Help! I am about to finish my 300L stage in one of Nigeria state polytechnics but I am losing many opportunities due to my inability to speak fluently in English language. Although, I am good in typing/writing and I can compose my self in good English in my brain but it is very difficult whenever I open my mouth.
Any suggestion for improvement are welcome.
Thanks Nairalanders.

Who English help....

How many Chinese Engineers can speak fluent English....

Well if you intend to get proficient in English, then download Duolingo , Memrise or FluentU applications for Android and learn on your own at your leisure time

Ohh!! And which state Polytechnic uses "300 Level" as against HND1

You're partially right, but on some occasions maybe during an interview even though you are good at what you do best but spicing things up with fluent English is always a problem.
I appreciate your advice though and I'm going to try out those apps

start reading books and anytime you come across new words check your dictionary for the meaning and practice using the new words in sentences and also when reading sometimes read out loud so you can hear yourself speak you would get better it's all about time and confidence

Follow 'English General' on IG. Watch English Movies. Play with words in your mind, create sentence to speak with yourself. Have a chat with the mirror speaking English. Never take a break

All you need is a platform to express yourself, try joining groups, associations. Always make it habit to address ppl.

NB.
*Back in the house prepare a speech note while standing infront of your mirror try giving a speech with your prepared note.

*Gather your siblings and try addressing them.

*Get books on self motivation and public speaking..

Lastly don't always be in a hurry to speak, build your ideas in your head first before speaking ️

Continue to communicate more in English language ( spoken).
Listen to radio programs. Any student station. Unilag fm was my favorite those days with this guy then, Larmu. That guy was so eloquent. I so much loved him back then. My role model.

I remember when I did my siwes, one of my colleagues then decided to use that period to better her spoken English. She spoke English all through the 5 months. Bad English at first but it became better, we even made jest of her for trying to form grammarian but I'm sure she's reaping the benefits today.

If you cannot speak proper English especially as a graduate, you are just short changing yourself.

Imagine young people like yourself conversing in English but you're scared to participate because of your bad grammar.

Just keep speaking it, and listen to good English speakers with intent to learn and develop.

Shy away from opening your mouth and see it get worse.
