Help! I am about to finish my 300L stage in one of Nigeria state polytechnics but I am losing many opportunities due to my inability to speak fluently in English language. Although, I am good in typing/writing and I can compose my self in good English in my brain but it is very difficult whenever I open my mouth.
Any suggestion for improvement are welcome.
Thanks Nairalanders.
be confident, try to be speaking it regularly and master, present tense, past tense and present continuous tense well before you speak out at all...with time you'll master it very well...I've been in that situation before, but when customers call me now, they'll be wondering how an agbo seller have good command of English....just be confident enough and try to speak it regularly, and whenever you are speaking your own language either hausa,Fulani,Igbo, urhobo, esan or Yoruba mix it up with English...try this

Never give up. You can always start from the cradle (source) all the way up. Get the Queen's Primer part ii, there will be no need for My First Copy Book since you write adequately.

First of all, you have to dump pidgin. It will mess up your Engilsh.

Second and most important point, you have to transcribe videos that are in English language. Google what transcription means. You will download a clear English video from YouTube (documentary, lectures, etc), type out everything you are hearing in the video accurately. Type it out in MS word document and proof read it using the video. The more you do this, the more you start speaking like them.

This is actually how I improved my oral English. Most people when they hear me talk can't tell that I'm a Nigerian.

The problem is that you've lived among your own people for too long, conversing in your native language. And this has made it impossible for you to be transformed. It's not a matter of lexicon or grammar, it's just that you're not transformed, My co-inlaw who has BA English Education, and teaching at a Federal Poly , in fact their Senior English teacher, has that problem. The solution is that you have to move to a place ( town or city or district ) where English Language is predominantly used as a medium of communication. You would be dragged along, and in no time, you yourself will start to see the transformation.

Reading alone can't help your spoken English.

I had that problem before, I joined Toastmasters International; a platform that helps you conquer the fear of public speaking and teach you leadership skills.

My spoken English got better because I was always interacting with people who speak proper English and won't laugh at me.

As your confidence rise, your spoken English will improve.

How do I join the group?

Join groups where you will be required to speak frequently. It seems you are a little of an introvert, so you need to speak more. In case you find some people making fun of you among the group members, do not pay much attention to them, look forward to the bigger picture. You are only part of the group to build yourself against your weakness and don't let anyone take that from you

Read books to improve not for fun, also watch good Hollywood movies, while you do so, subtitle them.

Make your mirror your roommate, addressee and fan , speak to it, complain to it, scold it, lambast it, speak soft words to it

Contrary to your claim above, you re not good in writing (judging by your post above). Always be honest with yourself and you will be surprised at how fast you improve.

Cheers to a new learning spirit.

Read books always. Listen to radio and watch/hear TV news and commentaries (especially foreign news channels like the BBC, CNN, Aljazeera, etc.) Listen to/watch interviews. Pay special attention to the way the presenters and guests on the radio/TV programs carry on conversation. Scrutinize sentences and speeches heard and it will help you build up and develop your word skills and diction.

It happened to me when growing up. It's normal especially if u're not born with silver spoon. First, do a lot of reading, paying extra attention to vocabularies. Also, make a habit of soliloquizing... No, u're nt mad. It helps to build u & if done consistently, d result will be magical. U can be in a room all alone & start pronouncing words, making speeches all to urself. This way u can see for urself areas u need to work on. Also, make English words transcriptions a must for urself when using d dictionary. The result will wow u.

The only suggestion I can give you is what worked for me.

1. Get a discussion partner, preferably one of the opposite gender and a confidant. Practice daily with this person. When you can get to that point that you can speak with a chic smoothly, you have scaled through.

2. Start talking to yourself. Practice random speech presentation. I remember when I was going to attend my first interview, I practiced by talking to myself. I wanted to ensure that I could hear every word I spoke.

3. Any other thing you want to do, do. But those two up should help up. You write well so it's about speaking now. How well can one learn to speak if not to speak?

Someone said he is loosing opportunities, dementia is saying he shouldn't worry about his problem.

Like I said you are daft (DAFT) and you highlight the problem of many Nigerians who claim to speak English but do not understand (comprehend) English. It is an endemic problem in Nigeria. It makes you look daft!!!!!

First of all, my comment (to which you responded) was to someone who said the OP doesnt need English because Chinese Engineers do not speak English. I did not respond to the OP, I responded to someone who said he doesnt need English. If you had any brain cells, and any ability to comprehend what you read, you will actually realise that I was actually saying that as a NIgerian you need to be able to communicate effectively in English. You are an example of a failure to communicate effectively in English.

Because of your failure to comprehend in English you failed to understand what was being said, therefore making yourself look like an idiot!!!

Speaking in English is not the big problem of Nigerians, it is understanding comprehending English as this exchange highlights!! It is a big problem, if you go through my posts I have said it many times, Nigerians lack basic English comprehension. He fails (just like you) to understand what you say to him in plain English!!!

Where did I say the OP doesnt need English? What I said was he needs English because in Nigeria we speak English, A Chinese man may not need English or can get away with poor English because in China they communicate in Chinese. A Chinese man only needs English if he needs to communicate with an outsider. That is what a person who has English comprehension should have taken from my post.
