Fintechs lavish money on people moving from banks because they believe they have the experience. You can always go back to the banking industry and even get grade 2-3 steps higher. A feat that might not have been possible if he stayed in the bank for the same number of years.

Someone asked me a question and although I gave my advise, I wish to throw it open to see if we can get more opinion. Would you take a FinTech job or a bank job (not as a contract staff)?

The thing is, he's already employed with one of the traditional commercial banks in Nigeria. But he recently saw an opportunity to start with a FinTech company. The FinTech company is into payments, cryptocurrency, and uses blockchain.

He's worried of the job security of being in a FinTech company due to the political climate – Nigeria's stance on cryptocurrency. But the company is diversified into all forms of payments.

He has been working with the traditional bank for years and it's much like wasting one's career.

Would you continue with the bank job till maybe when you find a better offer at a secure place or take the FinTech job which offers better pay but has low job security due to the country's aggressive political climate on cryptocurrency?
Bank Job is the better option. Most Fintechs DO NOT stand the test of time due to technological advancements coupled with unfavorable legislations.

Startups are bound to fail. There is no job security as you may be sacked at anytime due to high expectations especially if you are into sales and marketing. Startups such as fintechs also have stages of development. You may be suited to the current stage, but the startup is more likely to adjust its staff capacity, including retrenchment to make way for employees more suitable for their next stage of growth.

My advice is look at the difference between the bank pay and the proposed pay of the fintech for that role. If it is negligible, stay back in the bank. If huge in favour of the fintech, leave. If the fintech offers stock option, grab it too and quit.

Fundamentally, look at the age of the startup. If it is past 2 years or 3, then it can be considered relatively stable. If not, you may be part of an experiment that may fail. Be acutely sharp like an Eagle.

Last last, you can only make yourself rich. Not even the fintech and the bank can do that for you.

There is no way he or she will work in the bank and not leave with something to improve himself or herself even after the banking job.

I once worked in the bank as a marketer and I am happy because of what I learnt in the cause of the job,I met a whole alot people both good and the bad but in all,it was a nice experience.

Tell him or her to continue in the banking sector and learn something on the job.
Whatever i am today has been banking because I picked an interest in something which I earn alot from today.

My wife is a career banker in the operations, with 12 years experience.

Good luck to u guys.

Wow. I was interviewed by one of the new generation banks yesterday and it's about Marketing.... Can we talk about it. Either here? Thanks

Re: A Fintech Or A Bank Job? by Focusmind: 2:22pm On Feb 10, 2022
Please if it is a start-up FINTEC, biko, remain where you are now. The rate of mortality of start-ups, including fintecs in Nigeria is alarming. Don't be moved by the initial attractive pay. Once they are not able to scale through the difficult, competitive and challenging business terrain of Nigeria, they will just collapse.

I will advise you remain with the commercial bank, except if you are a contract staff with the commercial bank, you may give the fintec company a chance, otherwise, maintain.

We agree, there's no job security in the banking industry. But is there a future in such fintech given many countries stand on it? The answer is obvious.

Banks will make sure they squeeze all the money they are paying you out of your life

Fintechs are better for me

Fintechs that are established pay well and they were won't stress you like banks

Lol! Fintechs are basically banks on a budget. They squeeze life out of their staff. If you are in the industry, you'd know of what happened with a Piggy top shot that just "got up and quit". No waiting job, nothing in the pipeline. Just got fed up

It's inevitable. They are the future of Finance. When emails started people thought, who on earth will rely on an email. Today, people will request for an email to back up a verbal directive

All depends on his skills and confidence to be able to find yet another job in case the fintech fails. And on his financial margin of maneuver: With a family to provide for and a mortgage to service you can‘t take the same level of risk as a solo person.

You were vague in the bank job, is the bank job a Tech job or requires specialization. But I'll go with Fintech because that's a good space so def alot of jobs to get after this experience vs working in a bank, now if the bank role was something Technical like Oracle specialist or Technician that requires advanced skill yeah but if it is a branch level role, just go for the FinTech.

If the person is a programmer of has computer related skill, let him opt for Fintech; otherwise, remain with the traditional bank.

Can you survive without salary for 7 months?

If you can, please go for the fintech,

If you can’t, stay with the bank job.

Startup is full of risk, but the success can be massive too.
