But over here in the south apartments go for $600 to $700 pm and renting a 3bedroom house with a private yard can go for $900. I've seen lots of single people stay together to cut costs even further and share the savings.

All I know is as an educated Nigerian earning a million naira here can live better than one living earning $5000 in the USA. You can own a house in 2 years , it's impossible for one living in the USA to do so. When we compare our Naira to USD we might be poor . But in reality you can survive on #50k a month with proper budgeting, the equivalence can't last you a week in USA

What is the point of this post? distract? discourage? You talked about rising inflation, but that seems to be a global trend, and not neccessarily unique to the US/west. Nigeria's is 15 percent while it's roughly half that in most western countries. Besides, inflation normally batter the poor most, and a in a country like Nigeria with nonexistent safety net it is even worst. Also, you seem to be ignorant of the fact that would-be emigres have diverse reasons for leaving, for some it is the security and safety western countries offer, while for others a good health care system and stability are major factors.

But the minimum wage and average rent per year doesn't have much difference. My point is that if California is an expensive place, then so should be the wages. As for the gas. There is no way out of it until the way stops

While I love the advise of saving enough before travelling, it is also important that people travel to the right country and via the right route. This picture attached is an Oyibo who most likely refused to do higher paying job so as to get benefits from government. Paramedics, care assistance, Customer support In her city earns over 36,000usd per annum after tax. Also why choose to live in big apartment when your pay is low. She is struggling to get divorce benefits which is her business, however coming to state she used it for rent is to gain sympathy and nothing more.

Nigerians who decide to leave Naija for greener pastures should consider the country, and make sure they come in using the right route(student, work visa or immigrant visas), overstaying a visiting visa in most counties is a big risk as you will not be allowed to legally work which slims your options to 'under the table' jobs with crazy conditions and sometimes low pay.

In the end, before you travel to anywhere please count your costs and be determined to succeed and it will be done, it will take time but a few intentional actions here and there will make you succeed.
