I started my graphic design journey here with a logo around 2017. Initially I wanted to complete the job and get paid in full, but after so many corrections, I asked to be paid 50% before I go any further. The client paid almost 80% and balanced with the remaining 20% when the job was delivered.
I have adopted this model up to this moment and it has been working for me.
I have clients from nairaland since 2017 that I still work for up till this moment and we never had issue and funny part is we've never met before.
Except for Mr Eric and his Gf who I volunteered to work for on a vocational skill training. Mind you this training wasn't free but I did about 12 free design without a kobo around 2019. Since then, they feel entitled to free designs from me which I always decline. Recently(2022) he wanted a design and agreed to pay, he made several corrections/complain (I guess cuz he doesn't want to pay) but later agreed its fine that I should send my account details. Could you belive after more than two weeks I had to message him, he replied he didn't pay me cuz he gave the job to someone else since I didn't do the design to his taste.
In summary,
IF YOU DO FREE DESIGNS TO PEOPLE, THEY WONT COME TO YOU WHEN THEY HAVE MONEY TO PAY CUZ THEY WON'T VALUE YOUR WORK. if it can be free, then its worthless..
As a designer, I will subscribe to the internet to research or download resources for project, I will fuel/maintain generator, the time spent, I bought my pc etc and yet some people want free design.

The solution is always collect advance before you work, if you are good, they will always pay. Some might not pay the balance, at least you will get something for your efforts

A very good graphic/web designer can never be short of work

Had a recent burst like that for a big man.

He rushed me to get the job done and I did within 24hrs. I asked for payment the next day, he read myessage but didn't respond.

I messaged him with big grammar after 16 days and he told me he can't do transfer and only pays cash, well I waited over 6 hours to see him pass in area the next and I collected my money.

Baba say I dey para for am, I just use laugh collect my money.

Why did I wait over 16 days you may ask, because I know I was still gonna see him around.

Why Is It That Nigerians Don't Like Paying For Services.

No national or individual anywhere in the world likes paying for services or indeed paying for anything. Service providers need to create means of preventing the more unethical potential customer freely accessing services that require payments.

That's what happens when you don't list out your charges but expect them to "know what to do".

I'm a graphics designer and Web developer.

I have worked for many Nigerians, but what I noticed is that when they need the work, their pressures will be on you an be messaging and calling you time to time to followup on their work.

But once you completed and submitted the work to them, the ghost-mode has started, some will stop reading your messages, some will stop picking your calls, some will even goes as far as picking up up fight with you and the worst they'll start posting you for payment, like my bank network is bad, I want to sleep, when I wakeup I'll pay and many silly excuses in order not to pay.

Some people even relate with you very close that, you won't even know how to charge them for some works and you'll expect them to pay you well after deliver their works, but they'll still go ahead and pay peanuts.

Especially people you have being working with for a long time, takes this long time business relationship as Avenue to not pay for some little works. Let's assume you have designed a logo for some and he has paid and he later asked you to render the logo on a bus or brand a car for him, they'll expect you to do that for free, because they've paid you for the logo.

What do you think we can do as servicemen and servicewomen to curb this. This concern almost everyone I expect everyone to say something about this.

So you really have the time to work with people from developing countries? WoW! As a freelancer, I never work for such people. And you should be minding the type of job you are taking. Most Nigerians are middle men and so are indians, bangladeshi's, pakistani's and almost everyone from a developing country. AVOID THEM. They are mudafukers.

I think it goes both ways, if you pay a work man in full, it becomes difficult to get your work done, carpenter I have chair to fix for me has been posting me for over two months now because he has collected payment, now if I decided not to pay him, he would have done the job swiftly and be waiting for his money, I have seen this happen severally so I say I will stop paying workmen in full when ever I delegate work to them.

I can't forget one goat like that. He gave me is project to help him type, that he will be needing it the next week and that period was during exam period of secondary schools, so I had many work with me. I now have someone close to me the guys work with the mindset that when he pays me I will give the person the money. This was around ending of November last year. After all the rush to complete his work, can u believe this guy didn't show up the next week. I called his number tire, the guy was picking at first telling me that is boss at work is not around so he can't come for it now. Oya send my money when your boss comes u will come collect your project, this guy didn't pick my call again. He didn't even answer my WhatsApp message. Early February this same guy now called to ask if I still have is project, it was just like I should slap him from where I was. Just wasted my time and effort.

You, should be doing pay before service, or half payment first, and half after the work is completed. Anybody that refuses, drop him immediately. Doing things that way, would help you remove distrustful customers, and leeches.

That's why I always negotiate price of services upfront , and then do a "half now, half upon delivery". If you no pay me the rest of my money, i do not release what I did for you.

Charity begins at home......If you check very well you would notice that those who behave like that learnt it from their parents.

Re: Why Is It That Nigerians Don't Like Paying For Services. by stuntman007: 3:18pm On Mar 30, 2022
I think you should send out invoice for your services and it should state clearly the terms and conditions of your services. Always insist on 75% or 80% of of your charge as initial deposit and job delivered after full payment is made. For instance, if you charge 100k for a job and the client pays 50%(50k) as initial deposit, paying the outstanding 50k will be difficult cos at that point he or has a million thing he wants to do with 50k. But if client had payed 80k as deposit, Trust me he will be looking for you knowing a huge percent of that money is in your hand and you are yet to get his job delivered. I am a photographer and this has saved me most times.
