Yes, you make much sense but Putin is only doing this because he is sure NATO won't intervene directly. NATO has said it repeatedly over couple of weeks they won't send soldiers to defend Ukraine.
Russia had been using one foot at a time to test the waters before taking their next step each time. They also know the boundaries NATO has set as red-line and won't cross it.
However, if Ukraine decides to fight it out, Russia will lose eventually, going by the world's definition of defeat. Ukraine has the man power. They just lack the tools, resources, and maybe, training.

Russia is outgunned in ships,ground forces ,airpower and it is outspent on defence 10 to 1 by NATO members.

I do not expect this to happen. But this is not absolutely impossible - shit happens.

In case that invasion occurs, the Ukrainian forces would have one big advantage - they will be fighting for their own land, while the Russian military will be just invasion forces, I doubt there are many reasons for them to feel this war as the liberation of Ukraine or something like that.

Another big point is, that it is very difficult to distinguish between any particular Ukrainian and Russian person without any serious interrogation, any of the Ukrainians may pretend to be Russian, which would make it very difficult to avoid a partisan war.

And the third big point is that some kind of partisan war will almost inevitably happen, so even in case Russian forces will win, Russia would need to make every effort to keep the situation under control.

All those reasons will render any benefits of that war into nothing, that is why I think and hope such a war will never happen.
