I could only hear him speak. Talking to a man is the last thing I needed in this situation, I almost immediately demanded to speak to the previous lady, but I kept my cool.
So in the most professional way, he ran me through the interview process. I was sweating profusely because there was no fan or AC installed in the stored room. It was like hell. I kept wiping my face, and each wipe came with a smile, I tried to fake that everything was fine, but it wasn't. Worse case I can't see the interviewer's face so I can't figure what was going on in this head.
So in the end, he asked if I had any question to ask, I said no and apologized again.
He said okay and gave me the usual line "we'll get back to you".
Dear comrades its been over 3months, never heard from them. Have already moved on.

Note: My advice, just get yourself checked into a hotel whenever you have a virtual interview or assessment to curb all this hiccups.

After sending loads of applications for remote web dev positions throughout December without success I stopped applying and went into blockchain development. Last week I was replying a message on my LinkedIn account when I saw this jnr WordPress developer vacancy that popped up. I just applied since it takes less than a minute to do so on LinkedIn.

I was surprised when they sent me a mail two days later with a link to an assessment which I took and submitted. They got back to me some days later to fix an interview date, I choose Feb 9 among the listed options. The time options included 7pm, 7:15pm and 7:30pm and I chose the 1st option. The interview was supposed to last for just 15 minutes.

I left Chelsea's match that I was watching at half time to prepare for my interview. I asked one of my Nairaland friends for data and he sent me 3gb, I was all set up by 6:44 pm with a Bluetooth that I borrowed from a friend for the occasion. I didn't want any stories. If only I knew what was lying in wait for me....6:52 pm.....Boom!!! NEPA took light.

My laptop was fully charged but knowing fully well that my battery was not trustworthy, it would last 2 hours when it's in a good mood and 5 minutes on it's angry days. I grabbed my charger and extension and ran off to a nearby restaurant in my area. You think Usian Bolt can run baa? If you see my speed this evening you will like me. It was a combination of Bolt and Ben Johnson. I ran like a criminal that was escaping an angry mob about to lynch him, with the way I was grabbing my PC under my armpit I could easily be mistaken for a thief by the way.

I got there by 6:59 pm, plugged my stuffs and connected to the zoom call by 7: 02 pm, the beautiful oyinbo woman was already waiting. While she was in a well lit apartment, I was in a place with red and blue bulbs with my face barely visible even though I supported the light with my phone torch light flashing straight to my face.

She smiled immediately I came online, and murmured something, omo the Bluetooth was not connected o. Something I tested before connecting to the call, I was fumbling with my Bluetooth settings while she kept talking and gesticulating if I could hear her. The Bluetooth was connected to the system but was somehow not working, she saved me from my misery when she suggested we port to google meet for the interview.

I used the opportunity to check my Bluetooth settings well and connected to the call through a link she sent to my mail almost immediately. In the middle of the interview the restaurant gen went off throwing everywhere into darkness.... Omo!!!

I had to keep shining teeth and stretching my small eyes to its elastic limit because they were the only visible things from my end. She burst into laughter and I couldn't help but join her. It was as if she was in heaven calling someone in hell. I apologized and she told me not to worry that she understands amidst another bout of laughter that she was struggling to contain.

She shaa finished the interview with the normal I will get back to you after accessing the performance of other candidates, I still apologized for my interview settings hoping it won't affect my chances, she assured me that it won't have any bearing on her decision making as regards to selection of the successful candidate. She couldn't stop smiling throughout the interview that lasted for like 20 mins.

I packed my kaya and went home. I laughed my heart out while I narrated everything to my friend who rolled on the floor with laughter. The image of my eyes and teeth in darkness was so hilarious. This was actually my first interview and it will definitely live long in my memory.

That happens to a lot of people. I wish they give you the role!
But in case of next time, please get a portable generator, fuel it and make sure it is working well. That way you can do the interview in your house, where you can control your background view and noise. Also, you can politely ask the interviewer if you could reschedule, while assuring her that what is happening is unusual and beyond your control (pretend your backup power unit that was always reliable suddenly failed, or any other plausible explanation). Generally, most foreigners don't mind if you reschedule, unlike Nigerians that think like they are your God.
What happened as per light going off will actually influence their final decision, those people don't always know what it means to live in a country like Nigeria (if you impressed them the way you answered their questions, they won't dump you, though). But as for Bluetooth not working well, it's a normal thing for devices to fail, I've even seen cases where the interviewer has that kind of problem; but always test your devices less than 10 minutes before it starts. If you still encounter any issues, even if they don't express any concerns, make sure you convince them you couldn't help it, or ask for a few minutes to fix if possible.
Also have backup internet connection. From my experience, no network in Nigeria is foolproof. Use the best network in your location, and get the second best ready on standby incase the first one fails midway.
Please don't give up on applying, you might not get more than one interview for every 20-50 applications you make (so far you're living in Africa). Also target start-ups, you will have more interview invitations. Then, European companies will give you more consideration than the Americas because of closer time zones.
Good luck!

Been there before, that is why I advise developers to switch to Macbooks. They are just very reliable even though expensive. If you use a macbook you can trust the battery to last you at least 5 hours on heavy usage or 6-8 hours of light use.

When I take zoom calls with my clients I don't bother if there is light or not. I position my desk close to the Window. I know you are just starting out but when you start getting gigs invest in a better laptop.

I remember my own first experience with a foreign firm on Zoom.

I had to study Brighter Grammar to sharpen my English. I did a lot more other things. I even did rehearsals, studied the job description, downloaded videos on YouTube.

On D Day when I found myself on the hot seat, I became a stammerer. Ordinary to say hello back to the interviewer, I was just stammering all over the place like a fool. I was like "em...you see...hope you get." The Oyinbo man was just looking at me as if I were an alien from Mars. Next thing, the blunders started flowing. These were blunders which under normal circumstances I would never make. Anyways, at a point, I was so helpless that I laughed. The Oyinbo's expression was like, "What the damn is funny, you fool!"

Since then, I have developed a phobia for interviews with foreign firms.

What you should have:

- A good laptop with a good battery. If your battery is now bad, replace it from part of your earnings
- Know the strong network in your area, and study if there is a sweet spot in your house with excellent speed
- Get a Mifi of the strong network and place it in the sweet spot
- Have a standby generator or solar power source
- Have a good data plan, treat your work as a business, and take things seriously by planning ahead (no fire brigade approach).
- Be intentional about your appointments/interviews.
